Having a 4$ shower that is such a boat/marina term! LOL Butyl tape is definitely a go to product. ok, this is all the time I have to binge watch for today, bye.
It's one of life's loveliest feelings when you put your boat back in the water [where she belongs] and you've worked over every inch of your hull and made it ship-shape. Hard work but extremely satisfying. Good on you Peter!
I just found you videos. What a classy boat and a very lucky day for her when she found you. Over the next few days I'll be catching up to where you are now. She is a real beauty.
Hi Peter say how soon will the Salt Spring Island Folk Festival be it's always a blast great place not to break a leg 😆 look out for those logs they bite 😆 Anyway Peter have a great weekend my friend and Cheers 🍻
That really is a beautiful boat! So glad you are keeping her going. I’m no sailor but when I see boats of any type neglected and left to rot it is depressing. It’s hard to see these floating works of art in decline. Even tho they seem like more work, wooden boats just imo, have a soul and deserve so much respect and love! Great job, loving the series!
Wow, she sure is a beauty! The thing with old wooden boats is that they are built in a way that makes them last forever with a slight maintenance. But if they are left without maintenance they will go really bad. We had to replaced the whole bottom part on our mahogany boat from -68, and the next big thing is to restore the outer part of the cabin. It is hard work but really rewarding especially when it shines like a piano and goes 48knots :D
Really enjoying your restoration videos. I like your honest, no nonsense approach, without all the madness and drama that often accompanies such blogs. The only issue I have is in following a chronological sequence, which has been further confused by the fact that there seems to be two different boats in the videos? Or am I having a major senior moment? Anyway, most enlightening and informative and very entertaining. Well done and thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. If you use the playlist the videos will appear in the correct order. It seems RU-vid promotes them rather haphazardly. Yes there are two boats, you're not imagining it!
Looking forward to the next haul out in a few weeks. Thought I’d go back and have a look at the first one and see what your previous impressions were of the hull. My how ( so many) things have changed since this video was filmed!
Always hated putting my new painted ,super looking, boat back into the ucky water........after that many days of work, I want to see what I did.......and it all goes below the water line. Great job on fixing it right !!!!!
If you've ever tried to paint over silicone you know it won't stick at all not ever 😣 so glad you've taken care of the garage seam in the effect that the wood is oil soaked use Dawn for Dishes and scrub it well then rinse well with water then dry it well you will have a clean seam ready for good adhesive!!!
She looks amazing!! Glad to hear the repairs went well. I'm going to use the live well idea on mu boats, going to build a waterproof box to contain the electrics for the aft lighting (no room for beers on an RC haha).
Just had my old boat out also and I also had a 6 foot section of leak along the Graboard seam on the starboard side, a shipwright put new cotton in for me and after many attempts to recaulk using the putty and then paint..no dice, continued leak from the boat's bilge, behind the engine, the lowest part of the boat, simply wouldn't give anything time to dry and water was seeping through the putty and paint..........someone told me not to worry the water pressure will hold it all in place but was not great consolation... couldn't trust anything I put in there would stay and the putty wouldn't simply fall out as we travelld back to the mooring, and this was a huge risk for putting it back onto it's mooring, before the fix there was s urprsiing amount of water coming in and underway even more.... after six days still couldn't resolve the issue, any rain we had ended up with a little bit of water getting through some spots on the deck that need repair, this perpetuated the issue and the costs of being on the hard were mounting..in the end I purchased a strip of heavy-duty copper sheet, was given lead-based pink sealant from the shipwright ro put on the back of the copper...copper nails and some additional sika-flex underwater sealant..on the hull, copper nailed the top then moulded the strip to the hull and keel with a rubber mallet and naeiled down each side 2 inches apart...was a messy job but cleane dup okay for painting, it's not intended to be a permanent fix however will probably last for ever and a day anyway. Next jobs are to seal up the decks and top-sides that I will do on the mooring, thanks for filming what you did...nice to see other old boats getting a make-over
Pay the seams with Wet Patch. The stuff you use to seal a leaky roof with. Inexpensive and better than Sika Flex in my experience. Used it on my wooden boat years ago. Did not come loose once. The down side was it only came in a black which below the water line didn't matter.
to make a quick caulking iron... take a battery powered angle grinder to a junk yard.. slice off a few layers of leaf Springs that are nicely tapered.. weld a cold chisel to a groove you cut with your angle grinder in the leaf spring sections.. be sure to get different thickness of leaf spring sections to make different thickness caulking irons.. 35 years ago.. i used to make these up.. sit on the tail gate of my pickup truck with Caulking irons for sale sign at the marina entrance and sold every one i could make up in a few hours. no excuse to NOT have a caulking iron anymore..
