Wood Turning a Very Quick Ornament

+Willem Kossen Hi Willem. Thanks. If you have a faceplate, you could use a waste block. Screw the waste block to the face plate, turn it to round and find centre. Once you find centre, glue the blank to it with super glue or carpenter's glue. (if you use carpenter's glue, give it at least a day to cure, and for the super glue, I'd give it a couple of hours, or use the hardening spray.) If your blank is already round, you may even want to cut a small mortise into the waste block for the blank to press into for the glueing. Use your tail stock for support, but with just enough pressure to hold it tight against the waste block for your initial cuts. Once you've cut the bottom tip of the ornament, you can take the little pin out of your tail stock live centre and use it like I did in the video about making a finial with tail stock support. Make certain your tools are very sharp, and go gently... and wear a face shield! Super glue holds well, but not as well as a chuck. - That is how I would do it without a chuck. - Having said that, I'd rather have my chuck. I'm glad I made that extra little investment. Thanks for your elaborate answer. I will try this method. I need a chuck, but my lathe has a non standard fitting, so that is still a bit of a search.

+Jerry Paul I don't want to hijack your comment Jerry, but I have to mention hot glue, I always use it for waste block turning, and never in 4 years had a joint fail, and it is a very quick method. Cheers Mike
