Today's project is a quick project that can be great for the beginner or the experienced turner. They make great hand made gifts for friends and family.
This is one of the easier pepper mills to make. Unlike the traditional one where you have to create the top and body making sure that the length is correct, this one just requires a 1" hole to be drilled down the middle. You can't get any easier than that. I decided to pair this antique brass pepper mill with a kild dried piece of 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" cherry. You can make yours any length you want, but I went with 6" becasue of what I had in my wood pile.
I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!

You do a good job of explaining the process, thanks for showing how you put that together. I like that finish and I do like the way they look together, nicely done.

Very nice! I have several of the combo mill kits to be made before Christmas and this was a great reminder to get out to the shop and turn!! Take care!

Thank you so much! I'm such a procrastinator and I'm scrambling to get a few gift projects done before it's too late. Last year, I told myself to get started earlier.....well that didn't happen. ha ha - Ed

Hi Ed, You have a really nice looking pair there. LOL. Great job on duplicating the shape. It's not as easy as it looks!! The only comment I would make is that I leave the "Channel" for the pepper to fall through totally unfinished, as some people have allergic reactions to some things especially Walnuts and other Nuts. Great video Ed. Keep practicing with the skew, as you found out when it goes well the finish is so clean and smooth. It was the first chisel I was taught to use. Cheers, Huw

Thank you Huw! That is a great point about the walnut oil. I should have used something like mineral oil. I'll keep that in mind on the next one that I make. - Ed

I like them, Ed. I'm a fan of pepper mills anyway. You told me last video that you grew your beard back because it was too chilly without it. If Arizona is chilly, I guess you wouldn't make it up here in Ohio.
@WolfRidgeWoodworking
@WolfRidgeWoodworking 4 года назад
Thank you!! I grew up in Georgia and while we didn't get Ohio cold, it did get really cold in January and February. I've been in Arizona for 6 1/2 years and I admit it....I've gotten to where I really don't like the cold. All that aside, after you've had a beard for so long and you cut it off, it is much cooler. - Ed

Great job in explaining how you turn your projects!! So many wood turners don’t say a word in explaining and what tools they are using and how to turn. Thanks for explaining!!

Thank you Jon!! I'm a relatively new turner myself (1.5 years) and my goal is to try and help folks like I needed when I first started. I'm so happy to hear your feedback Jon. - Ed

Hey ed great videos. I like that they are not to long. One thing that could make it better are close up detailed pics at the end. Thanks for the content!

Thank you for watching Daniel! I typically put 4 or 5 detailed pictures at the end of the video. They are usually in the last 20 seconds of the video. - Ed

Great video! Having a sleight difference between mills was the way to go!. There is something to be said, which I think other wood workers would agree, going back to basics and using cherry wood instead of the exotic woods. Bringing back the cherry wood just seems like the old Americana! Beautiful work Ed, keep it up!

Thank you very much!! I do love the cherry blanks that I got from turningblanks.net. I want to turn a traditional pepper mill for myself soon. I really like the finish that the Ack's Polishing Paste put on them. It's somewhere between a matt and gloss finish. Thank you for making such great products! - Ed

Nice! This is a useful turn & build. I made a pepper mill using the same grinder as you however; for a somewhat cleaner look, I set the mechanism into a recess. Again great turn & build!

Thank you John! I thought about doing the same thing and when I make another one, I will put it in a recess. - Ed

I like the video, as always, but I'm curious as to how the bottom is done. How does the pepper get ground and out the bottom?
@WolfRidgeWoodworking
@WolfRidgeWoodworking 4 года назад
I wondered that too Gayle before I made it. The grinding mechanism is on the bottom of the metal piece and there is a 1" hole drill through the wood. As you grind the peppercorns, they fall through the drill through the hole. I hope that helps clear it up. Thank you for the support! - Ed

Ed, looks very nice. Wish I could do as well. I see you dilute your Mylands sanding sealer. Would you be willing to tell us your recipe for that? Thank you.
@WolfRidgeWoodworking

Thank you David! I do not dilute the Mylands. I just put it in a squeeze bottle to make it easier to apply. - Ed

They look great but do show how much practice you need to make exact copies of a piece..nice first attempt.👍
@WolfRidgeWoodworking
@WolfRidgeWoodworking 4 года назад
Thank you Stephen. There was no practice for me. Due to my work schedule, I don't have time to practice so when you watch my videos, it is the first attempt. They were not exact copies, but that's ok. - Ed
