This old survivor remembers when cotton was called the "death fabric" . After all these years of synthetics and fabric blends , wool still reigns supreme . Excellent video Mad Dog .
Yep I definitely agree! I can remember being told.... cotton in the hills kills etc.... for camping etc I still think wool takes some beating! Have a great weekend brother 👍🏽👍🏽😎
I lucked out and picked up 3 at yard sales last year.. one is tactical purple but that does not matter. Thank you for the care tips.. I keep a vintage heavy duty wool blanket in the Jeep for emergencies. Thank you for the terrific information, Andy
My father in law got a wool horse blanket about 20 years ago. It's the warmest & thickest wool blanket I've experienced. I use a wool blanket year round. I love them so much. Nice video, cheers!
Thanks Sir. I'm ashamed to say I don't own a wool blanket but have often thought I need some. (best part is every question that came to mind as you spoke you answered it for me.) Thanks so much
That is an outstanding tip my friend. And I too have experienced the grey blankets of the MOD, not exactly Merino wool, but practical. Wool is the way to go.
Wool blanket and waxed cotton tarp from grandads car kit and I'd sleep outside instead of going home as a kid, still do similar nowadays using a waxed cotton drop sheet.
Thanks for the idea about getting them vintage I'll be bae I've been looking at what blanket for a long time wanting one but I can't afford it but didn't think about it getting a used one I don't mind used thank you brother
What great assortment of wool blankets. I really like using them too. I have one I use on my bed each night. That was a great tip on cleaning them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us brother 🇺🇸🇬🇧🏴🍻🔥
Good tip 👍 I get my wool blankets from charity shops . been looking today for blankets and I could only find tactical pink .I don't mind other colours put not that 😁👍
Tactical pink 🤔 🤣 like the SAS jeeps in North Africa "dusky pink" Old coffee/tea stain wool pretty good, amount of times I had to vacuum talcum powder out of the cream wool carpet at me ol' grandparents living room.
Ron from Indiana, great video. In the day dear hunting clothes were made of wool. Some still are, nice collection of warm blankets.Think I will start getting a few myself.👍🇺🇲🇬🇧
Hey , Nice video , didn't learn much. But I agree on keeping them and getting them. I have some really nice ones , and some I got dirt cheap. I always take a polyester blanket a wool blanket and a set of sheets for my cot. it's a rare day I ever get cold. My wool blanket is usually never used ,it's flipped off the poloy . Cot's the only way after 60. There's comforters on Amazon for $29.00 queen 100 % poly . I 've bought like 7 I got mostly extra long twin . Warm !!! and soft , very soft . ! I think polyester and wool combined is the way. Peace.
Thanks! After 60! I’m 47 and needing it! lol…. Modern materials are absolutely brilliant but I still think old natural materials are best! Just my opinion… modern polyester doesn’t protect you from the rain or protect you from the sparks emitted from a camp fire! But insulation…. Layers considered… probably a draw?… each to their own I guess! Best wishes buddy 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Yeah, a big fan of the ex military wool blankets. I like the brown version although I've gone all posh with the officers version from New Zealand. One thing I have noticed is they do molt a bit, which can have you looking fluffy yourself. But, on the whole they don't cost much as you say. I think I paid £8 from an army surplus. Convenient and warm!
Yep agreed brother! But I would honestly say try a vintage wool blanket for the same price!!!! .... much larger and more comfortable!! And keep you warmer and dryer for the similar price! .. just my opinion mate! ... very best wishes friend hope your having a great weekend 👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽😎
I love my wool blankets, I have 4 NVA ones and a scatter of various other ones, I wash them with woolite and I add a bit if babyoil into the wash too, I was told it puts an extra bit of waterproofing on them, doesn't seem to be causing them any harm anyway😁
Exactly!! I totally agree!! Don’t forget wool blankets have a natural life of around 90 years ish ! ..... so how long do we use/need them for?? ..... your comments are totally valid and I appreciate your support my friend! Very best wishes 👍🏽👍🏽😎
I put my wool blanket in the washing machine on a very hot cycle, then put it in the dryer to really dry it hot...to basically felt it...it came up beautifully and was no fuss or hard work... I use it in my hammock...under the actual hammock, between the hammock and the under insulation...
100% wool?? Surly it would shrink? If it works for you that’s good. I personally wouldn’t recommend it to my viewers as a general thing to do, as neither does the manufacturers of the 100% wool blankets. Best wishes
@@MadDogSurvival hoping that it would shrink a bit was part of the point...another being that if I get it filthy outdoors I can wash it easily without fuss because it won't shrink any more... Not that I noticed any obvious shrinkage at all...😊
Yes my friend from across the pond, wool is the way to go. When I was much younger say 40 years ago, I purchased myself a few 2,4 and 8 point Hudson Bay blankets when I was doing mountain man reenacting. I still have those blankets to this day and use them during the winter months. My Missus though isn't too keen on them. She says they're too coarse and common. And then I replied well why did you marry me then? Take care my English brother, waiting for your next vid to pop up.🇬🇧🇺🇸👍😁
Great idea using shampoo to clean wool! I am thinking that a good horse shampoo and conditioner would be a good choice as well. I am going to try that. Thanks!!
