Woody Allen at Cannes Film Festival Press conference for "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger"
Alfie and Helena divorce. Helena begins seeing a fortune teller, Cristal, for spiritual advice. Their daughter Sally has a troubled marriage with author Roy, who once wrote a successful book and is now anxiously waiting for a response from his publisher about the manuscript of his newest one. Helena helps pay their rent.
Alfie marries a prostitute, Charmaine. Roy falls for Dia, a musicologist he sees through a window near his and Sally's flat, who is engaged to another man. Sally considers having an affair with Greg, her new boss at an art gallery. Greg confesses he is having trouble at home and eventually it turns out he is having an affair with Iris, Sally's protégée. Helena begins a friendship with Jonathan, the proprietor of an occult bookshop, which develops into romance.
Roy's book is rejected. He hears that Henry, a friend who is also a writer, has died in an accident. Henry had just finished a brilliant manuscript he had shown only to Roy, and Roy decides to steal it and claim it as his work. It is well received. After a string of lunch dates with Dia, he convinces her to break off her engagement (much to the devastation of her fiancé and their families) and moves in with her.
Alfie gets into a fight with Charmaine over her high expenses. He asks Helena to make a new start with him, but she refuses. Charmaine has sex with another man and gets pregnant. Alfie wants a DNA test to discover whether he is the father, but Charmaine argues that his paternity is irrelevant.
Sally quits her job and asks Helena for a loan she promised, for setting up her own art gallery, but Helena refuses because according to Cristal it is astrologically a bad time. Sally is furious. Roy is informed that there was a mix-up of the people killed in the accident and is shocked to hear that Henry is actually in a coma and recovering.
In the end, all are dissatisfied with their choices, except for Helena. She has acquired from Cristal a belief in reincarnation and sees her life now as only one episode in her series of lives. Jonathan shares her beliefs, and they receive his deceased wife's blessing for the new relationship via a séance.

I like how people in the audience intially started laughing expecting Allen to make a joke only to shift increasingly into shocked silence when confronted by his very blunt, rational honesty about existence.

Remember Woody searching for the meaning of life in “ Hannah and her Sisters” and concluding for a period the Nietzsche viewpoint that “Life is Meaningless.” I believed down deep he feels that way, but wants to stick around as long as possible, considering the alternative.🎬❤️🎬

Woody doesn't give examples. I know he fears death but come on there are so many other painful things in life. Being picked last for basketball, pimples, finding out you have a learning disability and can't do the work you want, knowing for sure there is no god, realizing that others have delusions you can't grab for yourself.

You make it seem like pain or joy is something imaginary: it can be argued that joy is essentially negative (absence or fullfillment of a want or need) but pain is very real and it cannot be argued or willed away. This is why Woody Allen's view is entirely correct. The mere fact that we have a nervous system clearly shows pain isn't a concept but a biological and psychological sensation and very real, unless you think your body and mind are illusions too. Which would prove mr. Woody right ;).

I'm actually saying the situation isn't really relative at all. I'm saying is it wise to condemn a relationship that, although it began in a questionable, unorthodox way, blossomed in a decades-long, ongoing marriage? I don't think it is. Most married couples never achieve that.

For most people, Woody Allen is correct about this, but he's had a pretty good life, overall. If he made any serious mistakes that caused problems, he's at fault, but it didn't have to happen with the money and resources he's got. No sympathy for the rich and famous.

I don't have beliefs, I'm not accomplishing anything in particular, I have no life goals to speak of. It's just that in reality, each moment I spend awake, I enjoy. I don't think I'm choosing to enjoy anything, I just intrinsically do. Life is a blast. So I literally don't quite understand what people like Schopenhauer etc are talking about. I absolutely love most of Woody Allen's movies. He is hands down one of my favorites. Now, that being said, the truth is that his philosophy of living that he puts forth here is nothing but a crock of dog doo. I don't care if O'Neil (whom I happen to also love as a writer), and Nietzsche, and Freud (whom I have no respect for; his theories on mental health are crap.) agree with Woody Allen. That doesn't make Woody Allen correct. (I'm running out of words; I will post another one.)
