You will need the following items:
1. 5 x 8' 2x4 lumbar
2. Box of #9 3-inch wood screws (but any 3inch screws should work)
3. Power drill
4. One or more of the following: Jig saw, Table Saw, Circular saw, Pull saw
5. Potentially a wood chisel and wood file
Please note I'm making this custom to me and my height and dimensions so yours might be different.
Steps:
1. Cut 2 8' 2x4s at 58inches (keep the off-cuts) with your saw of choice
2. Cut 2 more 8' 2x4 at 64inches (keep the off-cuts) with your saw of choice
3. Glue (if needed) and screw the 58" lumbar to the 64” lumbar and fasten with six screws. Make sure the two pieces of lumbar are aligned at the base and fastened with the 4” faces touching. Do this for both sets of lumbar
4. Once the 58” piece is glued and fastened to the 64”, glue and screw the 38” off-cuts from the 58” piece to the 58” piece. Make sure the two pieces of lumbar are aligned at the base and fastened with the 4” faces touching.
5. To make the bases, cut eight (8) pieces of lumbar out of the remaining lumbar and the off cut from the 64” piece. These 8 pieces should be between 15” long and 24” long.
6. Cut the ends of the pieces made in step 5 at 45 degrees but keep the off-cuts.
7. Use the saw to cut half-lap cross joints into the prices made in step 5 such that they could fit flush with the post made in step 4 in the center. This may take some time.
8. Assemble the half-laps at the base of the post and glue and screw the base to the post.
9. Finally, take the off cuts from step 6 and place them on top of the 58” and 38” lumbar as shown in the video
