Cherry Plum is always one of my favorite woods to turn. It's beautiful grain and color along with the distinctive bark, never disappoint. I tried Acks Abrasive and Polishing pastes and they really made the piece feel and look even better!

Great turn Phil. Always enjoy watching your creations unfold. I have an old heirloom Cherry willow tree in the yard that is a year from being taken down. It base is 8 ft tall by 22 to 26 inches across. I accidentally took down one of the 2 trunks this past spring. Roughly 16 feet long by 10 inches plus. I slabbed one section of that and made a live edge shelf that I installed last week. The main base has over 30 burls on it. I'm gearing up with new chisels and Chuck's etc.. to have some lathe fun. Your videos are spurring me to get my garage/ shed rebuilt so I have a 4 season work space. Look forward to your next turn.

Howdy Phil I always like watching you turn Plum ...... I have been using Ack's for about a year ....I like it so much .....some of the bowls I have turn and then applied Ack's people do not believe it is wood ! .....So smooth and shiny ....My wife just got out some old brass candle holders and I put them on the lathe and use Acks to clean them , did not take long at all and they now look like gold ! I have got some on bark ....no problem just use a acid brush and comes off easy , it more or less spreads it around a little . Such a beautiful piece ..... keep on turnin' If a tree could talk .....

The polishing paste put a deep gloss on the wood without making it look all plasticky and flash - without putting such a glare on it that you can't see the grain. Great stuff. It's a lovely bowl. Thank you very much indeed for sharing and see you soon.

Yet another beautiful example of your work, the contrast between the outer bark and the grain filled interior is outstanding. One thing you may be able to help me with. Whenever I try to use sanding sealer applying it with a paper towel as you use, my paper towel disintegrates and I get tiny white pieces sticking all over the piece. I then have to wash off with meths and start over using cloth. Bless you Phil.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 4 года назад
Thank you very much, Alan! I do NOT use a paper towel for my finishes. You are quite right, that will never work. I use a cotton cloth and/or a brush. Well, even if I use a brush I still use a cloth to wipe away brush marks. I'm sorry if I never made that clear. Phil

Gosh Phil, does Tuffy have access to a limitless supply of Cherry Plum wood? This looked to be an odd shape when we first viewed it but that is never going to stop you weaving your magic. I love it when I hear you say that you have no idea what shape you are going to try for. It means that you are going to be guided largely by what the wood 'has to say' about it. As we listen to your thought patterns as you seem to communicate with the wood seeking what it wants to say about proceedings & the result is another masterpiece. As always with this Cherry the grain & bark are spectacular as the bowl flows from your hands. I have, once again to watch this video a number of times & NEVER get bored. Shape is excellent AS is the finish applied as you are always looking for the best finish for every project. Keep safe & well my friend & keep the videos rolling. Don from South Aust.

Tuffy does seem to have a lot of the Cherry Plum at his disposal, Don. I love turning it and it always produces a fine looking piece. Ya know, when I was a woodworker and not a turner, I used to scoff at people that said they turn the wood until it becomes what it wants to be. Just didn't make sense to me, as a woodworker. Now, I get it. Staying home, keeping safe. Stricter stay home orders arrived today. Dang, I'm just about sick of it! LOL!

Hi Phil, niece piece as usual. I’ve used both of the Acks products for a couple of years and really like the finish I get from doing so. Of course my pieces are a lot tamer than you normal Phil-wood. Even when I do natural edge/bark on (if it stays until the end😁) I’ve used it. If it gets on the bark, a natural bristle paint brush, cut to about 2” bristle length, works great to work it out without messing up anything. Thanks for another good video. Stay safe and well so you can keep them coming. Cheers, Tom

You are weird, Roma! LOL! There, now you've heard it again! I live on a couple acres that are full of trees, very shady. As in, VERY shady. It was just a natural thing to name the channel. Simple, like me. I'm well, I hope you are too and having time to yourself, now and then.

Beautiful piece Phil, love the grain and the bark. Don't think I've ever had a cherry plum.

Tuffy tells me it's a small, tart, plum. I've never had one, either.

Hey Phil, your bark is showing! Hehe, lots of bark on this one an it’s gorgeous. Wow, that Acks really put a beautiful shiney finish to it. Nice job my friend!

Maybe, Kerri, but then I would lose some of the bark? Thank you for the thought!

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I honestly know nothing regarding turning. It was just my first thought when you were going over the rough piece. Thank you for the clarification of the thought process! 🙂

This is an odd one for me. I really like the grain so much in this that I prefer the bottom to the top. It's one of those rare times when I actually wanted you to remove the bark. That almost never happens.

Hi Phil. If I send a work of art to you, can you show it in galleries in America?

I wouldn't know how to do that, Fatema. I've never shown any of my work and not sure I've even been to a gallery.

Hi Phil. Nice job. I picked up my first piece of plum today. I’m looking forward to turning it. Thank you for the inspiration. I’m having trouble getting a Sandoflex here in Australia. Do ya have any ideas where I could order one from in the US please?

Thank you, Greg! I really don't. Lots of viewers from there and the UK report they are difficult to find and if you do, the refills are even more difficult to obtain.

Thank You Phil....Cherry Plum, even spalted has such a warm golden/cherry color (but than I am slight red, green color blind, ugh). Phil you have always said that you are not artistic. I feel an artist knows how to approach and work a project. An artist, I feel, also knows when enough is enough, when to stop. I would have to say Phil you are 2 for 2. Guess who the artist is ???..(starts with a P & rhymes with skill)...HA, TM

Well, I will agree with you, Tuffy. Knowing when to stop is an art but it doesn't come naturally. Lots of errors along the way but that's how we (I) learn. It's hard to make a mistake with Cherry Plum, it's just so beautiful!

Thanks, Mike! I buy a large box, I think it's either 50 or 100. I put them in a zip lock bag along with the rag I use. It'll keep them moist for a couple days then I toss them.

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Ah, thanks Phil. I found a supplier on ebay, although I don't think they're going to be very cheap here in the UK. I have purchased 12 for about 5 bucks.
