Woodworking Paulownia Wood 2020: Woodworking Grain Problem
Hello. I'm Stephen Ondich. You may remember me from such Internet classics as:
Paulownia Wood 2019: • Paulownia Wood 2023
Paulownia Wood 🌳 • Paulownia wood 🌳
and
Paulownia Wood vs Swamp Ash • Guitar - Paulownia Woo...
Empresswood has many desirable qualities for both wood carving and guitar wood luthiery. It is lightweight, has beautiful pronounced grain and grows sustain-ably at a rapid pace. This is why respected instrument companies like Fender Guitars (FDMC) and Mario Guitars use it for guitar body wood.
However, Paulownia has some challenging characteristics, as well. Kiri grain, while beautiful, is often irregular.
Thus, while a wild-grain stand-alone Paulownia board is desirable for custom woodworking projects, matching grain can be tough.
We milled approximately 50 Paulowia guitar blanks for luthiery applications. The blanks measured 1.80:" x 15" x 20". All were glued up in two equal staves at 7.5" widths.
Typically, we use a slip match process for producing body blanks made from two staves with similar color and grain pattern.
Woodworkers definitions of Slip Match, Book Match and Random Match can be found on the Oakwood Veneer site here: www.oakwoodven...
Most of the time slip matching two cuts of guitar tonewood for center-glued body blank works well. Presumably, two slip matched cuts from one piece wood look like each other.
However, Empresswood grain is unusually wild and erratic. Many boards have significant grain pattern shifts over the run of the board. This can cause grain tearing especially when woodturning because the blades constantly hit different grain directions. Classical guitar making luthiers have to match these wild grain patterns. Accordingly, traditional attempts to slip match guitar body blanks may yield inconsistent results.
The paulownia guitar body blank that I found during a random test search showed this issue. Basically, two staves that should have been a good match for each other but were not.
As a result, anyone doing Woodworking, Wood Carving, furniture making, classical guitar making, or modern luthiery should take special care when attempting to match Empresswood grain patterns together. With this particular wood, the best visual matches may be from different areas of the Paulownia tree rather than adjoining!

This was my first vid since I subbed your channel. What you do has nothing to do with what I do in life but that’s what makes You Tube interesting because we can learn about things I would not have known. Thanks for sharing.

Did you log hardwoods? Regardless, logging is hard work (can be dangerous, too!)

Commercial Forest we have different species of pine trees to raise for lumber or to sell the pine straw. Any hardwoods are taken to the local pulp mills.

Walsh Farms The pulpwood market in Maine is pretty weak right now. Is it OK in your neck of the woods?

Looks like the problem is with the milling. Attention wasn't paid to how the log was milled with regards to what it would be used for. the boards in question look as though they are from a butt log or from the part of a log with a fork or a sweep. I plan on growing Paulownia to use for moulding, shelving and lightweight furniture. From what I've seen I believe it can replace Pine and some hardwoods for most of what those woods are used for. Thanks for the video. It keeps Paulownia at the front of my mind.

Hi Paula. Thanks! Hope your 2020 is off to a great start. Have any new destinations coming up?

Commercial Forest - my 2020 is going great! Thank you f9r asking. Heading back to the Mine on Tuesday for my first rotation of 2020. I do have a BIG road trip coming up in July 2020: Calgary to Tuktoyaktuk via the Dempster Highway (will announce it soon). This will be a boondocking, roof-top tenting, overlanding adventure. This will be my second time on the Dempster. I started it back in 2016, but wasn’t able to reach my destination (Inuvik) because of the floods. This is a bucket-list item that needs to be concluded. 🤪 How about yourself? How’s your 2020 coming along?

Paula - the Canadian Explorer that sounds so cool. I can’t wait for that one. We live in California but have a house we are renovating and a forest we’re managing in Downeast Maine. Our only definitive travel plans are to go to Maine late spring. I’m kind of excited about that, I have to admit! If you’re ever in Washington County and want a place to camp, feel free to stay on our forest land.

Commercial Forest - that is cool! Are you flying or driving across the country? If driving, that should be quite an adventure. Thanks for the invite. I’ll go Eastern Canada most probably in 2021 or 2022. Thanks for the offer - that is sweet. Stay safe. 🌷🌸🌼🌺🌹

@@CommercialForest lol.. I'm not a skilled wood worker either... I can build structures, but when it comes to fancy stuff 🤣😂 I've done it, but you know, it's so much easier to work with metal.. if you cut wrong, or good somewhere.. welder and grinder, no one would ever know 😎😁

Is it possible that these blanks were made from logs milled from a stand of trees that were not properly planted, pruned, or forested as lumber? The knots on those boards seem pretty large for trees planted 4 meters apart whose lower limbs are all removed systematically while still small, which in my understanding is the proper way to farm Paulownia.
@CommercialForest

Definitely possible.

Mike The Maker sounds good. It’s a really interesting wood. It’s the only Wood I know of that has a very pronounced grain but is super lightweight. All the other lightweight hard woods - basswood, balsa, etc. have no real grain.

Can you use a chisel on it? I am actually making parts of a pipe organ with p. and its impossible to obtain an acceptable result. Sanding ok, power saws ok, but chisel, no way.

How's she goin'? So does this mismatch 'slip match' cause sound issues for a guitar or is it only a visual concern? Thanks for posting and for the explanation!!!
@CommercialForest
@CommercialForest 4 года назад
Hi Mike! How are things in Nova Scotia? The grain match is purely a visual issue. However, when ithe guitar body is finished with a natural clear coat, any color or grain mis-match is emphasized. Thanks for watching.
@ChrisFranklyn

I guess if the grain offended someone too much it could be used as a painted body instead :)
@CommercialForest
@CommercialForest 4 года назад
Chris Franklyn this is true. However, I should point out that no one has actually complained about this to us. it was just something I noticed as it was being glued up. I thought someone was asleep at the wheel but the guys showed me what the issues are. Lumber boards are very uniform from top to bottom but Paulownia is often not like that
