What good is a knife unless it is sharp? Not everyone can sharpen a knife well, but Work Sharp makes it so easy anyone can do it. Unless you have no hands...that would be hard. But still...find out Preparedmind101 recommends Work Sharp for home AND field knife sharpening.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

My father explained to me why a sharp knife is a safe knife. 1. A sharp knife cuts in to whatever you're working on and doesn't skip off, potentially into you. :) 2. If you know you're working with a "Scary Sharp" knife, you tend to be more careful. His father told him the same. This logic has worked for me over the years.

and im sure you';; know also, a sharp knife requires less effort and is more efficient. To quote abe lincoln "if I had ten hours to chop down a tree, i would spend 9 hours sharpening my axe." :D

Guy Montag Yep that's also a good point. :)
@TheMireau

yep, and also a dull knife will rip more instead of slicing through tendons, muscles, flesh in case you cut yourself severely so you heal faster from a cut with a sharp knife, that is also why scalpels are so damn sharp.
@TheKimjoh560
@TheKimjoh560 7 лет назад
Its true but I would say that by far the safest aspect of a sharp knife is that you dont have to apply force when working with it. You can mess up with a sharp knife aswelll and it does alot of damage, but it doesnt do anywhere near the same damage as a not so sharp knife with alot of stored kinetic energy behind it. A sharp knife will cut you to the bone but blunt one might take a finger off.
@47LeDoux
@47LeDoux 10 лет назад
The reason a dull knife is more dangerous is, a dull knife you have to really bear down on something to cut it and you have less control so you could accidentally cut yourself and a dull knife rips it doesn't Cut clean like a sharp knife.

It's just the original one so ya I rounded some tips off and the belly of a few knives have dip in them but with practice it's by far best sharpener ever. Chris, another nice video, btw. About why a duller knife is less safe than a sharp one has several parts in the answer. 1. like someone else pointed out, a sharp knife has less resistance to what is being cut, which gives the sharp one more control and less likely to slip. 2. from a medical perspective, if you do cut yourself, a dull knife will tear the skin & a sharp blade will give a much cleaner (although deeper) cut which will probably bleed less & will for sure close quicker (or be easier to close). From my experience, a sharp knife hurts a little less, too. That's why surgeons use razor sharp scalpels. 3. a sharp knife is just more fun and requires less work. Due to your videos, I'm saving for a Work Sharp. Thanks for the video.

I've had one of these for a couple of years, and I love it. There are optional belts and other accessories that you can order from the company web site, and they are all worth the money. By far the best knife sharpener ever made! It can also do a nice convex edge, and it will take care of all your kitchen knives, too.

Great video The dull knife is more dangerous because you have to use more pressure with a dull knife. A knife in a cut reaches maximum resistance just before it slips.When the knife slips, that is when you cut yourself. I had to get several sets of stitches before I learned this. If you have to push really hard, stop and sharpen the knife.

The WS is the best money I've ever spent on a sharpening system. I can't wait to get my hands on the Ken Onion Pro model. I've had the WS field sharpener for ten months now, and it lives in my EDC backpack. Awesome sharpener. I use it at least every other day. For the most part, all I need is the ceramic stick and the strop. I never let my EDC knives get very dull. One trick I do is to apply green buffing compound to the strop. It makes the short strop work a lot better.

Thanks, I was just looking at those sharpeners and was glad to hear your thoughts. I wish you'd mentioned what grits those belts were though. I definitely like both those sharpeners, but I'm using an ax, hatchet and splitting maul a lot this winter and want something I can sharpen those with. I'll keep looking.
@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 10 лет назад
You'd use the green belt. Then you take the guides off and rotate the belt assembly forward three clicks and hold the Worksharp in your hand and move it on the axe. At least, that's how I do it. If you want a 25 degree angle you can use the guide. I sharpen my tomahawks with the worksharp using the guide. The Frontier Hawk is literally razor sharp. The Pipe Hawk has a more sensible utility edge.

Hey Chris. I really like your video. The saying "a sharp knife is a safe knife" refers to needing less pressure when cutting with a sharp knife, making it safer. Less chance of slipping while cutting.

I spent 35 years hand sharpening and honing knives as taught by my grandfather with stones, ceramics and diamonds before I ever bought anything power operated. The problem is the owner of the knife when it comes to a WSKTS OR KOE 99% of the time. Worksharp flat states that you should practice with the tool before using it on a knife of value to you, be it a $60 knife or $600. Read instructions, manuals. Watch YT...invest time. Currently I use the WSKTS KOE on knives other people ask me to do tip repair and hog work on. Then I go back and hone with ceramics and strop. I can get those fancy mirror polish Samauri blinding bevels that are so popular now..??? Why??? IDK, you're gonna scratch it when you use it anyway.! Never any sparks. Blade never gets warm, let alone hot. Never ruined a knife. I could do the same with a belt sander. This is more convenient. All people care about is looks. Not performance. If you polish an edge bevel by hand with sandpaper and diamond films to even out a bevel and make everything consitant, and the edge stays maintained and stropped regularly, there is no difference I can tell between that and a WSKTS system.

Go and buy a few $1-2 knives at dollar stores and go to town practicing. No big worry about wrecking a blade and you come across some gems sometimes. I found a $130 Wusthof in a bin and fixed a small tip break in 10 minutes. Found it on first time checking the dollar store.

You might want to mention that the belt sander will only give you a convex edge. The manual one will work with v-grinds. I was thinking of getting the Ken Onion edition of the Work Sharp but I only have a couple of convex blades and have no intention of re-profiling all my v-grinds. I'll stick with sandpaper and mouse pad for convex and the Spyderco Sharpmaker for v-grinds. FYI, the Ken Onion model of the Work Sharp has wider belts and a better angle adjuster among other things.

I saw the field guide sharpener at Dicks the other day. I almost went ahead and bought it, but I was kind of turned off that it only has a 20deg guide. My Tops BOB is supposed to be sharpened to 25deg according to the maintenance instructions - in fact, aren't most outdoor or thicker blades supposed to be sharpened to 25deg? So how well does it work for those types of blades?

a dull blade is more dangerous because you have to put more force behind them to make them cut and that means you normally have less control over it (like if it slips you've got alot of force behind it and can really hurt yourself) as compared to a sharp knife that just cuts with little force you can control it better

The Ken Onion one has wider belts, 5 grit types instead of 3, variable speed so your not over heating the steal (if you don't know what your doing). Is the KO version worth it? It depends on what you're gonna be using if for. (Personally I think it is)
