I love starting my day w this. The composition, call and answer, chord progression, slide guitar (dobro too), lead to a climax then fade away..... soothing my soul.
I was 7 years old when this perfect jam came to El Salvador. I was born in the USA.and knew every word . I had to translate it to Spanish so my older brothers and friends know what Neil was singing. A few years Carlos Santana came and played at the Gimnacio nacional de El Salvador. I consider my self one of the few translators of the hippie era and rock translators.
Thinking back to the time I first heard this song and was immediately floored by it. And then years later, jamming it at excessive volume late one evening at my brother-in-law's house in the Philippines, while I was alone outside and drinking Tanduay rum and coke as I devoured a tasty blunt, and everyone's gone to bed except me, and yet nobody complained or asked me to turn it down. It's funny how Neil's music can take you places in your mind that are cherished dearly, but buried just as deep, or sadly, even forgotten about totally, until just now. Words is timeless musical perfection for everyone to embrace. Thank you Neil Young, for all you've created and given to my little world full of memories long ago.
This is one of two of Neil's songs that virtually transport me to a different space when sitting and listening with my eyes closed. The other is "Cowgirl In The Sand". I can't explain it -- it's like being in a dream, and no other songwriter has come close to such effect.
The limited movie theater release last year highlighting all the unseen footage and the song recordings at the ranch LIVE and uncut material for WORDS, ALABAMA, et, al is unparalleled from a true phenomenal genius in Mr. Neil Young. What better way to pay homage to the 50 year release of Harvest. All of us thank you for quite the treat! Words, literally can't describe the moment other than to keep on rocking in the free world!
being a old man now, my musical journey started in the mid 60s and is still continuing. NYoung was probably my biggest influence. starting with buffalo springfield. truly i thank GOD above for the music of that decade and into the 70s and the common sense to know how special those times where and how special the music was and still is. Thank you my friend, Mr Young
La memoria torna al tempo degli anni migliori. Quando i sogni prendevano il volo con le note di questa canzone. Non conoscevo una sola parola D'Inglese, ma certe melodie non hanno lingua. Sono univerali e vanno dritte al cuore. Bravo!
There was a lyric of Neil Young's from the song "On the Beach" that I could never forget where he sang something like ...though my problems are meaningless, that doesn't make them go away...that was so powerful in my mind that it shaped how I viewed and reacted to other people, even very grumpy or volatile people, to this day. Confronting came as a last resort after communicating or even just listening. Usually never got to a confrontational point. ( Usually, not always). But...All from one Neil Young lyric.
“Never knew a man who could tell so many lies. He had a different story for every set of eyes. Don’t know who he’s talking to, but I know it isn’t me, and I hope it isn’t you……you’re all just pissing in the wind. You don’t know it, but you are. And there ain’t nothing like a friend who will tell you when you’re just pissing in in the wind.” From “Ambulance Blues” written when this genius was 23. All the best to everyone.
His songs are fun to try and replicate. I spend hrs on my acoustic at home playing much of his music. Thanks for lending me a part of your soul, Neil. I love Alabama it’s a big part if my soul. Saw Neil in Biloxi.. HRCafe. 1990 👍🏼👍🏼
The genius of NYs creative process laid bare , still enthralling over 50 years later , the seeds of Harvest a perennial gathering of majestic fruits of labour that continue to mature and nurture the impoverished spirits in today’s desert where the discordant note flourishes .
This is my favorite song from his 71-72 period, or any period, for that matter. This is a gem of a performance even though it's only a rehearsal! I have always wished his version on Harvest would have been 15 minutes long. This song deserves every bit of 15 minutes, and I never want it to end. However, his Glastonbury '09 version is even better, if that's possible. I feel as though this song was in the shadow of Heart of Gold and Old Man, two other masterpieces off the same album. And don't forget Harvest, the title song. Another great one. And Alabama! Whew! I give up. What an album!
