Woodworking: Lathe Tool Sharpening On Sander

I recently purchased a newer lathe and needed a way to sharpen my lathe tools. After pricing a couple of commercially available sharpening systems, I was frightened away by the high prices, and decided to build my own. I converted the stationary sander that I already have, and it works great. Filmed on the iPhone 10 with the iPhone camera stand. Logo design by Brandon Kettle. Thank you Ron! I have been using this to sharpen my lathe chisels for several months now, and it has really worked well. With a steady hand, and holding the chisel in the correct orientation, you can really get a good sharp edge on them. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!

U just did that yesterday on a belt sander. Mine us simpler yet but sharpened my gouge just fine .

These belt sander systems work even better if you put a twist in the drive belt, so the sander runs away from the cutting edge. You may need a longer belt, or to move the motor a bit closer.

I'm doing something like this. It's only a cheap sander and the cheapest belts I could buy but they still dress HSS just fine. The only thin I would say ... you are using it like a wheel. I would suggest that you do this with the belt running away from you cuz your set up is reverse of normal sanding?? If if so happens the belt gets damaged and grabs the tool there are going to be tears? This will make a burr ... but you can take that off in seconds with 1200 worn our emery or a bit of hide?

@@thetennesseetinkerer Cheers buddy and thanks. Like you I am looking to avoid spending more on sharpening kit than the lathe! Amateur engineer as well so a quick dressing of a tool just to bring it back .. these belts work fine. But away from your self or that tool will be heading straight pronto aimed at the tackle? The other thing I like is the faces are ground flat, not hollow ground (all wheels hollow grind), even bowl or spindle gouges. It's fairly easy to make a jig to create the wings, if you want them. Just need to take the burr off the flute. I wish you all the best and thanks again.

What grit of sandpaper are you using?

Pat, I've been using 120 grit. It works great for putting the edge back on. Thanks for the comment and view.

NOT knocking the video content or production values, but one does not learn how to sharpen lathe chisels using jigs - store bought or homemade. One learns only how to use jigs. All my edged tools are sharpened by hand (without jigs). I get the same results as when using a jig, but in half the time and, usually, with a better edge. Granted, I've been doing it since I was a teenager in the 1960's, but it is neither black magic or difficult to learn. Most turners can learn how to do it in the time it takes to set up one of those fancy jig systems to grind on one chisel. Tools needed in any combination: • Wet stones • Oil stones • Leather strop & buffing compound • Belt sander • Disc sander

Mike, first of all, thanks for the view and the comment. I'm sure the quality of your sharpening is way better than mine. I don't claim to be an expert wood turner or tool sharpener. In fact, while I have been a woodworker for over 30 years, I haven't been turning for very long. I'm the kind of guy that enjoys recreating something on my own that functions like a store bought item, yet at a fraction of the price. Hence this sharpening system. It has served me well so far, and I suspect that there are many others with similar setups that are using them to great success. I always like to collect new skills though, and one day I may learn the wet stone sharpening method. Anyway, thanks again.