@@Moondoggy1941 i don't have access to a shop with welding equipment right now.. the worst part.. at the shop i did have access to in 2019.. i tossed out 3 pairs of leaf springs. make it up out of grade 8 flat washers..
what is the hull speed? I like the fact that has only one motor - maybe because I feel like one motor will use less gas, or less maintenance ....:-)...also 38' is long enough to...love it
Theoretically about 7 knots. But I like to run her at about 6 which I find is her sweet spot. She's considered a semi displacement. That flat stern just slips off the water leaving almost no wake at just under hull speed. Less fuel, less maintenance, less noise. Perfect!
wandering what camera are you using for filming and about editing program. Have been watching different u-tube videos and started thinking of making some for my projects......just curious. Just finished watching a bunch videos from Leo - a sailor rebuilding a 100 years old British sailboat at Sequim.....what a undertaking! Found him on Wooden Boat Forum
I use a couple of different cameras. A Lumix DSLR, GoPro and sadly all too often my IPhone. Which I won't anymore but unfortunately lots of upcoming footage is still suffering from the IPhone extreme closeup nightmare. I edit in Cyberlink Director. I've been editing video for 30 years and although it's not considered a professional tool, it's very good for the money. I've been following Leo too, amazing project.
Please remember that wood boats have to swell for a couple of days in the water before they leave I had a 42 foot Chris Craft I had the thing completely refashioned and the bottom paint done and everything and it still leak for a couple of days and then it just stopped in the bilge if you stay dry I loved it Woods the only way to go keep the faith and you'll enjoy years of being hugged by living beings. :-)
Kai ora Geordie, can you tell me where in the world you are. That is a beautiful bridgedeck you have there. I owned one for many years here in New Zealand and it too was powered by a Perkins 4/47 a very reliable motor. Enjoy your work for you will for sure enjoy your travels.
Great work Peter - I have a similar job coming up with my boat soon - I didn't see you replace any anodes in this vid, but sure you must have. Just wondering how many /what size were required for your lovely monk - and where are they mounted?
Thanks Peter, Damn good question and the subject of an upcoming episode. The rather hot topic of bonding and anodes is so controversial these days. I fall on the less is better side of the debate. No bonding at all and only protect ferrous metals underwater. I compromise with a prop shaft zinc. All my other stern gear is bronze.
I can sympathize with you.My neighbour gave me a smaller boat and I am in the midst of replacing the transom, stringers, and floor. The sanding is no joy!!!
Hi Leif, No it's all there, one side the frame is painted and the other stained. but the glass is intact. full rebuild is on this summer's list though so stay tuned.
That's the keel cooler, not for cooling the keel, but engine coolant. The engine pumps it's antifreeze through those pipes to cool itself rather than pump seawater through a heat exchanger.
Dont know if you want to or how expensive it is but you should fetvthis pant for tge bottom that you wont have to pant agian and it will keep thevwood in great condition im not sure ehat its called but you probably know what im talking abouy
Heh, some say so, I will appease the boat gods with the appropriate ritual. Boat names mean an awful lot to me and her old name had no connection for me.
I purchased brand new caulking irons From someone online if I could find them I’d mail them to you they were not expensive sorry all my archives and records went to the new owners they had it up on the hard for years doing pretty crappy work so I can’t bear to watch oh brainfart alert I bought them and caulking in a store in the heart of Annapolis that’s been selling marine supplies for years very old shop any one in Annapolis will know them they have a NOAA chart printer and will print full charts any where in the world I actually Bought a full set for Bahamas trip I rana few years ago because I docked about 10 miles south from it on the Bay for years more than anything about that shop is it is full of old Salty Dogs that can answer almost any thing about parts and systems I had the pleasure of getting rained inside oneFriday nite shooting the shitwith thestaff and my girlfriend the store is right in the middle of all the bars and the waterfronts famous Ego Alley wherethe Marriott and the City Marina is great Oyster Shooters BTW that’s the entrance to the Annapolis boat show too I’ll keep my eyes open for the irons due to illness I lost my home, boat, mind , and lots of other shit
