Hi Oliver...thanks for taking the time to record this. I really admire those of you that have the skills and patience to video their automata builds. So much can be learned from these videos. I also enjoyed seeing the PU molds and how you use them. And the long teeth on the pinwheel gear are genius. Your shop seems multi-disciplined and well equipped.

hey !, loved your video...but i was curious , what software do you use to model the movements (the cams / levers), im trying to make one for my college project , thanks (anyone can answer if they have any idea .), thanks !

Oliver, Yes, I am an aspiring automaton maker, and I love this kind of video. However, despite calling this "design and build", I feel like you left out a lot of the important design process. You seemed to have all the mechanicals already planned out and just needing final adjustments (like the cams). I would like to see more if the initial process of design, like deciding how many moving parts, how they would be activated, how to choose the timing, knowing how many gear teeth to use here and there, etc. Thanks.

Again, thank you for the feedback. I understand I could of put a bit more content in relating to the design process. In my defence I had limited time in which to build the automaton. I do have some more videos planned very soon and I hope to go into a lot more detail, including more of the early design stage. Thank you and all the best in your automaton making endeavour!

It would be nice if you could show how you get the movement design, that is, how you get it on the computer, with what program you get these movements.

Hi, I really enjoyed watching your series of videos about making your automata. I thinking I may have to use these videos to show some of the students I teach how to make more complex automata - we make very simple automata! I was intrigued mould you made for your resin character, is this something you have designed and manufactured yourself? It made me think of all of the clocks etc... that students turn round and say I want a footballer, dancer etc.. and wondered if I could make something similar to make a generic character they could use in school.

Hi John, Yes, The whole process has been done by myself. The original figurine was carved from wood and then the individual body parts where moulded using silicone and then cast with a two part polyurethane mix. The figurine could certainly be manipulated to create any character. I will be very soon making some new videos where I show more detail of my processes which may be of interest. Thanks Oliver

@@mechanicalOlly1977 it happens... thats how we learn. Your automata projects compensate for it fully! Do you make a living of automata only, or is it just one of your specialisms?
@mechanicalOlly1977
@mechanicalOlly1977 Год назад
@@jobbe-wijnen Yes, automata is what I specialise in and my only source of income. My strengths lie in making automata, but it’s something completely different trying to promote myself and sell automata. That’s the difficult bit!
@jobbe-wijnen
@jobbe-wijnen Год назад
@@mechanicalOlly1977 that's true for most art, but I believe your automatas are of high quality which will always be key in selling. My pull tap project (see logo) drew only four paying patreons (lol) you're doing way better in any case!

No I haven’t, but if metal is your preferred medium, I would highly recommend checking out www.fihenshallautomata.co.uk/ Fi Enshall uses mainly scrap metal in her automata and to an incredible effect.
