Woodson Hotel began in early 1887 with the stone being obtained from a sandstone quarry north of town. This two-story Hotel with large bracketed wooden and pressed metal entablatures. You can see the white string course which connects all of the hooded window lintels on the first and second floor. Beveled corner entrance provides access to former hotel lobby. Designed by J.T. Black of Ottawa, Kansas.
The 21 room, 12 stove building open up on November 7, 1887. The guest list ranged from medicine shows or a small circus to the more famous like Buffalo Bill.

As Yates Center grew it received natural gas lines and telephone service in 1901. Over the years Woodson Hotel incorporated new stuff into the Hotel as it came available. Electricity and running water in town by 1906. In the 1920s the town of Yates Center paved its major streets with brick. Something that we can see in front of the Hotel.
On May 20, 1986 it was listed on the National Register as part of the Yates Center Courthouse Square Historic District.
In 2009, SWD Architects Inc. from Kansas City, Missouri was approached to develop a design for converting the hotel into apartments for senior adults. This included taking out the hotel rooms to make nine new apartments, a new elevator, manager’s office, community room, outdoor community space, and a small parking lot. The 600 square foot apartment rents for $460 a month, I have seen some past rent advertisements for $350/ month. All newer appliances come with the monthly rental.