I agree with you! this song should have been fifteen minutes long or longer on Harvest. I have the "Journey through the past" vinyl and i play it as often as i can.Cheers
Wish I could hang out on the beach with Neil just one time. Soul food. This is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing. Someone and Someone Were Down by the Pond
ce morceau m'accompagne depuis 1972, dans les moments de bonheur et de peine je ne me lasse pas de cette version, j'ai revu Neil en 2013 toujours avec de l'émotion , il fait partie de ma vie..........
Yes...we had our own world back then. It was a simpler time. Music formed what we've become. The smell and the texture of that brand new album sleeve; I will never forget it. Harvest was just that; a Harvest of Spirit, youth, pain and wondering what the future may bring. Though I was young, I knew what moved me. This album moved me. Oh how I empathize the young generation of today. There can never be another 1969/1970. It was Beautiful. It was Natural. It was Free. Peace Bluematter1969. Love...
xxRenaissanceManxx Happy New Years. no one eles can get close to are generation nor come close. the king started laughing at all you wanna be... peace Man
When I was 17 I found this album in my sister's record collection. I remember being out of my mind listening to this. And I began a journey with my guitar that will never end. Thanks Neil
I don't know if you will get this message but I have to be in your most famous fan for life group and you have been an inspiration to my life and my family what a legend for humanity God bless you Neil and your beautiful family
This was Neil's best band IMHO, I especially loved Tim Drummond on bass RIP, excellent tasteful player on that flatwound Fender Precision bass. I bought this album when it was new and still love it. It made me a Neil Young fan forever.
Neil's lyrics and music are my jam, especially the more profound ones like Words. What a great country blues song, that needles jazz. The composition of this song just blows my mind. So beautiful.
@@tonychristo8393 The greatest songwriter of all time Neil Young. The only one that comes close is Bob Dylan. They are dego the 2 greatest of all time. Neil music is by far my favorite over bobs as Neil music is far more personal and heartfelt than bobs. Here as Bob's music is more generic you feel. Neil seems to write about himself a lot more than bob which makes it more emotional In my opinion
@@j9186 I really love Neil! I'm going to say something I normally don't! As far as quantity & quality go, ( this is the thing I've never liked saying) but, Neil is the ( I'm cringing) greatest! There I've done it!!
Just what i was thinking, bittersweet and nostalgic plus melancolic don't you think? He wrote this song when he was having personal problems with Terry Snodgrass the actress.
This rehearsal I have listened to for years and do my best artistic drawing and painting to this very version. Crazy Horse right there, just like the beginning. I love this version, the best natural high i have ever had! Rock on Neil and kick ass, take names and then kick more ass!
Such an amazing piece of music, honestly. Gives me shivers with that steel guitar. Neil is the best thing that came out of Canada. I am so glad I got to see Ben Keith on the pedal steel on one of Neil's tour stops in 2008 In Saskatchewan Canada. Front row and center. Words, Words....thanks Neil.
I saw that tour in Toronto. Incendiary show-- did Neil violently tear alla strings off of Old Black when you saw him? Christ, the whole arena was losing their shit as Neil just thrashed & hammered his guitar... so moving.
@@paulsnider9208 late to discussion -- am I correct that you said you saw the 72 tour in Canana, the one where he played the awful Flying V? I'd really be interested in knowing your thoughts on the show...Time Fades Away was my keyhole to Neil Young....and I wore it out -- However I've also heard entire shows from same tour -- and they just are not very good... I know he was unhappy and under a lot of pressure... Thanks..And Hello from this HORRIBLE future. Jan 2021.
Crosby,Stills,Nash did the harmonies on Harvest.Had to sing to the tape.Never forgave Neil ..Also George Harrison thought Neil was a terrible guitar player.Just didnt get his style.Neils guitar on this is awesome !
Simply Unbelievable!!! My heart, mind, and soul are laughing and crying at once...have this 'album' -- that is the soundtrack to Neil Young's film "Journey through the Past." I know it, I've been in it...15.5" long...get ready...
