Here's my pirate meme (only transformers fans will understand it) : Charles Vane (in Megatron's role) : Now it's merely a matter of time until Woodes Rogers admits defeat.😈 Calico Jack (in Starscream's role) : The British would have lost eons ago if I'd been calling the shots!😠 Vane : Rackham, only a select few ever lead.😠 Calico Jack : My time will come, Vane.😠 (epic foreshadowing) Vane : Never!😠 NEVEEER!!!!!!😡😡😡
Woodes Rogers who knew Alexander Selkirk, who knew William Dampier, who knew Bartholomew Sharp, who knew Henry Morgan gotta be a better cinematic universe than Marvel could ever achieve.
Alexander Selkirk wasn’t marooned because he was fed up with his crew. He asked to stay because the boat was damaged by worm infestation and he knew it would sink . His other crew members went on without him and were shipwrecked weeks later . The Spanish found them and killed over thirty . Selkirk got picked up 5 years later by a British ship and continued to sail . He died many years later on board a vessel due to yellow fever and was given an at sea burial . His decision to stay on Juan Fernandes island was perhaps one of the greatest decisions ever made .
A video on a major, yet underrated British historical figure on tea day; coincidence? I think not! Edit: It's weird to think that the man who passed down knowledge from the buccaneers, some of the earliest Caribbean pirates, to the man who would herald the end of their reign was the coconut god himself.
First time I ever read of Rogers, was in "Republic Of Pirates" by Colin Woodard where I read his exploits very reluctantly (he wasn't a pirate:cringe). But since then I grew older and wiser and genuinly wanted to know his story, so thank you for presenting his biography. goatskins
if someone should make a movie about this guy I'd absolutely pay to watch that!! I've known about him for years, but I never heard such a detailed account of him before. Great video!! keep up thegood work
Great Video, could have included more details but very solid 30 minute long video. There is so many interesting things about him that the video fills up easily.
Well well well, the man who gave everything to a government was left with nothing but a glorified thank you card and a broken city to rule over. I’m not saying I’m disrespecting Rodgers, but his story is a perfect example of fighting for a society that promises peace and prosperity, but drains its people of rights and freedoms. “I choose dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery” -Thomas Jefferson 🏴☠️
pirates robbed innocent fishermen, enslaved free blacks and mulattoes, raped and tortured, Nassau was a stinking shithole before Rogers arrived, anything else?
Rogers is no better than the pirates and too is a scumbag. Or even a greater one. He was a privateer that rob people blind just as the pirates and he is a major slaver too. And him doing what he did to the pirates could be seen as ratting on people of his own trade.
@@bosunbill9059 I agree with this. Pirates were criminals but but at least the ones of vertices didn’t turn on their fellow man by siding with the vary thing they were against
@@GoldandGunpowder Sorry, not actual Dragon Ball music. Certain stretches of the composition reminded me the old background music from that show. Love the channel! There are too few good Age of Sail history channels on youtube!
@@GoldandGunpowder You are from a Nordic country i assume right? Haha I didnt mean for you to change your accent i just meant because you pronounce some words more softly than a lot of native English speaker would if you crank the volume a little that would be fine. Great content been binge watching keep up the good work.
Lesson learned? You can’t do shit by yourself. The Pirate OGs should have allied up instead of split ways where each was picked off. Could have extended the pirate way a little more. Probably for the best tho, pirates were assholes.
Pirates frequently attacked innocent fishermen, enslaved free blacks and played a role in the Atlantic slave trade. can you tell me how pirates are good guy?
@@GoldandGunpowder just because people like shows don’t make them immature, not like it offends Rogers or something. What’s done is history shows tend to romanticize piracy and black sails did a great job of entertaining and telling a convincing story. Chill
@@redclanwool1590he didn't say liking shows makes people immature, he said basing your option of a real person on a TV show did. You aren't responding to his point but some other point you made up.
