Woodturning a black walnut and spalted maple bowl (or dish?) How to steps are shown using our Harvey Woodworking lathe. With special guest finisher, Debbie Sapper! Wood turning a bowl can be so rewarding. Join us for our adventure!
In today's video Debbie and I will demonstrate the steps we took to turn a random piece of black walnut and some scrap spalted maple pieces into a pretty cool looking utility bowl (or dish?) After the sanding was completed, the finishing process started with Debbie applying two coats of “grain popping” BLO (boiled linseed oil), followed by 5 coats of rattle can spray lacquer, hand buffing down each coat with 0000 steel wool. I followed her with a brief slow speed buffing on the lathe followed by a buffed on coat of Carnauba wax.

Tom, Thank you! I knew looking at that rough blank that the grain would turn out interesting. Glad you agreed! Take care, Michael

Dad told me to use steel screws and run a bar of soap across the threads before you put them in. Thanks to dad for his insight decades ago ❤

Your Dad is one smart fellow! I have on occasion used an old candle to lube the threads. Soap would be a great substitute!

The walnut is a beautiful and rare find. Gorgeous reds in it. I know internet people always wanna give "advice". Hope you don't mind. 1- get you a mic or add voiceover commentary after you edit the footage 2 - larger drill but & short thick SS screws 3 - GLUE BLOCK ! Follow Jim at Sprague Woodturning & watch several vids to see how he does his glue blocks. Thanks for posting. Gave y'all a follow. 👍 It's a Beautiful bowl.

Comments and input are always welcome! I’ll use my corded mic for voiceovers but not if using tools in the shop. Too worried about the cord getting in the way. I sometimes use a glue block and have watched the Sprague channel. Very impressive projects! Michael

Your broken screw issues can be solved by using wood screws instead of drywall or deck screws. Your bowl is lovely. Walnut, especially from a crotch, is simply beautiful wood. You did well with it.

Doug, Agreed! And Thank you! These screws were square drive wood screws (at least that's what the box said🙂) . They had been used many many times before. I need to do some research on how many times a particular screw can be (impact) driven and extracted before it's torque rating is negatively impacted. Cheers, Michael

Use GRK screws and dip them in paste wax before you screw them in. You'll never have this problem and you won't have to worry bout splitting the wood when screwing them in.. Beautiful work BTW @@SapperWoodworking

Also, just a thought. The bowl turned out quite beautiful, but the finish turned the maple a yellow color. Try using a finish that is clearer. Also, if you break off a screw and a portion of it is exposed, just take visegrips to remove them. Will save a lot of time.

Absolutely agree. When I’m after a non-yellowing finish, I will typically use lacquer and occasionally a water-based finish. I appreciate the comments Michael.

I put bees wax on my screws, use deck screws, and pre-drill

That is a Fantastic Bowl. The spalted Maple stipes were a great addition to the bowl. One thing that I noticed was when you were driving the screws in that they sounded too tight going in. Maybe try larger diameter drill bits for your holes.

Never had luck with drywall screws they are too brittle, I switched to using steel wood screws and never had a problem since.
@SapperWoodworking
@SapperWoodworking 7 месяцев назад
Agreed! Drywall screws are sometimes not even good to use on drywall. And even steel decking screws (used in this case) can still snap. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I switched to the hardened deck screws . They dont break so easily

Not sure if I've come across deck screws that are labeled as "hardened" but the next time I'm in the hardware store I will have a look. Thanks for the tip! Michael

@@SapperWoodworking Your not wrong. They arent labeled as hardened but the common yellow deck screws at home depot or lowes are what I meant. They are stronger than the wood screws I used in the past and since I switched I havent broken one yet.

Glad to hear vise grips have worked for you! I usually just have the exposed screw break off. Cheers, Michael
