Woodturning Stunning Elm Burl becomes Bud Vase

In this video i mill an 80mmx80mmx220mm spindle blank from a seasoned Elm Burl and turn it into a Bud Vase.
I begin by milling the burl on the bandsaw to square a piece for the lathe. Once the piece is mounted on the lathe and brought to round I turn a tenon on one end to mount the piece in my chuck so I can bore a 20mm hole down what will be the neck of the vase. With the hole bored I'm then able to start removing waste material.
As I begin turning I discover that there are some severe cracks through the piece where it has moved while drying. I stabilise the cracks in the neck with epoxy and saw dust to prevent it breaking apart and continue turning. When I have the desired shape i decide to leave the other cracks as a natural feature of the vase.
I sand from 150 through to 600 and apply oil before applying sanding sealer and finishing with friction polish.
The end result is a beautiful Bud Vase and the figuring in the grain of the Elm Burl is exquisite. The cracks also add character to the piece.
Flower arrangement credited to my gorgeous wife.

The pattern in the wood looks amazing. It looks like fire or smoke patterns. And I think the crack makes it look even better and more natural. I think this deserves more views. Maybe you shouldve made more end pictures with better lighting. Im going to look up more woodturning videos of Elm wood now

Great video, love the beautiful wood. Here's a small suggestion, before you start turning , cut the corners off and save them for future pen projects. Very nice work!

sad that you didn't fill the cracks with tinted resin, glue or some other liquid base that could be turned, so much is done these days with those substances. it would have taken longer to wait for each to harden then turn. ugly can be so, so beautiful in the finished piece.

Alan Mackay thanks Alan. Seeing it now I regret filling the cracks on the neck but I think they needed it to maintain structural integrity. The wall thickness got quite thin while working to achieve the shape I wanted. Glad I didn't fill the others, they are a nice feature.

Don't get hung up on defects or you'll just make shavings.

you made a good job of filling the voids in top part, why did you not fill the cracks in the rest, it would have looked much better than those dreadful splits, just my opinion.
@NathanCummingWoodturning
@NathanCummingWoodturning 5 лет назад
I would have preferred not to fill the cracks at the top, it was only for stability as it was a vase and the neck was thin to get the form I wanted. I much prefer leaving natural defects where possible to maintain the character of the wood.

It's a lovely Vase Nathan, but I would have preferred that you had filled the the other cracks and holes with resin also. It looks good as is, but I would like to see it with the holes and cracks filled.

Len mullin Due to the size of the cracks I felt having such obvious scars would ultimately detract from the overall appearance, I prefer not to fill natural cracks unless to provide structural integrity. Thanks for watching.
