Woodturning Olive Vase - Green to Dry to Finished

The last time I visited Arizona, I brought back some trunks of olive and mesquite. This piece was a smaller section from an olive tree. Most of the piece was sapwood without the usual dramatic heartwood figure. Observing this and talking it over with the wood, we decided to turn a vase. The wood was still wet so we had to rough turn it and let it dry. While rough turning, a drill took care of the pith - the root of all evil cracks.
A year later, we decided it was dry enough to finish turning. It is finished with shellac friction polish and buffed to a nice sheen.
The vase is 3 inches in diameter and seven inches tall.
Enjoy!

Alan, that's beautiful, mate. I turned an olive vase about 3 weeks ago, from a slimmer log which had dried nicelyin my workshop. I was delighted with the result, though mine is slimmer in 5he belly due to the log size. I adore olive wood's looks and its wonderful turning characteristics. Cheers, mate, stay well.

Beautiful, Alan. I love turning green Olive wood. Neighbors come into the shop and ask, “what is that smell?” It smells like olives from all the wet curls on the floor. It is getting harder and harder to find. Take care my friend.

Ahh yes, the smell is much better than walnut. :) Alan

Good work. Love olive. I didn’t catch it when you said it in the beginning. Like your bottom hollow technique as well. Thanks for sharing.

Looks very nice. Makes the vase I’m working on look more like a distorted cylinder 😂

I agree, Alan. It is definitely beautiful. It took a lot of patience to wait a year to finish it. Stay safe. (I get my second shot in a week). Bill

The shellac helped to make it pop. I have been trying to rough turn my pieces like you did on this one, using a bowl gouge. It's different. Not sure if it is faster than the roughing gouge. Hoping it will be easier to do.

I use my bowl gouge because it does the job and I do not need a tool that does only one thing. Roughing gouges are great if you have one. I just do not chose to buy one. Alan

Nice job. Couldn't you have just put a finish on it since it didn't crack anyway?
@AsWoodTurns
@AsWoodTurns 3 года назад
There is always distortion when drying - not only cracks. so... No unless you want distortion in the final result. Alan

Do you run into problems with your drilled holes becoming oval and/or shrinking after drying? I'm turning green bud vases that will get a 3/4" glass tube. I don't know if I should undersize the green hole and ream it out when dry.

Count on green wood distorting when drying. You have it. Alan
