Woodturning - In this video I combine red oak and purple sand cherry branches with some deep cast from Designer Epoxy to make this awesome hollow form. I really like the look of the branches and the style of this hollow form and we will see more of these in the future. Thanks for watching and please share with your friends.

Tip number 49 from "Woodturning for People Over a Certain Age:" CHAIRS! So true. So very, very true. Jim, I love this piece! I love how the cherry branches look like they're being stretched and being pulled in the direction of the curves of the hollow form. Very organic with great movement and color! And in the words of almost any great Chinese philosopher you could choose: "None of us are as young as we used to be, grasshopper."

Love that classic shape. It always reminds me of a ginger jar. That blue and silver at the top is stunning. I think that would be a beautiful color choice for a giveaway. If you try tis again try it in the deepest green you can get and mix it with the silver.I have to put this one in my top ten. Excellence and artistic vision achieved once again.👍

I really loved this piece Jim, & of course blues, purples & hyper-shift pigments are my favourite colours. When you put Dwayne or Baby Dwayne’s on the top to keep the wood from rising, could this be when the tops of the sticks absorb more of the resin colour (when it is in the vacuum pot)? Could this be causing the extra colour absorption on some of the top of the branches? Just a thought, I only know what I have learned from watching your channel. Anyway, another great video! Hope the house sells quickly for you & your wife. 🖖🏽
@SpragueWoodturning

No, I don’t think so, most of the branches remained submerged in the resin except for the three that escaped. We hope the house sells quickly too, lol. Thanks

Designer, Apoxsee, another beautiful bowl. I really liked how it turned out the cherry, and red oak branches. How dry were they as far as moisture content. I would love to see one done with walnut and maple with black Apoxsee maybe a little bit of sparkles in it. when you were talking about sumac, is that like what we have in the states poison sumac?
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 8 месяцев назад
I was referring to red sumac, it’s not poisonous. The branches were less than 5%. They were in my kiln for a year or so. Don’t have any access to walnut branches but that would be cool even though they are mostly light in color with a very small black pith area. Thanks

If you do a taller, skinnier project: I think it would be cool (though take longer) if you did multiple smaller pours in different colors to get the dips in multiple places. Would be a good chance to use all the hypershift colors if you want it to be more subtle, or you could use the same color but reduce/increase the pigment load to make an ombré or Gradient look.

Another wonderfully beautiful piece!!!! Question: Why do you cycle your vacuum chamber? Why don't you find the sweet spot of air pressure and just leave it then for however long you want? Thanks again for the great content. Friday's wouldn't be the same without Sprague Woodturning!! I was up early today and thought oh good Friday! then I remembered you don't upload until 9am and was all bummed out! lol Designer Epoxy.

I personally find by cycling it on and off the air pockets will get filled sooner with the epoxy and will reduce the bubbling action. Thank you very much!

Stunning work,absolutely beautiful piece.im starting out wood turning, could you advise about which woods work better with epoxy?cheers from uk.
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 8 месяцев назад
Stick to harder woods like maple, cherry, walnut and other woods with the same hardness. Softer woods will absorb more resin and cause resin staining. I personally don’t mind it, but softer woods are just more difficult to work with. Hope this helps. Thanks

It is a lovely looking piece again this week, you could make something very similar with only resin. Would mean you would have to pour resin cylinders but it would give you more control over diameter and colour to achieve an amazing pre determined effect/pattern (and ill be looking forward to that lol). Love that blue even without any mother of pearl or hyper shift, would love to see that metallic resin more too though 👍
@SpragueWoodturning
@SpragueWoodturning 8 месяцев назад
Great idea. Just need to figure out what to cast the resin pieces in. Thanks

@@SpragueWoodturning yeah, I was thinking tubes of some kind. Either plastic or cardboard but maybe even a soft metal perhaps. The plastic might warp if they get too hot so not sure, maybe metal/plastic/wooden moulds that split in two? Could use mould release or cling film to cover them so the resin doesn't stick? lol

That turned out very nice! I like the colors. When you talked about elongated shapes of the wood, I thought an hourglass shape might be interesting, to double the amount of them. The piece would probably need to be longer than that one.

Yes it certainly would need to be. Thanks

Ooh an hourglass would be awesome, such a classic and interesting shape, and maybe possible to make a functional one with hypershift but light or no pigment?
