Woodturning: The Locust with a Crown!

Thank you to all my subscribers and viewers! It has been a few weeks since my last upload, largely due to shop upgrades and general craziness. I hope everyone is well!
This is my 23rd filmed project, and it was new territory for me in several ways. I have never turned black locust before, and it is tough stuff! Yes, it turned my lathe into a bucking bronco until I could tame it with my sharp bowl gouge. And yes, undoubtedly, there will be some who wish I had not neutered that gorgeous piece of bloodwood by carving and piercing it with the dremel. But I have wanted to learn how to carve and pierce turnings for a while, and this seemed like a suitable candidate. I hope you enjoyed the process. I sure had a bunch of fun in addition to all the fretting and self-doubt as to whether it would even work out without destroying either the lathe or the piece or me... The eagle-eyed might have noticed a clamp attached to the banjo. Well, half-way through the project, I realize the screw bolt that tightens the tool rest in the banjo quit on me and lost its threads. I eventually realized I could switch it out with the tail stock bolt and it works okay now. Now, I'm looking forward more than ever to a lathe upgrade... some day... maybe...
Cheers to all!

I worked on my grandfathers lumbermill as a kid and did some woodworking in the wood shop. I now work in a pallet shop operating a forklift and pallet grinder. All night I smell the wood breaking up and grinding to chips and dust and it brings me back. I sat day dreaming about working the mill and rolling logs last night. When I break out the chainsaw or brush cutter the smell brings me back to felling big maple and pines. The occasional oak.

That is .. it's .. not only is it totally unexpected as an end piece, but it's SUPERB ! I had best start buying lottery tickets, I think .. Honestly, David; I never cease to wonder at the creative mind that makes wood-turning so fascinating a craft (to watch, I mean). You blokes pick up a chunk of {something}, turn it for a bit while you febrile brains swing into action .. and then, after some work, there it is - a wonderful THING !!! I'm glad you're young: you'll see me out and then some. [grin]

People dislike every video, just people with such fragile confidence it makes them feel better to put others down. This piece is not for me but I still recognise the skill and thought put into it and he is and incredible craftsman
@jcs6206
@jcs6206 3 года назад
Often it's not people with "fragile confidence" (I assume English isn't your first language but I think I know what you're trying to say), for channels like this (that tend to only draw in adults) thumbs down are often in reference to video quality production, over production (like long intros that have nothing to do with with the topic), loud music, people speaking too much or not at all and literally a million other things that people didn't like about the video... or they just thought the end result was bad (different people have different tastes); but it's usually not because they think a simple thumb down means anything other than disapproving of something.
@andrewvanlaar9614
@andrewvanlaar9614 3 года назад
It can also be that someone did not like a technique someone used in a video or they did something "the wrong way". People also might have safety concerns about how people do things too. That lathe was travelling a ton and I bet that got some thumbsdowns. Dumb reason to do that but hey... people are people.

The production of your "films" is an outstanding quality. I would find it unusual, (to say the least), if you have not had professional/artistic training in this matter. Is this what you do for a living and your turning, as good as it is, is your hobby? Well turned! Well filmed! Well done! B

Bryan Holden I have asked myself the same question and eventually David the same. From what I recollect, he is self taught in his production of videos. Regardless, the fellow does have a God given talent in what he does with both wood and videos. I wish I were only half as good and consider myself lucky. One thing I would like to know about is his source of wood. For me to buy some of those woods where I live would break the bank account.

@DavidAdamsen 4 года назад
Thanks so much, Bryan! I have been looking through a camera lens since I was a kid, and I like to think I’ve picked up some tricks by studying people like Ric Ergenbright, but I’m self taught for the videography, unless RU-vid tutorials counts. A lot of my wood comes from eBay, which I’ve found to be a fairly good place to get exotic ready-to-turn pieces for a decent cost. But yes, it’s an investment of sorts. An investment in my viewers! 😃

@@bryanholden6487 I'm an enthusiastic hobby woodturner and by a stroke of luck I've made friends with a tree surgeon who supplies me with wood and in return I help him out occasionally. Most of his wood if freshly cut but every so often he is tasked to remove a tree that has fallen or died years ago. I also buy exotic wood from ebay but I've found that prices have gone up quite steeply in recent years.

First of all, you knocked it out of the park again. I love the pattern on the bowl as well as the lid. Just incredible. Is the pot available? I hope so. Second, you used a felt tipped tool attached to the dremel . I am curious what was the purpose of that action? And thirdly, what a difference (approximately 2000+- miles) made on May the 9th. In Texas, it was at least 80F and either sunny or rainy, I don’t recall exactly. But I can guarantee it was not snowing. Beautiful scenery out your front door. The pictures you showed of the spring are always breath taking. Thanks so much for letting us see your work.

I know this could be considered a weird reason for liking your work, but I like that you show sharpening a chisel! The machine intrigues me. :)

I just randomly bumped into your video and started watching all the videos. Loved it a lot. And I notice you say “Please subscribe” at the end of every video I just want to say you don’t have to say that. 😍
