Today I am turning a simple bowl made from Cherry wood.
It might be small but it is a beautiful piece of wood. Lots of color and some cool features.
Hope you enjoy it!

Cherry is a beautiful wood. I know I have said this before, but it looks so much like the wood of the Mexican Plum trees that grow wild here in Central Texas. My dad always thought they were more of a cherry than a plum . I think the delicate shape you put on this bowl is awesome.. Nothing wrong with some small bowls. Thanks for the sharing the video.

Thanks Travis. Apparently there is a tree called Cherry Plum in Californian. Not sure about the fruit but the wood sure is pretty. We have a plum tree and a cherry tree. The birds get the cherries before we can. Thanks for watching, Gary

Lovely Gary!! The colours are beautiful as cherry often is. I had the privilege of being given some orchard cherry wood from the Okanagan in BC lately. Most of the cherry I've turned has been from ornamental trees but this wood was very different. Besides being a more luxurious red colour, it also smelled like I was standing in a cherry pie with all the shavings around me!! As others have said, being a smaller bowl doesn't take away from its beauty. Cheers, Rick
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 20 дней назад
Thanks Rick. There seems to be lots of types of Cherry trees and the wood all looks different. As far as how it smells I miss out on that. In 2006 I lost all my sense of smell. Some has come back but not enough to feel like I am standing in a Cherry pie. On a side note would you have a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on that pie LOL Gary

Gord wowed me when he would stick to 3/8" bowl gouge for decent sized bowls. Occasionally I'll grab my 5/8" gouge, but usually it's two 1/2" with 35 and 55 degree grinds. Each to their own, for sure. Nice bowl, Gary. Perfect satin finish. I also like a smaller one for the ease, but they don't take much less time that a bigger one, so I have a nice stash of lovely medium-small blanks because the big ones just couldn't wait. :)
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 19 дней назад
My 1/2" bowl gouges say 3/8". Some measure the shank and others the flute I think there is a misunderstanding with all of this. Rather than confusing things I go with bar size on all of the ones I have. Even though my Sorby tools measure the flute.

I just acquired a bowl lathe, and as of last Monday, I now have electricity to my 20+year old pole barn. That is where my shop is finally going to come together all in one place. Gotta empty it out first, but hope to have it all up and running by the end of the year.

Thanks Valerie! A bowl lathe...hmm what is it and how big. At work we had a post lathe. I turned a ring that was just about 8 foot in diameter. You have me thinking now. I could rotate the head on my Bridgeport mill and turn it into a bowl lathe. Runs off a VFD so could slow it down to a crawl. But I wont LOL

Still saving up for a new Lathe and I'm just not feeling myself without making artwork. But I love to watch other woo turners to keep my focus on the task at hand and working to save for one. A very nice one if I don't say so myself, Gary. That piece of wood came from a cherry tree that was growing at Holly Lake Ranch a gated community that is located north of Hawkins in East Texas off US 80 situated about mid-way between Dallas, TX and Shreveport, LA.. That was one of four pieces of wood that remained after being chopped down and scavenged by many wood turners in the area. If you snooze, ya lose when wood like this becomes available in the area. I was fortunate to grab what I could get two or so years ago. I am happy the boss lady likes it and is putting it on a shelf. 👍👍👍👍👍

I loved the zoom effect you were using in this video, Gary. An editing feature of your software, I presume? Very effective! I think mine does that too but I haven't figured it out, yet. I also love the bedan tool you modified. Looks so much stronger than my thin diamond point tool. Might have to find one of those for myself. This Cherry has some beautiful grain and color to it. Along with the inclusion, your talent with your new gouge and that great finish, you have another winner! Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

Thanks Phil with a piece of Cherry like this it is hard to go wrong. Yes that feature is in my software. You can make it zoom in or out. Or even move the work left or right. It is a pretty cool effect. Crazy thing is I had an Amazon gift card and decided to get the bedan. Then a few years later I had a Rockler gift card and guess what I bought. I had not used the first one and forgot I had it. That is why I made it into a tenon tool. What I like is the tail stock can still be against the work. And of course the extra thickness helps. And my old Craftsman diamond point tool has gotten too short to fit on the grinder platform, Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Don! We have 2 cherry trees and I have gotten trimmings off big enough for turnings but most end up in my smoker. So Cherry wood is good for lots of things but I sure like turning it. Gary

That is a very nice bowl. I haven't done any turning as if kate, however, its August and I live in Alabama. So it's Bern its usual "warm" self. But I may start back soon.

