Watch a complex segmenting project create a fabulous "space age" pattern. You will see many different ellipses appear as it is being turned. I chose to pattern the vase after a Minton Secessionist design from the early 1900's. I found the resulting arc of the vase to be perfect for the pattern I knew would appear. I also have another surprise for you in the video. Enjoy!

Very nice. I would like to offer you a tip. Go and watch some of the videos on "riving" knives and then put one on your saw. I worked without one for years but finally fitted one with no regrets and a big improvement in safety. (Crafted in Montana).

Brilliant variation of the Celtic Knot glue up, being able to see that a small profile adjustment at the bottom would fix the shape of the knot takes years of experience. I like the wings you've ground on your roughing gouge, first time I've seen that, which is surprising given the versatility it provides. Can see one of these in my future. Thanks for sharing.

Does look better with the second turning. Question, how long do you leave the finish in the gun between cleaning? I have the equipment, use the equipment but clean up after each spray. This makes for a lot of thinner being used up and then i revert back to the rattle can finishes. Please help.

I clean the gun after each use. My gun is very small and only holds about 1/2 cup of finish. I don't seem to be using much thinner though. Each cleaning only uses about a cup of thinner. Thanks for watching. Tom

Thank you for asking! I was looking for a unique and challenging design to create so I researched vases. It was a design in the 1920's that became very popular with ceramics. I have since been told that it is called a celtic knot in many circles. Thanks for watching!

Brilliant, piece. Quick tip, for the celtic knot however. For it to be absolutely perfect, you must remove the equivalent material on cuts 2/3/4 ie the remove the same thickness as the board you are putting in (in this case purple heart 10mm thick?) If so, after you have glued in the first piece, and you rotate 90deg, you then must remove the same amount of material to compensate, and again when you rotate for the next 90 degrees, you must remove the same 10 mm again.that way she's apples. If you have a dado blade, make the insert material the same thickness as the dado blade. Apologies, if you know this.

Hi Tommy, That has to be the most beautiful vase I have seen turned. So glad neither you or the vase were hurt when it came off the lathe. I make a lot of Celtic Knot pens and I always have a smile on my face when the straight lines turn into the curves. Fantastic work sir!!! Cheers, Huw

Tommy, Very, very cool but I missed something! I didn't see the part in which you cut the sections from the initial 3 piece block. And didn't see how you glued those sections (must be 6 or 8 anyway?) together. VERY interesting piece but I can't guess how to do anything similar.

At about one minute into the video I show cutting the block in two after which I glue in the purple heart section. One of the next clips is cutting the block, with the purple heart, in two again and gluing it back together for the second time. I didn't show the next two cuts as it would have been rather redundant. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and don't be afraid to try just be very careful.

Beautiful Work Tommy, I'm not so sure about space age though. The design is called a "Celtic Knot" and has been around for quite a while and as you found out the challenge is to get it to come out equally on all loops. Nice Work

Thank you. This is one of my favorite assemblies because of the challenge of making the loops equal. As for the reference to space age, I was unaware of the Celtic Knot design name. Be extremely careful on your set up. They are very difficult to cut. Take into consideration the loss of wood between cuts and joints so they match in glue up. Good luck!

Thanks. 99% of the wood I use is salvaged from a burn pile at a cabinet shop. So I feel that I am on a wood reclaiming mission. On this particular vase, I did not want too many segmented cuts as I had already have several in the design. Thanks for your comments! Tom
