Learning how to carve can be intimidating if you look solely at the end result. Much like other woodworking techniques you need to break it down into smaller steps to get it right.
In part 2 of this series, I take a look at the individual tools used to carve the scallop shell and the various cuts made with each type of tool. The best part is, the different ways to get the tools to cut works no matter what kind of carving you're doing.

Been carving with knives only since I started. Just got my first set of chisels/gouges. This is exactly what I needed! Thank you.

Thank you for this video. I've worked with wood since the early 80's, and really enjoyed the scroll saw. But I didn't wear a mask and now have beem diagnosed with pulmanary fibrosis. So my scroll saw days are behind me. I am planning on wood cavring. So far, I've got my workstation and sharpeneing station set up. I ordered some chisels (medium quality since I'm a beginning) last week and they should be here today. I know I've got a lot to learning, but wood carving will allow be to keep my creative side alive without the sawdust. Needless to say, I am excited about this new venture and hope I can pull it off. Thanks again for this video, I need to learn all I can.

So in short, at least from my perspective, I need more chisels than the 3 pack from home Depot to do any real carving. I am able to get what I'm looking for, but to say the least, it's much more of a struggle than what you produced just now.

Lloyd Pittonet, More tools give you more options. The techniques are the most important part because they can be applied to virtually any type of carving chisel. Using a 3-pack of tools of any sort may make carving the exact shapes you want more difficult (or nearly impossible), but I've carved wood with nearly everything I could think of that would take an edge. If you get stuck on something, feel free to shoot me an email. I'm happy to help you, or anyone else, with any sort of woodworking/woodcarving/wood turning question if I can.

@@acanthuscarver thanks for the hand. I very well may take you up on this offer eventually. I've only just gotten into woodworking (specifically guitar building), and don't really have anyone showing me what to do. Granted, I've been what some would call successful (built 3 so far, sold the third commissioned to specific design) but I want to have a level of consistency in my work. I would say I've taken it as far as I can without actual instruction, though media such as yours has been invaluable in my endeavors.

How did you attach the piece to the table to keep it from moving?

Did you say tape?
@acanthuscarver
@acanthuscarver 4 года назад
The shell blank is taped, using double-faced tape, to the backer board. The backer is then clamped to the bench using hold fasts, but you can certainly use any kind of clamp that works for you.
