In our first episode of "Backcountry College", we'll take a look at one of the most versatile pieces of equipment out there -- the plain old tarp. Here, we'll learn how to set up a tarp into a fully enclosed tent, then take a quick look at a few other shelter configurations.

This is a very good presentation... the most easily to understand instruction of this tarp shelter I have yet seen. Clear... covering the necessary information... right to the point and easy to understand. Great! Well done! Wow... so rare.

Barry, I'll sometimes rig my tarp like that as well. That's the great thing about them, there's no limit to how they can be used. Heck, you could even use one to make a raft if needed.

That is a very clever way of pitching a tarp. Nicely done.

Thanks for the great video. Could you show in a video the other configurations, ie the diamond setup and the hammock? I think the hammock setup would be great if you were worried about insects, snakes, or were in a wet environment!

I've used tarps for decades. Usually I'll tie them to trees, bushes or rocks. I don't carry stakes. For backpacking, the silnylon tarps are extremely lightweight yet fairly durable. Draping one side over a big boulder can work good too.

thanks for sharing, it was very informative. I've been torn as to what type of a shelter I want in my get home bag. This would be inexpensive and not weigh a lot. Thanks again!

Personally, I like have my 10'x12' silicone tarp stretched to it's fullest extent suspended 3-5' above my bivy sack. Living in Alaska I like to be able to see 360 degrees from my sleeping bag, plus the tie downs provide an "early warning" system if large critters trip on them. Also if I am camped away from a water source, the tarp gathers water in a storm.

A canvas painters tarp is an inexpensive alternative. Soak it with water so the fibers compress. Let it dry and then waterproof it.

Can this be done with a rectangular Tarp such as a DD Tarp.

Why not ? For. $ 10.87 Hyper Tough 8 ft. X 10 ft. of Waldmart might worc. Gentleman here is employing a 10 ft. X. 9 ft. ? What dimension rectangle is DD tarp ? Lower poles with 8 ft. should shed. H20 water to the rear first two pegs.

You can also turn it into a cocoon, rest in it for a while and then emerge from it with your new wings and fly home to civilization.
