"Germany is a captive of Russia," President Trump said at a breakfast hosted by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. The president was in Brussels, Belgium for the start of the annual NATO summit. He made remarks critical of Germany for an energy agreement it made with Russia, and said Germany's contribution to NATO was insufficient relative to what the U.S. paid into the 29-member military alliance.

The wars in Israel and Ukraine are perpetuated by overt and or tacit US support. If the US pulls the plug on funding, the gravy train ride ends, and countries have to deal with the reality of multipolarity and the real power and threats of their neighbors. In fact, the war in Ukraine could end right now if the US said: no more funding and Ukraine may not enter NATO. That’s it. Instead, we are fanning the flames of these conflicts to the detriment of all combatants.

@@pooody 1) Germany is controlled by Russia 2) In the alliance everyone is protecting everyone... it is not the US protecting Germany, the US protecting Spain... 3) NATO does not control countries parliaments, and therefore NATO can´t decide on the % paid for the army. NATO does have a GOAL of 2%. Today Germany is paying 2%, and discussion is to aim it to 2,5%. 4) Incoherent rumble - we (the US) can´t pay to the country that we are supposed to protect you against??? Later he explains that it is Germany - NOT the US that pays to Russia... well with the same logic the US pays to CHINA all the time for goods????? Seems to apply only to things Trump decides.

To be accurate, it was (2023) 3.49% for USA and 1.57% of GDP from Germany. They agreed that all members of nato try to reach the 2% goal after 10 years. Edit: The original video was uploaded 2017. The numbers he is talking about are from 2012 and Germany contributed 1.31% , not a little bit over 1% as he claims. Also 2012 was the last time USA spent more than 4.2% GPD.

He was on point regarding GDP percentage. Not so much about protecting France though, as they have nuclear weapons with a second strike capability of their own. And in fact, they weren't actually in NATO between 1966 and 2009. And I think it's interesting as well, that he calls it inappropriate that Germany got energy from Russia, when he trusted Russia more than his own intelligence services at one point. Oh, and the USA may spend over 4% on defence, but not all of that is "for NATO". A significant portion is for Asia and the middle east as well.

A few points here! 1) There is not a DEMANDED % that NATO countries should pay... there are GOALS that urges NATO countries to pay 2% of GDP 2) NATO can´t rule over sovereign states, so each country´s (Parliament) decides what they pay 3) The US doesn´t "defend Germany",,, the US as a part of NATO defends Germany IF Germany is attacked, and SO DOES ALL NATO members! 4) That the US had decided itself, INDEPENDENTLY to pay 4% is a decision of the US... NOT a thing that can be blamed on others... the US could, if it wanted, stay with 2%. 5) European NATO members pay at the moment more to Ukraine from their GDP than what the US does! The US was at 9th place a half a year ago.
