Woodstock 1969 changed the world: Officially known as the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, it was the peak of the 1960s counterculture movement. But before that, there was also The Monterrey Pop Festival, The Human Be-In, Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival, The Haight-Ashbury Movement, and many more all taking place in 1967, most in the summer: The Summer of Love. Prior to even that however, there was the beatnik movement. This video briefly touches on these subjects.

Interesting trailer. Will watch the film. I have been in the music biz since the late ‘60s, as a kid and still play. Was in radio, music TV and a journalist/publisher. Even sang “at Woodstock”....(jokingly)....as I was on tour at 15 y.o. in a Christian folk choir that toured half the U.S. and did 2 LPs,and we played the town of Woodstock during the festival. Several of us who were into rock/psychedelic/folk had been psyched, until we found out the festival had been moved to White Lake/Bethel. So, all that was left in the town of Woodstock was a handful of head shop owners, in their stores with day-GOLO posters and black lights. BTW, I JUST “saved” a real live ‘60s hippie VW transporter single cab, that I found out in Northern CA last month and shipped it half-way across the U.S....hadn’t moved in 40+ years and is painted with a big peace sign, etc. with Woodstock/San Francisco tags on it. A real time capsule...HAD to have it!

That’s awesome (far out?) about the van! It would be great if you could link to a photo of it.

I was a child in the ‘60s...too young to participate in the Hippie Movement (well, maybe did a little bit at the tail end) but was aware of it through stories in ‘Life’ magazine and the experiences of older friends. Back then, I felt fascinated by the changes that were taking place in society and really believed that they would be permanent. Perhaps some Hippie ideals have changed and are still with us, yet it’s kind of sad that for the most part, their dreams seem to have faded from our landscape.

You want there ideals to be present today well they brought disaster to the western society. Some of there ideals are still here and that's destroying the society more.

Hippies were called as such by a BBC Toff who didnt know what to do with us long haired colorfully dressed dancing down the streets kinda folks and he suggested that we were all just Hip as The Beats were as they called everything was ''cool'' and ''Hip" as they snapped their fingers in the air, and so we became known as Hippies though I only ever called myself a Head in London, mainly an Acid Head, I was 21 in London England in 1969, and the Americans my age group called themselves Freaks.. Only the squares called us Hippies.

Loved seeing Suzi Quatro. Her brother Mike Quatro opened up for Aerosmith in Port Huron Michigan, my first concert when I was 14 yrs old in Oct of 74. They are both loved in the Detroit area

Great work on this one. I remember the finger snapping beatniks. I was a little to young to be one but I thought it was cool. Thanks!

Love our intellectuals! Truly the Beats gave rise to the Folkies to the rise of pop rock and the '67 Summer of Love and unto the full blown 60s counter-revolution ... and it all ended in November '72.

I lived through the sixties in London and it’s really Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove W11 in West London that I would say is similar to Haight Ashbury. Carnaby Street was about commercial fashion and it’s not a place anyone lives, Notting Hill is an inner London residential area with a road called Portobello Road with a market and many unique shops! In the U.K. in 1969 we had the second Isle of Wight Festival with Bob Dylan returning to performing for the first time since 1966, there were other large festivals in Europe also, unfortunately they weren’t filmed very well and didn’t get as much attention in the mass media at the time!

It's pretty tough to have a video centered around music without playing any music.

I remember going to the college coffee house listening to folk music (One of my school friends actually sang and played) and poetry. Instead of clapping people sat silent or snapped their fingers. Labels like "beatnik" were frowned upon as it's just another square to be fenced in with. Why is it that people always seem to have a need to define or digitize everything ? Isn't it just as good to simply "be" without being tribalized ?

As nice as it sounds, there will NEVER be peace and love on earth...at least not on the earth as we know it. There is too much hatred. On the other hand, there are times that we need to fight for what is right! Sometimes you have to war in order to have peace! The world is full of good and evil, and you can't have one without the other....at least not in this lifetime anyway.

I always thought Joe McDonald was over rated. His appearance in this kind of reinforces this opinion.
