It can't be woodturning if I'm not turning wood... can it?!?! 🤔
Join me for the launch of my 'Curiois Creations' series - and watch my very first experience of turning resin unfold! That's right... no wood involved whatsoever 😮
The 'Curious Creations' series aim to be more of a vlog-type genre of various fun projects that I'm playing about with, as opposed to my tutorial based videos.
This video was filmed quite a few months ago before I had experience of turning resin. I was gifted the blank by Mark of TQ Blanks (link below) who cast it specially for me. I decided that the size of it was PERFECT to lend itself to making a hanging ornament/bauble with when combined with one of my large DIY bauble kits.
I have to say, I went through a range or emotions turning this piece - stick around for long enough and you'll see! 🤣

Woodturning is a potentially dangerous hobby.
This video is a demonstrative video for entertainment purposes and although it provides commentary on the techniques I personally use, there are many different ways to approach wood turning.

When turning resin. I use a used toothbrush for removing the resin from the work piece. Keeps my fingers out of the way, and I can keep the work piece turning. The toothbrush brakes the resin up and removes it. And it doesn't leave tool marks on the resin.

That is an awesome tip David, thanks! I have used one to remove it since this video, but only when the lathe wasn't running. Didn't realise it would break it up whilst spinning. I'll be giving that a try!👍🏻😀

Wow Emma I love it thats one bad ass face shield too is the bauble glass or plastic am tempted to have a go
@TheTinyTurner
@TheTinyTurner 4 года назад
Colin the bauble is glass. I do offer plastic but you'd have to contact me to sort it out as they aren't on the site. They look naff in comparison though. The face shield is a JSP Powercap. It's awesome!! 👍🏻

Well done Emma, I have turned a few pieces of resin and enjoy the medium, especially once polished. I prefer a wood element as well, as you mentioned, but overall, the mess does tend to dilute the enjoyment. I only have a very small shed and the stuff gets everywhere and it takes a long time to clear away. I do have carbides but have always used traditional tools and found them OK.. Last effort was a doughnut and now have your blank on the lathe..GREAT video lass
@TheTinyTurner
@TheTinyTurner 4 года назад
I have since turned quite a bit of resin, but it takes me so long to edit that this is very out of date now! The wooden element certainly helps, and the mess is unbelievable. Yet we still keep going back for more 😄 I hope your blank is acceptable and you create something beautiful with it 💜

@@TheTinyTurner it is a beautiful blank Emma thank you.. just a bit nervous I don't want to spoil it so its turned to cylinder and now I will think where to go next..:)

I just subscribed 😀 I seen you in Martin's live, love your accent, loved this video, I'm not a turner yet but I have watched a few videos and as you mentioned most people seem to use carbide tools so I assumed you couldn't use traditional tools, good to know you can 😀 thank you for sharing 🙏😀
@TheTinyTurner
@TheTinyTurner 4 года назад
Haha thank you for subscribing!! If you watch Saturday's live, you'll get a lot more of the accent, and in its 'raw' form too! 😆 And yes, you certainly can use traditional tools for resin which saves you good few quid! 👍🏻

I have seen someone use the streamers in a second project.. the original resin was UV reactive and was cast into a second blank and turned to a sphere, mounted on a base that had a small UV bulb in it.. was quite effective.
@TheTinyTurner
@TheTinyTurner 4 года назад
That sounds pretty awesome Derbyshire Steve! 😆 It would be like a UV spiders web in a sphere!

Very nice Emma, I enjoy watching you turn this. I like your methods and tool control. The face shield you use, what brand is it, I'm due to change mine, and I would prefer to have something with dust filters built in, so I don't have to wear a respirator and a separate shield?
@TheTinyTurner
@TheTinyTurner 4 года назад
Thank you! The faceshield/respirator is a JSP Powercap. Not cheap but not as expensive as some of the other options, plus it is a lot more comfortable than some of the alternatives. Axminster sell it too but under their branding. They are excellent. I bought a second battery too as I tend to turn for longer than 8 hours when I'm on one, so I don't have to wait for it to charge. Plus I never leave anything charging overnight and two batteries means you can charge one whole you're working using the other. 😊
@DiemenDesign
@DiemenDesign 4 года назад
Ah, ok, didn't real is it was powered respirator, which is fine and still a good idea. A friend was look at a setup with a Shield similar to yours but the dust extractor plugs into it. More research is needed me thinks. I need to get more videos up too, lol.
