Woodworking Tips: Finishing - One of the problems with using water-based stains and finishes is that they tend to raise the grain on the wood surface, leaving it rough. George Vondriska shows a great way to avoid raising the grain by de-whiskering your wood before staining or finishing.

2020 here. Is this still a good practice? Is this the same effect as applying Sanding Sealer?

Ok. I want to apply grain filler on oak cabinets. Should I sand the surface, wet it down and then apply filler? Or wet it down, sand, apply primer then apply filler?

Can I go straight to the de-whispering process, or do I need to sand first, then de-whisker, then sand again?

seems like this is low cost (well free) alternative to sanding sealer? would you use the same technique on plywood, specifically teak face ply?

What if I'm using an oil-based stain? Does that make a difference, or same procedure?

Hello. Oil based stain doesn't raise the grain on wood, so no special procedure is necessary. Thanks Paul-Woodworkers Guild of America

Ok I was hoping not cuz I never have lol. I’ve always leaned toward oil based paint and finishes. Not sure why

I use a heat gun to dry the wood rapidly, which keeps the whiskers from dropping back down again .. and sand with the 320 sandpaper. Then I repeat the de-whiskering all over again, using 000 steel wool the second time. I may even repeat once again with 0000 steel wool.

This step would only be suggested before applying water based finishes, as those finishes will raise the grain if it hasn't been raised already.
