I like to make my money go as far as possible. I knew I wanted a lathe and kept my eyes open. I picked up this Record DML 24 lathe via Gumtree for £100. I didn't "need" it at the time, but it was a very reasonable price so I picked it up.
Fast forward six months or so and it's now set up and ready to go! I took a day of tuition with a wood turner www.beechtreedesigns.co.uk/. Sandra was able to show me the ropes and lessen the anxiety of shoving a chisel into a spinning piece of wood.
This weekend I took the time to try the skew. This wasn't a tool we covered during my training, but I was eager to give it a try. I was nervous as the skew has a reputation! Although my practice piece isn't great I really got a feel for the versatility of the skew and just how clean you can get the surfaces.
The lack of noise and the extra dimension a lathe can bring to your woodworking means it's ideally suited to the home workshop. If your budget is tight, try my approach of just keeping an eye out in local classifieds, Facebook marketplace etc.
You don't need many tools and I actually just sharpened my skew on the fine side of my Norton India.
That aside I'm working on a Mini Mule chest in cherry. There's no rush with it, it'll be done when it's done!
Hopefully I can share my Dovetail method with you. Because the internet needs another Dovetail article, right? 😂.

Dude, I really like your down to earth style. You build whatever you want, and I'll watch!

Hi Joe. Thank you! It's pretty slow going thanks to time constraints (something that most of us can relate to) but I'll have something to watch at some point 😂

It a lot of fun turning isint it? I do all wood work except felling trees. I do chainsaw milling, flat work, and round work, the skew is still a little tricky but I have mastered all the other tools for the lathe. Love it all, but I love turning the most. Making bowls and vases is a lot of fun. Working on a turned manual gear shifting knob for a friend. I added a toggle lever to it for an engine start button hidden inside of it. I looked on the internet a bunch and haven't seen another gear shift knob with a hidden toggle swith like the one I am making. Still working on another project that nobody has ever seen or done before👍

Hey Chris! Sounds like you have lots of experience there. The shift knob sounds very interesting, not something I'd ever contemplated. I can imagine turning can become very rewarding as the work has the potential to grow quickly right before your eyes.

Ya gotta start somewhere. Right? You'll get it after loads of practice. Practice makes perfect. I cant wait to get a lathe.

Absolutely, grab some time and have a go. Having a lesson with someone was certainly very useful.

I don't know much about turning but for me rounded gouges are my bread and butter turning tools. Tools that looks like chisels with just a beveled end and sharp corners are less useful. I have a turning job I need to get around to doing. Maybe tomorrow? I've made the couple of tools I have out of old files.

Hi! I'm really grateful for that lathe, it's heavy and solid, now it's up to me to get the best from it. I will happily share me using the lathe. But for now there are many skilled turners out there I'm picking up tips from 👍
