Yep, that's right, I cut my finger on the bandsaw, luckily it was very minor. Just a reminder to me not to rush, and to think before I do things.
Today's project is a cookie/biscuit pot. I had to save this piece of Ash when we were cutting the firewood last year, the markings are so striking! The body of the piece has been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with Danish Oil, Sanding sealer, and wood wax, the inside has been finished with a food-safe oil so my biscuits are safe 😉. The lid is made from Hard Maple and the handle is the world's most expensive and gorgeous wood, Snakewood (a first time turning on the channel!). Both parts of the lid were sanded to 10000 grit and finished with Danish oil, Sanding sealer and wood wax.
The piece is approximately 23 x 12cm
Let me know what you think about this piece! It is available on my website link below.

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Beautiful wood, and a beautiful jar. About the accident, you were lucky. I was a bit careless on a table saw, and in a tenth of a second. I lost a middle finger, and the blade carved the joint on my index finger, so the surgeon operated it stiff. Pardon me if I don´t express myself correctly, I am not used to write in English. Greetings from Sweden!

Wood turning/ working is dangerous. I dropped an axe on my foot and ended up in A&E luckily no major damage or lost toes. But a message to everyone complacency is how we get hurt carelesnes and complacency is how we ended up having to leave this amazing hobby/ craft.

Stunning piece, made even better by the snakewood and the hobnobs! Glad your cut wasn't too serious. The worst I've been hurt in the shop (to date!) has been using a hand drill and the band saw. They're comfortable, friendly tools that make you drop your guard, unlike the noisy router and terrifying table saw.

By the burn marks on that roughed out wood, I'd say your band saw was blunt and possibly the reason for your little accident. Lovely end result though.

Hello my friend Harry! I am very sorry for the accident you had, but I think it was important that you show it in your video, as it reminds us that even the most experienced people have accidents too. I once broke my middle finger while turning wood. I almost lost the head of my finger, fortunately it was possible to save it, but it was a tremendous scare! As for the piece, it was absurdly beautiful. Congratulations! Big hug.

Instead of hollowing the wood inside through turning try to cut a log piece inside to the extent of making hollow so that you get a smaller piece to make another cup or jar..

Thanks for sharing harry, I generally like your videos. However you shouldn’t use a ( spindle) roughing gouge on cross grain work. During your turning of the lid, it was only for a few seconds though. At least I think that’s what I saw. Newbie turners can get wrong ideas from watching experienced turners. Otherwise a very good box, simple and elegant . I do hope that you used food safe finish though, there was no mention at all. I always enjoy your videos, keep them coming. Don’t mind me I’m the trainer at my local club and can’t help myself when I see dangerous stuff in videos.

I am curious; at about the 7:33 mark you are rubbing wood shavings on the piece while the lathe is turning. What is the purpose of this? I've seen other turners do it as well and haven't been able to decide what it accomplishes.

As a relatively experienced woodturner I was attracted by the title of the project 'The worlds most expensive wood' which I realise is a toss between Snakewood and Kingwood. As I watched the main body of the video I couldn't see anything that resembled these two woods. It was only at the end when he turned the knob that I could see it was Snakewood. I would have preferred the project if it had been described as 'Turning a lidded box with a Snakewood finial/knob'.

Not wood, but I was using a drill press and had chuck loosen up, and the 1/4 in thick aluminum went flying and tried to take my thumb off. Took 14 stitches, I highly don't recommend the process.

Why didn't you just slice off a piece of the original wood to make the lid. Would've been prettier considering the grain of the end product.
@jupiterlegrand4817
@jupiterlegrand4817 Год назад
Cutting that second piece at about 1:07 you (once again) almost took your right index finger off. You seriously do NOT know band saw safety (or just don't care). Hey...they're your hands, so be my guest, but JEEZ.
