I didn't realize that working with epoxy was as time consuming as it is. You are right. I have three times the effort in a wood and resin bowl. But, it is a piece of art and for me, turning is a hobby. That is a great looking bowl and you gave me a few good ideas.
I am sure that there are people out there that will like the colors of the bowls but they are not my cup of tea. You did a lot of work and I'm sure there are people who will buy them. Not to worry tho..we all know that you can't please everyone all the time. I hope you have a wonderful Easter.. Please stay safe and keep on turning.
The bowl is amazing. It is good to seee that you also make "mistakes" when pouring. The colors work well together and it really like the black ring around the bowl. It brinss it all together
They turned out way better than my initial thoughts, way cool, you have way more patience than I do! Great job! Oh and you can keep your snow and cold weather, thanks you very much!
Jim! This is one of your best videos and best outcomes to date on your resin journey 💫🎉💕🎊 Dont worry about it being long, it was thoroughly entertaining! Even if you did, uhhh, 🥺 screw up with the pressure pot! Thank you for sharing that part of your journey as well 😆 I absolutely LOVE this project! I like how the resin worked with you to create that third dimensional impact by bleeding into the wood. Amazing colour combo!
It was a really cool effect and I’m not sure if I will ever do one again, one of the goals of my channel it to teach others what not to do, hahaha. Thanks K
Wow they look amazing ,very clever technique with the spacer . i will be honest , both of them look good but the small bowl looks wicked wow . thanks for mentioning me and my channel .Cheers Ahron
This is so visually interesting, with the pattern and colors. Love it, great job. I like the slight staining fron the resin on the wood, it ties the black band together. Just spectacular 🎉
Thanks for.showing the pain and agony as well as the successes I watch these to see what to do as well as what not to do. You are an inspiration to all of us that love turning.
Brilliant. The depth effect adds mystery. It grabs your attention and you stare working out how in the heck it was done. Thats if your not a turner. 😊😊😊😊
Amazing! Both bowls are beautiful. My personal favorite is the small bowl. Thanks again Jim for sharing your amazing projects. ❤🙃 Yes, I was one of those screaming not to cast in the pressure pot. Hope your pot is still usable.
In terms of time and resin these bowls are priceless, but worth it. They are the best ever. Absolutely beautiful. So unusual. I follow Aaron Aficanmeat. He is wonderful too. Thanks for the videos Jim. I have learned so much from you. I love your work.
Wow Jim for a person like me that has no idea about wood turning that certainly is different, i have never ever seen anything like that before and im really glad you gave it a go you did a super job.
Nice idea, I prefer more classic styles but why not, it's nice to try new things! If you need to keep the pieces spaced evenly, maybe you should just go the extra mile to glue them on a base before pouring the epoxy. Also, glad to see your opinions on mistakes and possible routes, always entertaining AND educational. Keep growing!
This time you went way out of your usual way of doing bowls. I really like them. I was one that was thinking doing it in the pressure pot was so very wrong!! I'm glad it worked out and you got it out!!
Oh man, I feel for you. There is no worse feeling than having a part not release initially. For context, when we do tool prep in the aerospace world we have to get the part surfaces absolutely squeaky clean and then polished and then cleaned again. We don't take them to a mirror finish, but they are headed that way. All to deny the epoxy any chance of getting any kind of mechanical bond to the metal. Then the release agent (or agents) go on, usually two coats for a tool that is already coated, more like six for a new tool. I am so glad you didn't have to sacrifice the pressure pot. Also, hot damn those things look amazing. Beautiful work as always.
@@SpragueWoodturning If I had to guess, I think that paint saved your butt. If the epoxy had gotten ahold of the steel you could have hit that thing with a train and it wouldn't have popped. Wish I had some pictures of times where release agent has either fully or partially failed during an autoclave cure, an ~1/8 inch carbon fiber laminate will take a 1/4 inch steel plate and bend it like a Pringle.
