I was watching your G3 review and came across this video. Wish I had watched it a week ago. I just published a video making one of these but it’s not elaborate or beautiful as yours. Great job!
Thank you very much. I’m glad you liked it. I can’t imagine a hobby that could be as much fun as woodturning! Thanks for watching! 😃😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Happy turning, .....Gord
great video! I am new to wood turning and picked up six of these and blanks for Christmas presents. Your video was very well done step by step and I also learned some basics some may take for granted as to what speed the lathe should be for certain applications and process. Thank you very much. New subscriber here.
Thank you very much, Glen. I’m glad you liked it. I do try to make my videos applicable to new turners. I hope other of my videos will be helpful. Thank you for subscribing. I appreciate the support. Thanks for watching!
I very much like the two different woods used and your way of making them , they look very nice Gord ! I have four more to make now on strength of the one I made for our Christmas raffle . Thanks to Mike and yourself for more inspiration! Cheers, Bram
ok. i liked em when mike turned em. i liked em when you turned em. they were both excellent, and i learned alot from BOTH OF YOU! i guess it comes down to who has the best beard.....lol. WAIT....that would be ME! good turn Gord. i gotta put this on my to-do list. AFTER snowmen, and Christmas ornaments! well done! have a good holiday!
Glad you liked it, Mike. I hope you have time to get through the list. Sometimes being under pressure makes me get things done that I otherwise take too much time working on. So if time is tight what are you doing wasting time reading this? 🤣😂🤣😂 Thanks for watching, Mike! .....Gord
Glad you liked it, Alan. I will be very interested to see what Mr. Waldt has to say about it. It might be a good indication of his sense of humour! 😳😳😳🤣😂🤣😂 Maybe it will be a good thing that he lives far far away! 😱😱😱 Thanks for watching, Alan, .....Gord
Hi Gord, Found you from the recommended list while looking at Gary's video. Fantastic looking pair of mills. I'm one of the others that posted a Pepper Mill by the way. The only concern I would have for using it for salt is that I sell mine and wouldn't want the buyer coming back to me in a couple of years time. Having said that I made a pepper grinder for my wife last Christmas from Laburnum and this year she might get a salt grinder from Ash. I have subbed and hit the bell. Cheers, Huw
If I was making them to sell I wouldn’t use a grinder for salt. Because they are for our use I am not worried about the salt. I can always replace the grinder mechanism if I need to. Thanks for watching, Huw. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎄🎄🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Happy turning, .....Gord
Hi Gord Awesome tutorial, learned something from it even though I have been turning these for several years! I live not far from you NW of Edmonton and have always advised everyone to use these for pepper only and was told the other day from someone that they do cease up here in Alberta from using salt. I totally enjoy your tutorials and because I am far from any turning club, these tutorials are a great help! Thanks! Cheers Al
Hi Al, Thank you very much. I’m happy that you like my attempts at video production. I have heard that salt is a potential problem but that it might not be too bad in our dry climate. The only way to know for sure is to try it. If the salt grinder lasts for a few years and has to be replaced I’m okay with that. They aren’t very expensive. If it doesn’t last very long I can replace it and have another pepper grinder to give away as a gift. The turning was the hard part and that’s finished. Either way I will think of it as a win. Thanks for watching, Al. 😃😃😃 Happy turning, .....Gord PS. Nice to hear from another Albertan!! 😃
Hello Gord Great Review Video You Such A Good Teacher. Again What Brilliant Job As Always On The Antique Salt & Pepper Mill's Thank You For Sharing My Canadian Friend 🇨🇦 👍 Cheers Scott from Scotland UK
I think they look great Gord. The color of the wood and the shape really go great with the grinder itself. I think it is a perfect match. Especially the shape. This video was full of tips and I had enough room in my head today to store them. As always a well described and pleasant video to watch. If and when I make a set I will pull this video up again. I do love pepper so I can see one in the making. Take care, Gary
I’m glad the buffer wasn’t full today, Gary. Mine is usually overflowing which is why reading instructions once just doesn’t do it. Luckily my wife usually pulls them out of the garbage so I can read them again later!! 😃😃😃 Thanks for watching, Gary! Happy turning, .....Gord
Beautiful, as usual ....:) As it happens, the day before Mike Waldt's video came out, I had ordered a few of these for Christmas gifts. So I have watched Mike's video several times, waiting for a large piece of spalted maple to arrive tomorrow! Now YOU come along ... I am overwhelmed by expertise ... and I appreciate every minute of it. Now I don't know whether to go to Wales or Red Deer and beg for lessons .... :) Thank you SO much for all that you do. Oh - an afterthought: I have a few friends who are colour blind, so I will make my salt shaker about an inch taller than the pepper ... to avoid confusion for them.
Ken, if I had thought of the colour blindness issue I would have made one with walnut the way I did and the other with walnut on the outside and birch or maple for the inside stripe. Wish I had thought of that!! If you make it to Red Deer you are always welcome in my shop!! 😃😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Happy turning, .....Gord
Gord, I've made well over a hundred of these mills and would definitely NOT use them for salt. I speak from experience. Salt will corrode the mechanism over time. Nice design and i like the little tray.
