Woodturning | Turning A Bowling Ball
I turned a bowling ball into a bowl! I was really surprised how well they turned. The only real issue I had was the core, which really wasn't a problem to turn it just smelled really bad. I found these at a garage sale for five bucks.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after RU-vid started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

This may only work if you have a "passive" ball. Those "active/reactive" ones like the red ball in the video have a heavy core with an off-center-mass. You would want to have this mass centered on your turning machine like Carl did by hoking the ball up at the axis indicator next to the holes. Else the ball could go flying through your workshop... So sometimes the placement may not be chooseable!

The item in the center is a weight block and they are made in different shapes and usually off centered to make the ball curve as it rolls down the lane. I dont know what they make the cores out of. Those were awesome bowls by the way. Great job finding something different to turn.

Yup, bowing ball technology has gotten crazy. The core shape, along with where the finger holes are drilled. And how the bowler rolls the ball, determines how much the ball will hook. www.thoughtco.com/bowling-ball-pins-explained-420727
@1BlackSheep
@1BlackSheep 5 лет назад
Yes they do that to help people like me with a nasty hook control it and in fact use it.
@horseshoe_nc

I'm left handed and did some bowling years ago. Being left handed can actually have an advantage in bowling. The main reason, lane condition break down doesn't happen as much. For those that don't know, oil is put on the lanes. And it is applied in very specific ways. Sometimes heavy in the middle of the lane and light near the edges. Sometimes heavy at the start of the lanes. This is called oil patterns. Well here is where it gets interesting. Every time a ball is rolled down the lane, some of the oil gets carried down lane by the ball. This reduces the grip the ball can get on the dry back end of the lane. In turn, reducing hook potential. Left handed bowlers don't have to worry about this quite as much and right handed bowlers. Simply because there are not as many lefties burning up the left side of the lanes. Now, on to the crazy core shapes of bowling balls. The idea is, the ball spins on one axis while in the oil. Then right as the ball comes out of the oil. The ball flips it's rotation axis, so it can better grip the dry back end of the lane and hook inwards towards the "pocket." The "pocket" is the area between the front pin and the one just behind and to the side. Just to the left of the front pin for left handed bowlers, and just to the right for right handed bowlers. The shape of the weight and where the finger holes are drilled in relation to that weight. That is what determines how easily or quickly the ball can revert back to it's natural rotation axis. The last ball I had, on standard League play oil pattern. I could roll the ball straight down the 5th board from the left gutter. It would get out of the oil and "flip" then hook and slam pretty much directly into the pocket. My issue was being consistent with ball speed, location and direction. Sorry for the long winded comment. Just thought I would share my experience and insight.

For someone that used to bowl with a 200 average and had my experience with many different kinds of bowling balls, I really dig this video. I like how you kept the logo and even the thumb hole. You were talking about the core of the bowling balls and each one is different and each surface on the outside is different to give you different results on different oil patterns. Sometimes the CG on bowling balls can be offset which is why some of the cores are smaller and bigger and not as symmetrical. I think what you did with this was very cool!

'All bowling balls are not created equal'. So that explains my yearly averages! lol Suggestions: 1. Keep the lid. 2. Put the holes at the bottom for a planter. 3. Keep the holes in the lid for a vase. 4. Could you use the holes at the bottom to make a stand out of the ball? Maybe you could use resin to make small round balls as feet or wood as legs. The comments about a yarn bowl were good! I still have all of my balls and I plan to make a water fountain feature from one of them using the holes. And I'll just use the others as decorations. I'm not a woodworker so I won't be making vases or anything but I think the bowls are a great idea. I love this video!! Thank you, Carl.

Not a professional bowler, but I have bowled for many years. As William Jones stated, the core you referred to is a weight (usually a resin based product) that affects how much the ball breaks as it rolls own the lane. It is placed at different places inside that ball in order to have it break into the pocket. Where it is placed in the ball, either more towards the center or to the outside controls the break. Placed more away from the center gives more of a hook or break. Pros most always throw a very large hook in order to hit the pocket (between the 1 & 3 pins). This most always will get you a strike. You are correct that the Hammer and the other are trade names of the bowling balls. Using masks etc. is a very good idea. Nicely done Carl. The finished product was beautiful.

Most of your bowling ball cores are a mix of resin and a concrete/ cement mix on your higher end balls.

I'd say this project was a STRIKE! Clearly you SPAREd no effort to make this PIN-terest worthy piece. Uh... something about lanes... uncomfortable shoes.... yeah, all out of puns.

Why can't people just stay in their LANE they're are so many TURKEYS in the comments sometimes, This video was was no SLEEPER & didn't cross the FOUL LINE if X MARKS the spot this would get 12 X's in a row and be a PERFECT GAME. I liked this video some of the angles & edits reminded me of the movie 300!

Question: why would I ever doubt it's a bowling ball.
@jasonmcleod8914

Because some might think you can't turn a real bowling ball and make a bowl.

Fantastic! I like working in acrylics and synthetics so I'll add a bowling ball to my idea list after serving this.
