Turning a grotty piece of plywood into a vase with epoxy stripes ..
I was inspired to try this after seeing some work by Sarah Thirlwell who does some great turning using plywood and acrylics ...

Loved it. Might i suggest a plastic test tube so that water can be put into the vase. I've got them from 1/2" to 1-1/2" dia

Thanks Shelly .. I took a delivery of test tubes the other week .. i will have a look for the 1-1/2 though I didn't get anything that large .. I used pearlex powder for the colour it ended up a bit darker than I wanted ..cheers Andy

Thanks Jon.. I usually draw out ply or segmented pieces and have a rough idea of shape but the gnarly pieces and burls I just get them on the lathe and see where they end up .. 👍

Since I read *TopFineWoodworking. Com* , I think nothing will ever surpass it as an outstanding woodworking book. The book consists of attractive images as well as drawings and also reader-friendly text. I consider this book a "must have" since it supplies a broad range of information on just about everything working with woodworking and does it quite well.?

these vases always come out super cool but my biggest problem with them is that larger bottom isnt bored out more than the mouths opening. Like, looking at it would give the illusion it holds more than it actually does.

Hi Andy, Can you tell me the material you used to make the wood and resin container? is it reusable? Thank you very much. To make round molds I intend to give Teflon cylinders with the hope that the resin will come off easily. What do you think? ciao dall'Italia

I used off-cuts of moisture resistant MDF not reusable .. Never used Teflon cylinders sounds interesting .. cheers

Nice vase Andy, but why didn't you hollow out the bottom, before gluing the top section on? As long as you didn't turn the sidewall to thin, you could still have glued the top section on. It would have made the vase a lot lighter, and probably impress more people.

Cheers Len ... that was my plan all along but I the only tool that would touch it with any succes was the carbide .. I only had the square one and didn't want risk messing it up fighting the inside with that .. I thought about using the forstner bit but thought the heat may have effected the resin .. would definitely do things different if I do another .. 👍

It's a pressure pot .. helps to remove any bubbles from the resin 👍

Re: The Pressure Pot, how long do you leave the mold in there? What PSI is the tank filled to? Thanks... I would like to try the resin & wood, but don't know if I want to go for the whole Pressure Pot system. That said I am guessing the results without pressure would be hit or miss?

I've done quite a bit of casting without a pressure pot .. I use a slow setting epoxy so the bubbles have time to disperse I also think it helps using the pearlex powders .. if you were going for water clear castings a pressure pot or vac chamber would be the way to go .. I've only just started using a pressure pot I left it over night at 40 psi .. hope that helps 👍

Loved the vase. I have been watching more and more plywood turnings and I seems I have some 3/4 inch birch plywood in the shop from another project. I wasn't able to identify the type of glue you were using. Any suggestions on types of glue to use?