Hi Tom, As I said to others I’m not worried about the salt grinder lasting forever. They are cheap enough that even if it only lasts a few years I’m okay with that. If it turns out that it corrodes quickly I will just replace the mechanism and have another pepper grinder to gift to someone. The turning is finished and that’s where the time is invested. Besides, I do this for fun and I definitely enjoyed making them!! 😃😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Glad you liked the design, Tom. Thanks for watching. .....Gord
Nice project Gord. Have you considered using the lathe index to scribe the lines for the mounting holes? I made a drill guide like Mike Waldt's but, being a tool junkie, I picked up the Oneway Drill Wizard for projects that need multiple off center holes indexed.(it holds my drill and it can also hold my small router).
I wish you hadn’t told me about that, Bert. I’m sure you know that I’m a tool junkie, too! Now that I know about it I’m going to NEED that drill wizard. Ignorance sometimes really is bliss. Oh well, I will just tell Gayle that it’s your fault. You’re in a lot of trouble, my friend. 😃😃😃😃 Happy turning, .....Gord
Nice work as always Gord! Been super busy and haven't commented for a while but have watched every vid. I would love to pick your brain sometime. If you are willing. Glad the shoulder healed up as well.
Thank you very much. I’m pleased that you liked it. The shoulder is doing great. Thanks for the thought! 👍👍👍 I’m not sure that there is much to pick but you are certainly welcome to try! 😃😃 Thanks for watching, .....Gord
I really like those mills Gord. Your turnings really do them justice. However I did a quick google search and do not find them. Can you post a link to your source?
Two really beautiful looking mills Gord. I was very interested to see salt in one, as I was advised not to use salt as the mills aren't suitable, but you have proved they are fine. My second attempt had a similar design to yours, which I prefer. Thanks for the mention and a great video. Take care Cheers Mike. PS Great turn, not as good as .... lol ;)
Hi Mike, I’m not worried about the salt. These grinders are so low cost that even if I have to replace it in a few years it’s not a big deal. Glad my slightly demented sense of humour didn’t tick you off! I was sure someone would give me a hard time for that but they probably just think I’m nuts. According to my wife they would be correct!! Thanks for watching, Mike. Your comments are always appreciated, my friend!! 😃😃😃 All the best, .....Gord 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thanks for the tip, William. I have never heard of multicoloured peppercorns. I will mention that to SWMBO. She does the shopping. I didn’t think of mirror images until someone else mentioned colour blindness. I wish I had thought of it earlier! Can I blame you for not telling me earlier?? LOL 😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks for watching, William! Happy turning, .....Gord
I wouldn’t blame it on you, William. I have lots of relatives for that. 😃😃😃 She said she hasn’t seen multicoloured peppercorns but will look for them. Thanks again for the tip! .....Gord
Great job as always Gord 👍 can I ask a question regards the inside of these!..........do they need to be finished with any products and if so how do you get the whole inside of them coated?? Thanks for yet another great job love the colours 👍👍👍
I don’t use any finish on the inside. I don’t believe that it’s necessary. Thanks for watching, Gavin. 😃😃😃 I appreciate the support! Happy turning, .....Gord
Hey Gord, nice job. I'm actually in the middle of making a set myself. Just a thot...from my research, I found most are saying this grinder isn't the best idea for salt. It has the potential to corrode the gears. Might not be an issue here in AB cause of the low humidity. I'm just trying to make a matching salt shaker to go with the pepper grinder.
Hi Steve, Someone asked about the salt earlier. Humidity does make a difference and if the salt is dry I don’t think we would have much trouble here. Of course I was wrong once before. But I was only 10 at the time and have tried to avoid that happening again!! LOL Kidding aside, the grinders aren’t as expensive as I thought they would be so if I have to replace one someday that’s a lot quicker and easier than the turning!! Thanks for watching, Steve! Happy turning, .....Gord
No, Donny, my wife never did use them. She thinks they are more of a decorative/art piece than functional. So it’s hard to say whether it would still be holding up since it has not been subjected to any real use. Sorry I can’t be more help. Thanks for watching!
Gord, beautiful. Something I'm going to try next year, sometime. Three questions: What wood did you use? I didn't quite catch that. And, did you put a finish on the inside of the mills? If so, what kind, considering it has to be food safe?
I used birch and walnut for one. Birch and bloodwood for the other. Sorry I forgot to mention that! No finish on the inside. I believe the wood is as food safe as any finish would be. Thanks for watching, Marc! 😃😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦 Happy turning, .....Gord
You’ll have to talk to Gayle about that, Phil. She said, “What the heck is he doing watching RU-vid on his vacation?” Hope you guys are having fun!! Hi to Gail. 😃😃😃
Almost any trophy shop is able to make them or have them made for you, Tom. You just need to supply the design and most of them can help you with that.