Jim, I've been going through your back catalogue in a fairly random fashion (I must've watched 30 or so!) & I have to say this is by far my favourite! If I ever found myself in a postion to afford to commission a bowl set from you, this is EXACTLY the style I'd go for! We would need to talk about colours though!! 😀
I am fairly new to this channel. I can say that, so far, I have never seen you take on a more complicated project. I don’t know how you can imagine what it will look like when you are done. It was also very entertaining. Putting it out in the snow, putting it upside down on props - it was amusing what all you went through to get it loose. One of my favourite parts in your videos is watching you struggle to get it out of the mold. I also like seeing you covered in epoxy shavings. This was a huge project and I really enjoyed this video. Beautiful pieces once again. It was well worth the extra time you put into it.
Terrific video Jim, I don't normally go for resin but you did an excellent design with these bowls. Plus you something new every week. 'till next time, stay safe.
You said in the beginning might be too busy for some .. well not for me! These are absolutely beautiful! Wait that word does not fit got to replace it with stunning!!! I love wood and colored resin it's the only way to go in my opinion!
I love this look! I'm not personally a fan of this specific colour combo, but I would love to see this technique used with your Peacock colours! It would be great fun to see you exploring this technique in different ways should you wish to in the future. I think it would be interesting to see how more "precise" geometric cuts mapped out with a compass or something would look compared to the more relaxed freehand lines, though I don't know if that would look too rigid with this style. Maybe a piece of wood with a really defined knot or 2 to base the cuts around would be a fun project to experiment with! As always, stunning work 💜
Wow!! What salad bowls!! Strips of red and green bell pepper mixed among the lettuce would match the colors perfectly! Hmm,,,,,I think I’ll have a rasberry balsam vinegarette dressing with this salad please. Very innovative although I think I see more gray in the whiskers after this episode.😤🤣😂🤠 Very well done!!!
You had me rolling on the floors, laughing like a fool when you weren’t able to get the bowl out of the pressure pot! This turned out to be sooooo cool and I love that they are a set! The colors are fantastic together! Beautiful piece! Great job! Bravo!
Great result after that frustrating pressure pot boondoggle... I cringed when I realized what you planned to do ... very glad you finally got the piece out of there!
Very different. I know a lot of comments about people liking it but I’m not a fan of the modern look, but that’s just me. I think the red was too wide and red is my favorite. I can’t believe you poured the resin in the pot LOL. You are one of my favorite turners. Stay safe and keep warm. God bless 👍
I love the colors, as you say personal taste, but I think if this was done again with earth tone type colors you would end up with something that looked like a rock with loads of intrusions pushed through through it, which would be a touch more subdued and also beautiful. And the resin pushing into the wood would look fantastic with those colors as well.
Another beautiful piece, Jim. I follow Ahron. Not only is he a fabulous wood turner, he is a very clever engineer. Ray Whitby also does some very interesting work with resin so it’s worth checking him out. I am in the process of buying a pressure pot so should start casting in the next couple of weeks 🌞. Stay safe and regards to you and your family.
They're absolutely amazing! Gorgeous and the colors just pop. It looks like a multiple lightning strikes have hit the wood and the newest is that gorgeous red. Just a beautiful 2 piece set.
FANTASTIC, WOW, this is very unique and quite a ton of work. It looks so smooth as if the finish was epoxy and not WFSBF. One of the cooler pieces I’ve seen. The yellow really glows. The red portion looks like an aneurism, not that that’s bad, it gives it character. Love it.
One day, I hope to get a pressure pot and try resin. Great trial and error instruction, thanks. I make my own carbide turning tools on round bar. Great for sheering, because you can angle your cuts. My favorite is my 18mm round cutter on 5/8 round bar. Wish I could attach a picture. Love your videos.
Even though the resin and the turning grimlins were after you on this bowl you did a great job I really like how you cut it and put the resin in it keep on turning great pieces. James
Greetings from Belleville Ontario, The only good thing about lock downs and travel restrictions we all are dealing with through these times is that I am getting more involved in turning. I find your videos are inspiring and very entertaining (better than cable) ... I would like to start trying casting resin soon. Thanks for the links. that casting pot is a little on the high end for me. Absolutely beautiful bowl
Jim, I just happened across your channel and have to say I am impressed with the way you share the good and the bad. Very informative. I have not cast anything yet; just got my first pot is I kinda cringed when you poured directly in the pot. The two bowls look great. I also really appreciate the links you have provided to the various products you are using, very helpful. A fellow Ottawa Valley inhabitant.
