Today on Borderline Explorer I'm taking inspiration from traditional traction boards to create wooden ones. Save some money and DIY.
Pros: Cheaper, Durable, Strong!
Cons: Heavier, Not really stackable?

For your 2.0 version you should think of using a bed liner spray for additional traction
@BorderlineExplorer
@BorderlineExplorer 3 года назад
For real. It likes to slide out from under. Was a fun little experiment but traction boards have really come down in price. You can get whacktracks (any off brand maxtraxx) on Amazon for 50-60 a pair. Ridiculous.

Maybe a couple layers of paint and sand like they do on boat decks?

It'll save you hundreds! Just be careful about tire spin on the bolts and you're good to go.
@AB-bs5ef
@AB-bs5ef 3 года назад
I made mine at 48 inches and cut the ends at an angle (to create a miniature ramp) and put smaller bolt/nuts on the "ramp" and this addition seems to help get the tires climbing onto the board.

It will save you $ on boards but not on new tires.

Going to do this with plastic bolts and nuts! That way no harm to the tires and I can replace them when I want

Maybe try and apply some spray bed liner material for some durability, waterproofing, traction, and easy cleaning. Great stuff, I had the same idea and wanted to see if anyone else did it!

I like the idea, I’ll be curious to see how they work for you. I personally don’t know if I’d use these as I’d worry about the unforgiving metal bolts chewing up my tires. Maxtrax and similar will get destroyed if you burn out on them, but they fail before your tires do- in almost every situation I’ve used them I’m in such a low traction situation that it’s difficult not to spin. Anyway, fun DIY! My experience with them has only been in snow though, yours could still be useful in other situations too.
@BorderlineExplorer
@BorderlineExplorer 4 года назад
Thanks, we are really looking into a 2.0 version. Bolts will definitely chew the tires if spinning on the tracks. So far the disadvantage is the boards sliding out from under the vehicle & biggest advantage is being able to use the boards as bridges if necessary.

ActionTrax literally drills out their nubs and replaces them with 1/4" Bolts and Lock nuts for their Heavy Duty Boards. Maybe try nylon lock nuts as they have a more rounded head. May give you a bit more peace of mind, regarding your concerns.
@buttholesurf3r
@buttholesurf3r 3 года назад
You could cover them with a grip coating or Bed liner

Perhaps a plastic bolt or something similar that won’t damage your tyres

no issues with shredding tires after 4 uses- I used nylon lock nuts instead of regular nuts cuz they are les aggressive. Also, I lower my side mirrors so I can watch for spinning of tires and this helps some. I drilled large hole on one end of each board for tying a rope, then anchored the other end of rope off to snow pickets or snow flukes (also called a "deadman", for softer snow) placed in the snow or a rock/log/small child on the ground set just a few yards in front of and off to the side of the rear tires to prevent the boards from being thrown behind the tires as tires are trying to climb onto/off of boards. Do not stand near the pickets/anchors, in case they fail!

Pretty cool. I'm sure that's way stronger than those plastic Amazon boards. I'd be watchful for tread damage but it may not be an issue. If so, I think "crown cap nuts" would be the ticket. Nice job
@BorderlineExplorer
@BorderlineExplorer 3 года назад
Thanks! But please don't go making these!! We tested and had fun making these but they need much more improvement. Tread does get shred by the bolts. Way stronger than amazon boards but amazon boards have more grip to the ground instead of sliding out from under.
@Leonitrous
@Leonitrous 3 года назад
@@BorderlineExplorer So no go on these? Do you have a v2?
@BorderlineExplorer
@BorderlineExplorer 3 года назад
@@Leonitrous they're great to mess around with and to bridge in emergency situations, but there are three major flaws. Boards tend to slide out from under, bolts are hard on the spinning tires when you're stuck, and they're heavy. Haven't had much time to play around with a second version, but these days plastic traction boards are way cheap on the web. Hardly makes sense to keep trying when materials cost more than a full working product shipped with Prime.

I know this is like a year later, but obviously people are still checking this out. Another guy used plywood instead of 2x6's and it worked a lot better, I think because it had better flex and so stuck a little longer. Probley would still shred tires though. Maybe nylon heads. Love your emblem BTW, lol.
@hubster4477
@hubster4477 2 года назад
Maybe a longer bolt that sticks into the ground ( to keep the board anchored) so the tire wont shoot the board out the back. Common occurrence for me.
@jaytheist
@jaytheist 3 года назад
How much did you spend on materials? Vs how much would maxtrax knock-offs been?
@BorderlineExplorer
@BorderlineExplorer 3 года назад
These were definitely a fun project. Many drawbacks in this v1. Just around same price as knockoffs in the $60-70 range. Main advantage is strength. You can pretty much build a ramp through obstacles. Weakness is weight and bolts will destroy tread if driver keeps spinning on the boards.

@@justeyFLY1 These are V1. We tested them for a few months now. Some ideas for a better design would be some channels to keep the trax from sliding out, longer bolts, and a mountable/stackable design.

I don't know, looks like the truck got stuck again at the end of the video because the underside of the board has no real gripping power on the snow base.

@LightsOut-xw9cu
@LightsOut-xw9cu 3 года назад
Maybe a board slightly longer than 3'? Most WhackTrax and MaxxTraxx are a tad longer, but you may need even more with the weight of the board itself compared to the nylon?
@AB-bs5ef
@AB-bs5ef 3 года назад
possibly, but it has been a common occurrence with any traction boards I have used on snow- the power of the vehicle will exceed the traction ability of the device on snow/ice/soft surfaces. Slowing down speed helps, but then you lose momentum to get out of the rut once the vehicle runs off the board. I made your boards and love 'em (mine are 48 in long)! Have used them 4 times already this winter. Once put tree bark under the boards to help them stick to the snow. Another time, we just used the boards to drive up on so we could get the snow chains on without having to deal with the snow/digging.

Steel bolts look like a great way to shred the heck out of your tires. No thanks. $300 recovery boards are way cheaper than new BFGs. If you’re THIS poor, overlanding may not be the hobby for you.
