Wood turning the faith hope and love pen kit can cause extreme frustration to turners and it all goes back to one simple thing. When flushing the blank to the tube you have to be exact, and there is also a quick tip on where to get really cheap silicone pen moulds.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.

Great video Shay and thanks you Leona for the mould. They are £2.99 here in the UK which is so cheap. I've never turned one of those kits and can't remember the name of another kit that requires the same regarding trimming the tubes but they are a right pain. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw

I read a lot of complaints on the pen pages about that kit Huw mate and I know the fix so I just put the video up to try and help people sort it out. Yeah a great find by Leona and they work great. Shay

We use that mold kit. The molds are 5” long. You cut your blocks at 2-1/8” before you drill. The brass sleeves are exactly 2”. These are the kits we use all the time. I’m only 8 min in Shay, but we do the spin style and you can always just press the spin part in a little extra and not have any problems with length.

I enjoy making the FHL pen. 1. I have found is with early pens is that the center band has "uneven bumps" on the sides. This keeps the blanks from seating correctly and leaves a visible gap at the sides of the CB. I take the CB apart (it is two pieces) and sand the sides of the CB to make the sides flat. Then reassemble the CB. 2. The NIB brass tube is not always long enough and/or too short to correctly extend and retract the ink fill. Find out the target length for the NIB tube. Attach the transmission to the CB. Turn until the TR is in the retracted position and insert ink fill. Drop the NIB over the ink fill. Place the NIB brass tube (MARK THAT TUBE!) between the CB and NIB. You can also do this with a caliper. Eyeball to verify if the ink fill is fully retracted inside the NIB. Repeat with the ink fill in the extended position. This will give you a target length to shoot for. FINALLY now the pen will go together properly with no issues. Hope this helps!!!😊

As I said in the video Randy I have turned a lot of these kits and the main problem people seem to have is overtrimming the tubes, I am unsure why you are having a problem with the centre bands, I have never found one with "uneven bumps" as you describe. It could possibly be a manufacturing flaw from wherever you are getting them from. What I said in the video about the brass tubes is that they are the exact length with no room for error, if you even slightly overtrim they don't work properly. Great video Shay. How’d you prep the blank? Was the wood stabilised or just pressure cast with the resin?

Cheers Paul, no I didn't stabilise the wood, I just put the pieces in the mold Leona found , made sure they didn't float, poured the resin and stuck it in the pressure pot. Shay

Yeah I agree, the lighting over at the vice is not great as I said, I have the lighting set up for the lathe which is where I film normally. It was more about the point I was trying to make as in you have to be very careful when using the pen mill with this kit. Shay

Pen looks great Shay, and good advise on how to trim the barrels, we get into the habit of trimming until we see the shine on the brass!

Hi Shay, keeping well I hope. I love the range. Constantly in it just raking about. They have a decent craft area with brushes, paints, dyes etc & everything is, just like you say about the moulds, dirt cheap & very decent quality. They're big stores & jeez, they even sell furniture. I'm lucky, I've got one that's only 3 mile from me. Really nice looking pen. Great job from you as per 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. BTW, you know I'm a Scot but can I join your Irish wood turner's group ? 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It's a great shop Jim, the only thing I dislike about ot is when I go in with my good lady wife. It takes hours and hours and hours as she wants to look at everything in the place 😭😭. Of course you join Jim, it is just mostly Ireland based for where to go for stuff etc but everyone is welcome. Shay.
