It's satisfying to watch the brush smooth out the roller and then watch the brush streaks slowly fade away. I guess you could say I enjoy watching paint dry.

Nice...nice...nice! You described the process perfectly. I have modified this process over the years. I have found most of the specialty boat paints flash off too quick even with brushing thinner. I have gone back to traditional oil based paints and I do my painting in 50 degree weather. In fact, I don't even tip off with a brush anymore. The cool temperature allows the roller bubbles and stipple to pop and flatten out just by gravity. You can even get away with cheap rustoleum, but there are no UV inhibitors. However, I beat up my boats so much they get another coat every other year anyway so no big deal to me. Just my two cents. Excellent, excellent job! I love the swoop profile of your paint job. Gonna look awesome on the river!

Good work! Patience is your friend when rolling and tipping (sort of), there is a fine line between too fast and too slow. It is also a totally different experience when you use a high quality poly paint, makes the job look much better than other “high quality” paints.

Buy a titan 440i airless. Would solve 99% of your issues. The fiberglass runs, the brush marks, etc as you can spray everything like epoxy,, oils, lacquers, and latex for showroom finish. I have two in our cabinet shop we use on production cabinets. One oil based loaded one water based loaded so it's easier to clean them not cross species mixing - but you only need one.

Looks like you could have done this with one tape up session. Then use the blue and switch to the red and it would have come out equally good.The large red section was a waste of red paint. I've painted boats and cars before using automotive PPG paints and did lots and lots of pin strips and graphics with different colors. If you plan out your color scheme, you won't waste paints. Thumbs Up either way.

I've seen other people mask off the large areas first, getting close to where the edge of the paint will be, and then putting the fine line automotive tape along the paint line and over the edge of the main masking. That way, they can quickly pull the fine line tape off first before the paint dries and then pull off the rest of the masking at their leisure..

Wow, a great many differences between construction of a drift boat and a sailboat because of different load stresses. Should you ever need to plane long level surfaces like your chine log again attach a little 4" line level to an old wooden bodied plane. I've built many sailboats and have a transitional 18" plane with one epoxied in place, works wonderfully.

at around 10:20, you can see all sorts of red on the bare wood (where you haven't painted). But then when you're pulling the tape off the blue, it's all gone. Did it just clean up really easily or was there some "magic of television" happening here? It's killing me that you've already been out on it and we have to wait for the series to be done. :) (I guess that's what you're referring to when you discussed cleaning between coats with acetone)

Why waste all that red paint just to put 3 coast of blue over it looks good job at the end
@commando552
@commando552 4 года назад
I imagine the problem would be that the paint has enough body that if you were to do a strip of red and then overlap that slightly with the blue you would see a ridge in the blue paint where it had the extra thickness of the red coats under it. The only way that you could do it without worrying about forming a ridge would be to feather the pain out on the overlapping edge, but I don't think that would be possible with this paint and situation as it has to be feathered back towards the wet edge to get a good finish.