Love cherry! My first bowl gouge was 1/2” and I used it for everything. They work fine for most turning but I’ve since switched to 5/8.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 18 дней назад
Cherry is a great wood to turn for sure. I use both 5/8 and 1/2 inch gouges. I find there is a place for both depending on the piece of wood. I got a comment yesterday saying that he only uses 1/2 inch for everything. Hard to say what a person is really using as across the pond they size the gouge by the flute. Here we go with the shaft size. I refer to all my tools by the bar size.

@DougMilleratWoodSpunRound 20 дней назад
Interesting question you had about the size of the bowl gouge. I do virtually all bowl turning, roughing and finishing, with 1/2” bowl gouges. I have a 5/8” and a 3/4” but seldom get them to the lathe. IMHO, size and grind really make little difference. What seems to make the most difference is the turner’s comfort level with the tool. You’ve turned a lovely bowl. Cherry is the queen after all.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 20 дней назад
Thanks Doug. When roughing a blank to a round shape I will take a 5/8 anytime. The extra steel helps when cutting wood like Black Locust especially when doing a natural edge. A nice fully round blank it does not make much difference like you said. I have an equal amount of both sizes and love using both. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very nice looking bowl Gary. The grain and the figure are really impressive. One question regarding the video, in some places it looks like you are zooming in and out while you are turning. Is that part of your camera setup or did you do that when editing the raw video? It was an interesting effect.
@ThePapa1947

Thank you very much Mark. If you see the zooming taking place it is part of the software. If I go from one scene to another and it is zoomed in then most likely I zoomed with the camera. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, it’s a beauty! I like all the inclusions. They add so much to a turning. Glad you stayed ahead of the cracks. It’s disappointing to have that happen… is the other half of the log useable?

A remote control would never work for me. I cant find the TV remote in my living room, how could I possibly find it in the shop? I have a heavy duty pull-cord switch mounted on the wall at one end of my shop and a string going all the way to the other end wall at a height of about 6 feet. No matter where I am in the shop, that string is always there just over my head!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 20 дней назад
Thanks Kevin that is a good idea for some things. Problem with using a long string is most of my on off switches are push button. I hang bright colors on most of my remotes. They do get lost(set down where I forget the spot) but I try and hang them where they are easy to see. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 Sure Garry, but you only need it for the dust extractor in which case you would wire it across the start button. It could restart without warning in the event of a power cut, but that wouldn't be very dangerous. Keep your videos coming. They are very interesting, thanks.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 18 дней назад
@@kevingeaney7741 yes I could take that switch out and wire a nice switch in its place. But I have 4 machines that use the dust collector and I would just as soon use a remote instead of a cobweb of strings running to each machine. The remote is working like new now. I even put a remote on my shop vac which is handy. When it picks up something that clogs the end I can just shut it off and clear it and back to work. This afternoon was sweep and vacuum day and that saved me a lot of work All of my LED overhead lights are daisy chained together. Each one has a pull cord to shut it off which is really handy. Thanks for your tips, Gary

This little bowl is really beautiful. I like cherry wood a lot. I don’t know anything about working with wood, I am a computer and electronics guy for more than fifty years, so please forgive me, if I might ask a stupid question about the shellac sealing. Is it save to put food, like apples, pears, peaches or other fruit and vegetables, in a shellac-treated bowl? Thank you for sharing your videos. 🌈
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 20 дней назад
Thank you very much Benedict! Not a stupid question at all. A good one in fact. Shellac is a finish I would consider food safe. For one reason they coat M&M's with shellac. Or they used to. Besides that I think it says it on the can that it is food safe. So putting fruit and vegetables it is perfect. I use the same finish for snack bowls like chips, nuts and popcorn. Thanks for watching, Gary
