Woodturning - A (smaller than intended) Hybrid Hollowform

In this video I waste a lot of resin making a small Hollow Form !! The piece of Horse chestnut burl I used was super dry and porous but I didn't expect it to suck up almost a litre of resin !! I contemplated adding more resin but the line would have been visible so I decided to make the piece smaller and put it down to experience !!

At first I thought the excess amount of wood was intended, so when I saw the blue resin hardened and shining, I really wanted to see a tiny ship there. A diorama basicly.

well hell, maybe if I read your description before i open my mouth i might have some of my questions answered. Also i might be able to learn the difference between chestnut and maple. Although to be fair, living in Pennsylvania, its been a long time since anyone has seen native chestnut.

You know what really messed with my head? When in the first seconds he drew his tool over to the far right, where you could see the background shining through the empty space in the wood and his tool still behaved as though a solid surface was there.

It always amazes me to see the dramatic transformation of the piece of wood you start with, to the finished product you end up with that becomes such a unique masterpiece. WOW! I always wondered if things ever went wrong for you where you didn't quite end up with what you initially planned, but I guess you still managed to make something valuable out of it anyway. WOW! Words just don't do your work justice. Thanks for sharing.

This is such a perfect example of how a piece some how dictates it’s own shape. The piece presents itself with all these possibilities. The master craftsman applies his skill, but listens and observes. As the two communicate, the master finds the final shape among the offerings. Wow! This felt like a “master class” today.

A hollowform is is that. A hollow form, it has no specific purpose besides being designed to hold fluids, so long as the diameter of the mouth is narrower than the widest internal diameter it's considered a hollowform. vases and barrels as well as some cups and bowls can are all considered hollowforms with a specified purpose. I heard the term closedform before but I have no clue what that is.

Horse chestnut extract is used as a blood thinner to reduce water retention , swelling of the legs and feet and reduce varicose veins. It's deadly to eat it raw or as tea. You can burn it in a campfire but as firewood to heat your home is risky. Beautiful wood though.

I was wondering if you could mention or make a video about the dangers of resin and proper safety for using it. You're always showing yourself grabbing a face mask for turning, but it would cool if you could mention that resin isn't food safe and show that you're wearing a gas mask or have ventilation for the resin. I only found out recently about these things from a random tweet even though I watch a lot of wood Turner's on RU-vid.
