I started building a shade garden, mostly because I love gardening. But now I´m filling the area with good cutting plants like Salomons seal, Astilbe and Hellebores. You can easily shade out an area with for example Ninebark, Smokebush and Hydrangeas in layers and then the shade perennials behind 🙂

I love that! I've heard that there is a such thing as too much sun so I think creating some shade in your garden makes total sense!

My Veronica blooms from the 2nd week of June till the middle of July. I also get a smaller 2nd flush in the fall. I am in zone 8b in Tacoma Washington. I purchased mine from Farmer Bailey. They are in their 4th year and are doing fantastic. I am getting 30-40 stems per plant in the first flush. I have it interplanted with yarrow (also in it's 4th year) and my David Austin Roses.

So good to know! I'm still looking forward to see how my veronica does despite them being short. that is insane that you are getting so many stems. I had been eyeing farmer bailey's plugs and may buy more if they prove to be truly deer resistant. The yarrow is definitely deer resistant and I think I will plant more outside the protected area!

I’ve gotten so many great shrubs for my landscape (and some cuts) in the clearance area of my favorite nursery. A gallon lilac for $8, gallon panicle hydrangeas for $5, boxwoods for $5, etc etc. I love it.

I’m a clearance junkie! I’m about to do our landscape beds at the farm which gives me the perfect reason to hit Lowe’s clearance! I just got another lilac wooooo!

One perennial that’s a must for fall foliage is ninebark.

Yesss! Completely agree!! Added 60 this spring so in a few years we should have so many!

Yes!! I have one that came with the house and it’s incredible how much I cut off of it for florist sales!

American Cranberry is Viburnum trilobum. I have it in my landscape (Redwing cultivar). It’s been a vigorous grower so far! This is my first year with flowers and, I hope, berries!

@@jordonsflowerfarm I’m not sure how well the berries hold for cuts. I am growing it for landscape interest and to feed the birds, but look into it for cuts too!

Winter sowing perennials outdoors in milk jugs is so easy! If it can be grown from seed, it's hard to imagine passing up this method for buying plugs if time allows.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Makes sense! I'm going to try to be more proactive about sowing seeds for perennials I don't want to buy mass quantities of. Although it's relatively easy, winter is my busiest season due to my winter tulips and that's why I rely so heavily on plugs and not seed starting :)

Have you ever tried ladies mantle. It’s a great little spring filler flower. Low maintenance perennial. I have used it now for 2 years and super happy with it. I started mine from geo seed. Super easy to start.

I've also gotten so many from clearance sales! Things I'm currently trialing are a purple and a chartreuse smoke bush and I bought a primrose yellow lilac that I'm super excited for. False spirea puts on the most beautiful foliage in time to pair with tulips and I would like to learn more about the timing and mechanics of forcing pussy willows and fruit tree branches to go with tulips. I experimented this year with forcing apple blossoms and it went well. On the other side of the season I love Erin from Florets experiments with crab apples and I just bought an heirloom rose called Ballerina specifically for the hips. (although I adore single flowering roses so much too). A surprise that came back in force for me this year was hops vine. It's currently taking over my fence. It can be used green or dried and the dried flowers are probably a florist dream. Had to work this morning but this is one of those that would have been fun to read all of the inputs in chat. Thanks as always. ❤

Some natives to consider are New Jersey Tea and Heath Aster (although I think Heath Aster can get kind of invasive). I started both from seed. Aster did great first year and paired beautifully with Dahlias. NJTea still tiny
