I always love your videos but this one has to be the best. As an older learner, the fear of not being able to remember grammar or vocabulary is powerful. Shaming a student simply because they are having difficulty only makes it worse and I'll bet many stop learning because some teachers do that. What you said, especially your analogy, made perfect sense. Thank you!!!! Ps. I had a teacher shame me. Now that I have different teachers, they are all complimenting me on how my skills are growing and being retained. They don't make a fuss if I forget something.

I am happy to hear that you found this video helpful and inspiring! I am also sorry to hear that you had those negative experiences with teachers. I think some teachers often forget the true purpose of their job. They often forget that their job, at its core, is not to judge and push, but to nurture and inspire. But I also know there are so many teachers who do understand it and they are just wonderful!

@@SpongeMindTV 감사합니다. It was only 1 teacher. I have the utmost respect for their ability to teach Korean, but it was very painful to be treated so harshly. In retrospect, I think it slowed down my learning. As someone who also teaches (although I do not have any formal education in teaching, but have taught various subjects in my life), I always encourage my students. I currently teach English speaking and reading to an 8 year old Korean boy. He's amazing! Yes, he makes some mistakes more than once and I just gently give him the correct pronunciation of the word. Where necessary, I use my limited Korean to explain words and phrases to him and make sure he understands what I've explained. I would never do anything to make him feel bad and as a result, he has told his mother and aunt (who is one of my teachers... one I absolutely enjoy working with) that he really loves his weekly lessons with me. I am fortunate to have his aunt as one of my teachers as well as another iTalki teacher plus a private teacher for pronunciation work.... and all the wonderful RU-vid and Twitch teachers I follow and learn from.

This is one of many videos of yours I've ended up emotional and moved during!! You have such a way with both words, wisdom and language. I just wanted to say I hope your channel grows in all the ways you want for it, and in your personal life as well. I feel blessed by a lot of what you say, especially in this video because I realized how much I push myself toward perfection and in the process, lose motivation instead of letting things come and go freely. 선생님은 정말 현명해서 시청자들한테 위안을 줘요. 수고 많으셨습니다!

Perfection is such an overrated thing, isn't it? It not only stresses us out but it's also a bit boring. I bet, as a baby, there was a time when you used to be excited about speaking your native language. And I'm sure that by itself is no longer exciting for you, precisely because you speak it flawlessly. I most certainly don't find it exciting to speak Korean :P By the way, your comment also moved me too. I often feel that making RU-vid videos is a bit pointless simply because there are so many videos already, and a new video from me would be the last thing the world needs. But your comment helped me realize that I am not making these videos for the world; I'm doing it for people like you.

I am in love with your videos! It's so wonderful how you can turn any topic into wise and heart-warming life advice, and we can always find so much more than just a new language lesson. Thank you for such amazing work and your beautiful and loving approach to teaching a language!

Hi Maria~ Thanks for all the lovely words you said about this channel! I often doubt how much difference it really makes given that this is nothing but one of billions of RU-vid channels and a small one, but people like you help me shake all the doubt off and keep going. So thank YOU!

This is truly an inspiring video! I've been learning Korean for almost 6 months now, but I feel stuck. My Korean teacher isn't that supportive and there were times he mocked me each time I made a mistake or struggled for an answer. I enjoyed learning Korean before, but now I am slowly losing my confidence. I hope I'll be better someday.

Thanks for the love! I know how it feels to have such a teacher (from personal experiences). I strongly recommend you ditch him and find someone else. As a language teacher myself, I know such a teacher does much more harm than good no matter how much he teaches you or how good his explanations are. It's not about his knowledge or skills; it's about the chemistry between him and the learner.

I keep coming back to rewatch this video. It helps me get through the ups and downs of "wow, I'm learning so much and it feels great" and also "why can't I remember this, my brain feels like a rock". Thank you so much for the reminder that cultivating a mindset of openness and curiosity is the best way to approach things. ❤️

I really REALLY needed this. I've been up all night worrying about that exact thing. Reaching Intermediate, my vocab list is growing immensely and I can no longer rely on memorizing them all before moving on. It's terrifying to have a list of neverending words like that. I just have to learn to let go because this reminded me that the ones I know the best are just the ones I encountered the most often everywhere else except my flashcard decks. I just need to keep working and let them come freely. To be friends with the words and not a trap. Thank you!!!

Thanks for the kind words, Michelle. I think it's important to see our language acquisition process as a series of natural phenomena, like rain and snow, not as an accumulation of our own accomplishments. We don't make them happen. They just happen. All we have to do is to create the conditions for them to happen. Thanks for watching!

I love this analogy! It's s a good reminder to not work so hard to memorize something the first time you see it. But instead spend more time in the language so you see the word more often. Like people, the more times we see a word, the better we will remember each time until we get to the point that we won't forget it. Many people make notebooks and write word lists down and all that, and I just, don't. Sometimes I think, should I be doing that? There doesn't seem to be a big reason to and I'm doing fine not doing that. I am at an interesting point where some things are becoming automatic and I say a word, but then my brain freaks out, like, whoa, slow down, are you sure? And it was right, but I messed up the flow, so I have to get my brain to relax and let the automaticity build and stop second guessing :) Then maybe I can finally string together multiple sentences when talking. If I type or write I've noticed now I can pretty smoothly type multiple sentences quickly. Now I just have to get my mouth to do the same.

"But instead spend more time in the language so you see the word more often. " Exactly. "I say a word, but then my brain freaks out, like, whoa, slow down, are you sure? And it was right, but I messed up the flow" Exactly what I am experiencing with my German ^^;;