Good stuff Bro, Annie AKA pink prepper loves her military blanket she keeps it on her bed lol Disappointed you didn’t have them in a bedblock 😂😂🤣 You are right the price can be through the roof too, I have a few and some surplus shops including military Mart sometimes do some great deals. Plus tartan wool blankets from the Edinburgh woollen mill you can find cheap in second hand shops etc. Always keep one in the car for the kids too. Lots of uses, still fancy making a wool blanket smock one day! Good tip ref cleaning, it’s exactly how I clean ours Luke warm water and baby shampoo!! You know you can make your own bedroll by putting them inside a duvet cover 😉 Keep up the good work Enjoy the weekend Stay safe ATB Del 👍🔥🐺
Excellent! ..... please say hello to pink prepper for me my friend!!! 😁👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽......... absolutely agree with your comments! Can’t really endorse the wool blanket anymore than has always been so I guess it’s up to the people to try and use!! ..... hope your all well my friend! Have a great weekend brother and I wish you and pinky!... the very best 🙏🏼😁👍🏽👍🏽❤️👌🏽👌🏽🇬🇧🇬🇧
You ain't lying brother, shit there just expensive here as well. Definitely think they are a good thing to have a stock up on very warm. Ever since I got my wool pants and coat I don't ever want to go back.
Great! Glad you liked it my friend! Yep definitely agree! Wool blankets are the way forward! Best wishes friend! Glad you liked my videos brother 👍🏽👍🏽😎👌🏽
Ordinary hair shampoos do not dissolve well in cold water. And for wool cold water is optimal. There are detergents for wool, they are not cheap and not easily available in the UK. I personally use Australian Merino Wool Wash by Tantech Pty, which I bought probably on Amazon
Use a lanolin based wash to add peg-75 (not much) to the hand wash -steep like a tea bag -- drain only and line dry NEVER use a clothes dryer or dry clean.
Off the back of this video I bought a vintage double bed 100% wool blanket and have now made a (rough) bushcraft smock/ hoodie. Thanks to you. Now want to know what to do with the left over wool blanket.
Mad Dog Survival I have to be happy with it. I made it. Unfortunately it’s all hand sewn and the last time I sewed anything was a hand puppet at school, I need a sewing machine really.
Ahhhh mate..... you’re going to love that forever!!!! Please take the time to reinforce it.... make it strong and it’ll serve you for years!! Excellent! I’m glad I’ve been guilty for inspiring you to do this!! Hopefully it will make you smile! Very best wishes friend 👍🏽👍🏽😁👌🏽😎😉🍻
Absolutely excellent!!! Please send me a link to your video making it!!!! If you haven’t got one.... please keep me in mind next time!!! Very best wishes brother!! 👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽😎🍻
I believe there are several equivalents, man made fibres like the lionbrand materials. Also people who think they are allergic to wool sometimes actually aren’t! Try a quality merino wool that is less itchy on the skin before assuming a allergy. Hope this helps. Best wishes friend 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Yep I have used only a wool blanket before, until end of autumn/early winter over here in the uk, so down to around 0 degrees, of course it all depends on how you are clothed! I also spent a few nights out in only a heavy wool overcoat in winter as a young man! A completely miserable experience! These days being old and unfit I have a lightweight bag and blanket combination for most of the year and in winter I use a heavier bag and more base layers too ! Hope this helps! Best wishes mate 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Honestly…. No, not that I’ve noticed anyway ! The only thing for me personally is I like the fact that 100 percent wool is more fire resistant and water repellent. Which around a campfire are useful properties lol… hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting. Best wishes mate 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Good vid dude but do you think you’ve become a wool hoarder and one day you’ll be on the tv on one of them programs where you’ll have a house full of um and your livin in the kitchen 😂🤪
Yep..... definitely !! .... I think that I’ll be eventually revealed as a compulsive collector of.... anything outdoors.. related and military wears! From the era!! ...and anything related to enjoying the outdoors!
Hi pal great vid dont think you missed nowt ha ha just i counld not help but notice on your set up in the vid is that a dutch army waterproof bergan cover nfp if so were did u get it from cheers keep the vids coming.
Thanks brother! Yep well spotted! I think I was gifted the cover years ago by a old friend so I can’t give you a place of acquisition. Sorry mate! Thanks for watching! Hope your well and having a great weekend 👍🏽👍🏽😎 best wishes
Not the case bro!! Flu viruses can’t live more than 24 hours in material with a open/lose weave! Your flu was definitely contracted in other ways! I used wool blankets in the military for years also and they never gave us the flu! Sorry mate disagreeing this time! Best wishes friend 👍🏽👍🏽😎
Yep definitely agree! However I was just trying to show a cheaper addition to the sleep system without going into your clothing! Over here we pay a premium for wool clothing so doesn’t make it a cheap option! .... but like I said I definitely agree! If you can afford it! Best wishes brother 👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽😎
Absolutely none needed!!!!!! ... I honestly love any comments!.. In agreement or against!!! I honestly and truly appreciate any points of view! .... that makes democracy works for me! ... and we can all learn from any and each other! .... so again absolutely no worries brother! I appreciate your time to reply! I respect all my viewers! Very best wishes friend 👌🏽😎👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🙏🏼
