I was given a very old Crown Green Bowl, made from Lignum Vitae wood. This was quite a tricky project and I nearly gave up a couple of times, as it was such a dense and heavy wood to turn.
It has turned out really nice, and I think that I have retained some of the character from the original piece.
Thank you for watching.

Note this is NOT an instructional video, or designed for any education purposes, it is simply my own personal steps on my wood turning journey.

I have seen these bowls at so many boot sales over the years & never made the connection as to the timber inside. So that's a wake up call for me going forward. I finally quit work forever just over a year ago & soon bought a lathe. Same model as yours as it happens. My head is full of things I want to do, but this summers task will be to buy some Lignum. Thanks for taking the time to show this. Stay safe.

Thanks to this video I bought a couple of these off eBay - very hard wood, definitely needed the carbide! Very happy with the result, wife wants a 2nd one now for a matching pair. Thanks for the inspiration 😀👍

I was waiting for it to pop off again. But it didn't and it's beautiful. If I hadn't watched the video I wouldn't have guessed what it started as.

Thank you. It really tested me, as it was so hard and dense.

Wow, Lignum Vitea is the hardest densest wood in the world. It will sink in water it's that dense. And with over 4390ftlbs on the Janka hardness scale. Also you do know that it will still be around in a few centuries. Great job I love it. ;-)

Lignum Vitae is really hard wood. I haven't had the opportunity to turn it yet but I do remember working with it as piston ring material for an old steam reciprocating pump. Had to use carbide blade to cut piston ring ends. Nice job on preserving to the end. Imagine it dulled the heck out of standard HSS tools. Great result in the end. Beautiful bowl.

Thank you very much. Yes, the HSS tools really struggled! Should have used carbide sooner!

Just when you thought you'd seen it all! Really interesting. Now I'm off to Google lignum vitae.. I always thought they had some lead weight inside.

I just used a face plate with 4 x 2inch screws. It was one VERY solid piece of wood to turn. Thanks for watching
