A great segment on how to bi-directionally turn a coffee scoop from a piece of scrap walnut wood on your lathe.
Check out this video where I make a similar style scoop from resin and coffee grounds: • Woodturning Basics: Tu...

Well done - nothing beats the smell of walnut being worked in the shop.

Thank you, Benjamin. Totally, totally agree. Walnut has to be my favorite wood to work with and that's certainly one of the reasons. Thank you for watching!

I made a scoop chuck out of 1.5" schedule 40 PVC. Cut a length half an inch longer than my shark jaws. Cut it lengthwise through one side only. Use a wood rasp to carve and smooth a notch for the handle. Diameter of the scoop end is critical. When it's pushed into the PVC, the kerf has to be open so the jaws can squeeze the PVC and hold the scoop. I like the kerf to be about 1/8" with scoop inserted. Works great. I'll have a video of it one of these days.

The best part was that you used a 10-cent jig instead of a $100 chuck

I am wanting to make these scoops. Please provide some measurements, like the diameter of the handle and diameter of the hole drilled where the handle is set. I could not tell the length of the 2 x 4. Thanks.
@industrialcomfort
@industrialcomfort 7 месяцев назад
Hi DDC, the length of the wood can be as short or as long as you'd like as long as the hole is centered so you have good balance on the lathe as the piece turns. You'll also want to ensure the piece isn't longer then the lathe's swing. Mine is 5" long with the hole centered at 2.5". The hole for the handle was drilled using a 1/2" bit. Sorry this information wasn't included. Thanks for watching!

You did awesome job on that. But I had to laugh when you said scrap wood. In my shop no such thing as scrap it has a home or heats the home.

Apologies, Robert. I mentioned that I was going to turn down the background sound but already have a bunch of videos in backlog that are uploaded and can't be changed. I also started making more with background music instead. The inside out ornament from last week is an example. Super sorry about that but it will be changing.
