I have been doing scroll saw work for over thirty years. A little over two years ago I purchased the EX 30 scroll saw like the one pictured but I have a thirty inch throat. It is the best saw I have ever owned by far. In the past a scroll saw would last me about a year and a half to two years and then something would break and on cheaper saws you cant find replacement parts. Not the case with an Excalibur saw. It is excellent. I have had no problems with it, but if I were to I can get replacement parts. Keep Scrolling, its great.
@DaniLong
@DaniLong 6 лет назад
The depth of the throat of the scroll saw determines the size of wood you can cut. 12" throat = board < 12". 30" throat = boards up to 30".

Congrats on the interest in the scroll saw. It CAN be addicting. When choosing a saw, take in mind how often you plan to use it. If a daily user, then go with a high end saw like Hegner (I have a Hegner), Dewalt 788 or Excalibur. The Hegner and Excalibur are over $1000 for a large one. Most scroll saws (for occasional use) are much much less expensive.

@ryanathan2 No, a scroll saw is not a substitute for a bandsaw. One way to look at it is that the smallest thing you might cut on a bandsaw is the biggest thing you could cut on a scroll saw. They are two distinctly different machines.

I have loved using a scroll saw for years. In fact, I would wear out a lower priced saw within a couple of years. I purchased the thirty inch Excalibur saw and I will never have to replace it because if a part wears out or breaks, you can just replace it, not like on the lower priced saws.

Check with your particular scroll saw's manufacturer. Different saws have different quirks. Many times you will also find videos on youtube for fixes on them. I've been scroll sawing for 16 years and have used all kinds of saws. Make sure the tension is set tight enough...but not so tight you keep breaking blades. When cutting...let the blade do the cutting.

You made mention of the difficulty sanding when doing intricate pierce-cutting... What of mounting some sort of abrasive rope or line (in place of the blade) to do such sanding? Maybe something very thin, like heavy fishing line, but with a grit surface? Just an idea that came to mind while watching.

@jamesmoore3346
@jamesmoore3346 5 лет назад
Blade breakage usually is a result of over tensioning the blade. You want the blade just tight enough to produce a light 'twang' like on a guitar string if you pluck it with your finger, practice, it just takes a little time.

@luchism6283
@luchism6283 6 лет назад
You make it look soooo easy :-) I have a Delta Workmaster scroll saw and it is a bear to get pinless blades to stay in the clamps. Do you have any suggestions? Also how much tension should the blade have? My blades seem to wander and I think its due to not enough tension but when I try to make them tighter they pull out of the clamps. The clamps are sort of a clamshell arrangement with a cam leaver to tighten them. Are after market clamps available? When I try to tension the blade I pull it out of the clamp. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've had this saw for 10+ years but haven't cut more than about 3 feet of wood because of the clamps.

do you have enough tension on the blade? When the tension is right, you should be able to "Pluck" the blade and hear a kind of high note. If you don't, increase the tension on the blade. When cutting wood over 1/2" don't expect the saw to cut as easily as cutting 1/4" thick wood. The thicker the wood, the slower the feed into the blade, and more difficult for the saw to cut.
@kdwyermedia
@kdwyermedia 12 лет назад
@ryanathan2 hi, depends on the saw. Used to have something called a Diamond fret saw which was unique. Notice he has a cut on his finger which is odd. For a machine powerful enough to weigh against a bandsaw you'd need a Hegner. Thing about a fret saw is that they cut on the downstroke and pull up so it's near impossible to even cut yourself. A bandsaw will pull your fingers in and slice them off with the momentum. kev.

The excalibur is a finer machine than the DW 788 hands down. Excalibur is much more feature rich and intuitive. Case in point if you are doing fretwork the excalibur saw will hold the saw arm upright for as long as you need hands free. The dw788 needs a separate solution for holding up the saw arm. Excalibur is also almost vibration free due to its heavy table and solid construction. Built like a tank...enough said.

I am a brand new, never made anything, scroll sawer ( I know that's not a word). I have tried making 45 or 90 degree turns and i break the blade or it turns in the cut. The blade gets jammed up in the wood. You made it look so easy. What tips can you give me to help? Size blade or type and thickness of wood? Speed I should be going? I feel like a complete failure. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 5 лет назад
Hi Linda, Making tight turns is easier in thin, soft wood using a smaller blade. I'd suggest working with some thin pine or 1/4" plywood to get the feel for your machine, then increase in thickness as you gain confidence and skill. Try to not get discouraged; you have a lot of fun and satisfaction ahead of you if you can practice patience and let yourself make some goofs at first. Hang in there and best of luck! Hi, David. Thank you for your question. Can you provide a little more detail about what you are experiencing? is the blade flexing? Is it shifting so that you have to make constant adjustments to track to a line? Is the problem happening consistently on hard/soft, and thick/thin woods? Is the problem new or has the saw always done this? Do you have experience on other scroll saws, and this one is exhibiting behavior that other saws have not? A picture(good) or video (better) might help if you are able to provide one.
@jamesmoore3346
@jamesmoore3346 5 лет назад
David, its not your saw. It is the design of the blade when it is manufactured. They stamp the blades and that will leave a burr to one edge of the blade causing the angled cutting. One way to avoid this is use a higher quality blade such as a precision milled blade, little more expensive but well worth it as they cut straight and stay sharp much longer than the inexpensive blades. Pegas and Flying Dutchmen make some of the finest blades available. Give em a try, you'll be glad you did.....

Hello, I bought a used Craftsman 30 inch industrial scroll saw, cast iron, heavy duty. The blades keep breaking on me. I've tried everything, better blades, adjusting the tension, etc.. I'm thinking that I got a dud. Also, the tubing is old and broken so the blower isn't hooked up. That alone wouldn't be my problem would it? I'm getting ready to give the thing away and buy a new one. I need the larger size for the cuts I need to make, using large pieces of wood. The wood I use is 3/4 pine.

@Wwgoa

Hello. I would avoid the $100 category if you can help it as these machines generally have so much vibration that it makes it hard to do quality work. I like this as a middle of the road offering: amzn.to/2QJ9E9G. For a bit more you could own one of these: amzn.to/2FMWbv9 The DeWalt is the one that I own, and I really enjoy using it. I was able to find mine used on Craigslist. I would check there first because there are often a lot of scroll saws available. If you can't find one used, it still might be worth getting one new if you plan on doing much scroll work because the difference between this and a $100 saw is dramatic. Hello, It depends how hard the wood is, which saw you are using, and the blade. In general you can make reasonably tight turns on any thickness of material, but thicker woods you will have to take it a bit more easy. Hope this helps, Paul Woodworkers Guild of America Video Membership
