Woodturning - Erosion

In this video I turn a carved vessel from a Cherry log .. I had to change the plan on this piece after finding numerous cracks, which normally wouldn't bother me but these cracks I found pretty characterless and the wood was pretty bland. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to try some carving loosely based on rock erosion seen on some coast lines .. I think it turned out pretty cool, but will definitely try it on a better piece of wood next time ..

It's beautiful! Would make a lovely fruit bowl - they're best when they can get air through them so they don't build up moisture. It's a very elaborate fruit bowl, but why not? It would look stunning on the sideboard with or without fruit in it!

trypophobia is not an accepted, actual phobia but seen as a widely common aversion - sure it'd have an effect if you were averted but it's just "disliking it" - but it wouldnt be as strong as e.g. arachnophobia

@@neophobia404 anything can be a phobia - there are people out there who are afraid of knees. It’s the phobia that’s a condition, not the specific thing you’re afraid of. That being said, this bowl did give me the squicks in the thumbnail but watching it being made, I came around - it’s beautiful like everything Andy creates.

Oh how strange! I was thinking of a wasp's nest when I first glanced at this. I have never considered myself to have any form of trypophobia. But I do not care for wasp's nests at all. So, maybe it is the trypophobian effect of the wasp’s nest that makes me shudder just thinking about it! …… (Trypophobian… is that even a word?) 😆 As much as I LOVE Andy's work and do think this piece is stunning, it gives me the heebie jeebies…

My most triggering one was Tom and Jerry (the much older cartoon where it was two guys and not voiced at all) episode where Jerry ate the swiss Alps cheese after stealing it and then later tom ate some well they started have holes appear on them in random spots and kept coming till they were eventually chased away by mice and that is how the episode ended x.x eef that is probably my worst Edit: The episode is called "Tom and Jerry: The Swiss Trick" btw

Boy this was longer than I thought it would be... I had a very strict shop teacher in middle school. Was super anal(rightfully so) about everyone drawing the blue print of what they wanted to make in class, then working on it. I believe it was a two week ordeal. First week is submitting designs. Second week obviously was building them. I wanted to make a wooden skull that would hold pencils. I drew up the designs first day and then submitted them. He rejected it stating it was too hard a project and suggested I make a clock instead. The problem with that was my brother made one two years before plus a shelf the year before I was in shop. I submitted a basic clock and he approved it. First day I cut everything for the clock and began to hunt for a nice chunk of wood to start my skull. After finding a piece of Birch(I learned my lesson I assure you) I set about shaping it by hand. I measured for my cut along the top of the skull for the separator and asked my teacher for permission to turn the machine on. He refused stating I wasn't working on my dumb clock. From there I figured I'd hunt through my dad's shop and find a saw. Imagine a middle school kid(6th or 7th grade I can't remember) with a hand filed piece of Birch trying to cut it with a hand saw....wasn't pretty. I finally gave up and left the top piece off and worked the stain/paint...By this time I was a few band-aids in haha. I chose a light stain for the base skull and an off white to paint the teeth. I couldn't think what color I should make the eyes, so after trying to apply my forth or fifth band-aid, I gave up and just squeezed some blood into the eye sockets and brushed it around. After clear coating, sanding, more band-aids, and finally adding pencils I had completed my project. I was super proud and decided to take my creative genius to show off to my teacher. He was not amused one bit, clearly noticing the amount of blood staining the wood(probably from experience) painted onto the eyes. He pulled me aside with the principal and I was nearly suspended. Worst part is they threw the damn thing away. Don't know why I shared this story, but seeing you grind out those holes brought me back to making that skull lol. Cheers and sorry for the novel lol

I am sorry you were not encouraged in your endeavors. It makes kids hate school and hate trying to do things. You did not have a good teacher. Maybe you wouldnt have banged your hands up if he had helped you properly and treated your enthusiasm with respect and appreciation instead of seeing you as a bother. This is why i homeschool my kids.

I had an ornimental fruit tree die some time ago. I intended to drop it and block it up for fire wood. Black carpenter ants had infiltrated and had an extensive network of tunnels throughout the tree. The only parts of the tree that saw the wood pile was the limb wood. I got some beautiful pieces out of that old tree. Your project reminded me of the ant holes in the wood. Great project by the wayo
