Balancing work and life is rarely discussed by architects but taking a vacation is an important part of your professional life. This week I'm
v-logging about my travel kit and imploring you to take some time off. As I started packing up my gear to head out of town myself, I thought it would be fun to show you I travel with, my new favortie bag and how this architect approaches vacations as an essential part of practice.
My new favorite bag is by LowePro, it's the Fastpack 250AWII: amzn.to/2ramXCk
Not only do I use it for traveling but also for site visits. It holds my 15" MacbookPro, my DSLR, lenses, sketchbook, and as I mention in the video there's a pocket for everything you might imagine taking with you. It conveniently fits the Mavic Pro drone in the top compartment too. I bought the older model, but the AWII has an integral rain cover and tripod holder on the side, which are both nice upgrades.
// GEAR I USE //
DSLR CAMERA:
* Canon 70D: amzn.to/29klz7k
LENSES:
* Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: amzn.to/29l7ac5
* Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: amzn.to/29x2QcI
AUDIO:
* Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): amzn.to/29qlNM3
* ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): amzn.to/2dFDaKp
ARCHITECTURE GEAR:
* Prismacolor Markers: thirtybyforty.c...
* Timelapse Camera: thirtybyforty.c...
* AutoCAD LT: amzn.to/2dxjMDH
* SketchUp PRO: amzn.to/2cRcojz
* HP T120 Plotter: amzn.to/2dBGf1O
* Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: amzn.to/2dhq5ap
STARTUP TOOLKIT:
* Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: thirtybyforty.c...

Mozart wrote in a letter: "When I am, as it were, completely myself, entirely alone, and of good cheer - say travelling in a carriage, or walking after a good meal, or during the night when I cannot sleep; it is on such occasions that my ideas flow best and most abundantly."

What I find most awesome about videos like this and the one about time management is that you can substitute "architecture" with any profession and they will make perfect sense still. Very inspiring for non-architects, like myself. Thank you for taking time to do this, Sir!

Inspiring! This really inspired me as a fresh graduate of Architecture, I have been really looking into the definition of Success that I said I wanted to achieve in life these few years.. And POP! Your words came right to my eyes and shot into my heart! This is the success I was looking for! Thank god I found your channel recently and I like your video really much!! Thanks for being my inspiration!

Wonderful advice to even those of who aren't even architects. Concerning your hiking pack: add a spork, plastic or titanium, a space blanket, and a Swedish fire - steel.

The culture of this profession beginning from the education on is shaped around the notion that an architect basically should be a slave to architecture. They should sleep less, take fewer vacations and even be ok. with getting paid less. Basically they shouldn't enjoy a life outside of architecture and should treat it almost as a kind of religion being worshipped every waking hour. Of course this can't be a working recipe for a healthy, happy life... (Obviously very subjectively I think that even many of the starchitects' faces carry traces of lives lived wrong. Radically excluding Bjarke Ingels of course! An interesting anectode: Koolhaas visits his studio and then says sth. like this: "This place is too good to be true. One cannot practice architecture in such a happy environment.") A personal definition of success that you mentioned here is of utmost importance and I think everyone should contemplate how trivial "success" (in the conventional meaning) compared to one's well-being is.
@30by40

...when's the vacation? cheers my friend...

I think that holds for any profession. We have horrible workplace culture in US with 658000000 vacation days unused in 2016.

Yes. I was thinking my comment is a little ironic. All that tech is allowing you to reach out to the world in a creative way and here I am saying leave it at home. It's about finding a balance I suppose. I'll check out Muir tomorrow using Google of course.:)

Eric I really like this video. Especially your description of what success means to you. I do however think that you should travel lighter. Man - way to much tech in that backpack. Why not just bring a sketchbook pencils and some markers to sketch. We are all relying way to much on tech. The reason your vids caught my attention originally was seeing you do design work on sketch paper. Anyway enjoy your holiday:)
@30by40
@30by40 7 лет назад
thanks +Patrick Daly...the sketchbook is buried beneath all that tech, but I understand this amount isn't for everyone! it's just what's driving me creatively lately...I'm guessing your bag would be much lighter with a pad and paper...more John Muir-like, right?

as cool as that backpack seems, I've used similarly organized backpacks and i I'm guessing that one is also incredibly uncomfortable and heavy. I'm not paid to say this, but the osprey bags have exceptional design and durability. I've been using one called the comet for years and it's great. I'm also an architect (landscape), still a designer without accredidation I suppose