Elizabeth Gamard gave my album to my son as one of his mom's cherished possessions and in beautiful condition. love it.....have the DVD, came w/the Blu-Ray Archives.
i just wore this words version out as a teen in the mid 70s, playing along to it on electric guitar in my bedroom with the sounds up all the way -- what a great way to learn guitar,,,,,,
There are those of us that love u Neil! We love u 4 yr honesty & generosity. 🤗 We may never meet but we have met! Twice, I've called out 2 u in concert. Once u asked asked us wat we would like next & I said "Words". Man, u gave me that Scorpio look like "watever"! The 2nd time I called out "Ontario". U looked in my direction & u gave me a 👍. Thank u Neil!!!!
I was there too...it was Neil's birthday in November in 72'...front row center seats at that show---When they did Cinnamon Girl I thought the walls were going to collapse at the Airie Crown from the vibration, it was out of body kind of feeling. surreal.
I remember my first quarter in college, i had accumulated 116 complete listenings of this song on itunes. Which is crazy cause I'd barely use itunes to play the song. I'd always use vlc so that i could increase the volume to higher than the maximum volume, and smoke pot with all my friends in the pavilion by the river. its his voice that gets me in this song. and its also his guitar. i used to not understand it, so every time id listen to it id be in a dazed mellowed out but very self aware state that was filled with confusion. i could never put my finger on the feeling of loneliness described by his voice and guitar playing. until one day, i had finally reached the depths of my depression, and now i understand the song.
I could literally play this on loop over and over! Saw Neil in 91’ Boston Garden! What a show, what a time in my life. 17 yrs old and it was all about going to shows!
could never wrap my arms around the original version on Harvest at first. -- the explosive lead freak out thing thrilled me but it came too late..... so I went to this one -- this is by far my favorite...but the original harvest version is a sound to behold if I'm in the right mood to hear it..... it sounds calculated -- this was just a rehearsal.... whatever.. stay safe.
This song puts me into a trance and I love it I cannot dance to this song, it is too deep in meaning to me that I just fall into my past life and my happy place and memories Thanks for posting I could play this on piano very well once upon a time thanks for posting Journey through the past album and film fitting name huh
+StPalliGrl I think if you were actually a fly your focus would be on landing on the humans food while they are playing; less chance they would swat you! Of course you could enjoy the music while you dine. When they stop then head for the wall; but watch out for the spiders! Your welcome. PS- Try not to inhale too much of the reefer smoke as it may impair your flying.
btw this song is played in the movie "journey through the past" which has a lot of songs, and shows neil young and his musician buddies and friends. its pretty chill, watched it a whole bunch of times. you get to see them smoke a couple joints and stuff. anyways... this song features a video of them playing this song in a barn. But Im almost sure that the video they used is a different instance of this song, and that they just have the video partly to fill the gaps in video.
i personally _love_ both the film & the soundtrack of ‘journey through the past’. it’s a really touching albeit deeply stoned look at an innerestin’ time in an innerestin’ man’s life.. a semi-lost countercultural mini-gem. 🌾✨ (would really appreciate too it if the film / at least the “soldier” or barn scene[s] could stay on YT.. )
In 2000, I saw Neil at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. I was on about five grams of psilocybin; when he struck the opening chords to Words, I busted out bawling with joy and also had the sensation of levitating several feet in the air. Words is one of my favorite Neil songs, and I'd never heard it live before. What a perfect night--- he even closed the show with another of my favorites, Mellow My Mind. In fact, the whole set list was jam-packed with rarely played numbers. I loved Neil for that: he doesn't gear his set lists to casual fans but rather the diehards. It was a religious experience for me; thank god I was able to score some shrooms that day-- psilocybin puts you right inside the music. The emotional impact of the music is multiplied ten-fold. Shrooms are nothing short of a gift from god; he (or she or it) meant for us to use them to gain insight into his creation. All in all, one of the most wonderful nights of my life.

ah yea heard this when I took truffles couple of years back, I thought this song was blasting me in the couch with waves of bliss. loved it. Especially since they talk in between the parts which was a fun puzzle to solve xD
