Maximus is depicted as a perfect leader. Still, I like the fact there were a couple of gladiators who chose NOT to follow him (Hagen between them). Then, they died or were forced to join the group in order to survive. Leadership is an inherent quality of the person but it's necessarily completed only after external circumstances

The best part about this is how when you look at the makeup of the two sides, the "barbarian horde" actually resembles the pre-Marian Triarii that Africanus would have had as his third line while the supposed "Legions of Scipio Africanus" are about as far removed from the three lines as you could being chariot-mounted archers. And Maximus, using Rome's odd mixture of extreme discipline and relentless aggression once opportunity showed itself, triumphs despite being set up to die... almost as if the spirit of Rome was striking back against the mockery being made of its history.

Well said. But to play devil's advocate a bit: Hannibal's core Phoenician infantry also fought in the traditional hoplite style, though of course the style of their armor and shields was rather different. And at Zama Scipio also had a large contingent of Numidian cavalry. Of course there's little relation between them and this fantasy chariot force but I believe that's what they're supposed to be as they did play a large role in the battle. For one thing Numidians being north Africans have much lighter skin tone than the Nubians used here and they fought as nimble unarmored light cavalry chucking javelins and had nothing to do with chariots as far as I know. By that period barely anyone was using chariots. Frankly the most unbelievable part of this whole battle is that the gladiators managed to pull off the diamond formation with perfect timing and precision with zero prior drills and organization.

That guy who says, "I served with you." like... He knew who Maximus was? Knew him enough to follow directions and trusted him as a leader? Ever since I saw that as a kid, I was entranced. It was such a throwaway line, but it reflected so much reality. Soldiers becoming slaves, slaves becoming gladiators. A widespread army that knew its generals. Immediate trust in life or death situations, but saying nothing until it was clear that there would be a leader. Saying "I will follow, and I thank you for leading." That one guy offscreen... He taught me about gladiator and army culture, more in that moment than I learned in a year of Latin class.

@DustDevilRage
@DustDevilRage 2 года назад
I think of what might have happened for that slave who said “I served with you” to be in that spot, maybe he was in a battle where the legion got its ass kicked and various legionnaires escaped with their lives, hiding by day, moving by night, trying to live off the land and avoid capture by enemy forces or slave traders. Or maybe he was just a straight up deserter, got grabbed by who knows and sold into slavery. And the fact he recognized Maximus, knew him, but knew Maximus had no clue who he was, he kept quiet, until then, until death was expected. If Maximus hadn’t spoke up about the Army and strategy, that guy would have most likely taken it to the grave that they served together. Leads me to believe that he didn’t want to have a conversation with Maximus about how he wound up in his situation. Wonder what that guy was thinking when he first saw Maximus? The General of the Armies of the North. I’m sure he thought…….”How the hell did he wind up in here with me?”

Few things to note in this scene. At first, not everyone is convinced about the speech by Maximus, hence they stay away from the group and gets killed. The Big guy doesn't trust Max until Max saved him from the incoming chariot. Once Max gains his trust, the big guy is part of the team. As for the scene, none of them are single long shots. I counted close to 100 cuts in 2min 23sec. That's how tight the editing was. The scene which has the chariot running over the formation has 7 different shots in about 2 seconds. These were carefully choreographed, edited and stitched together with brilliant musical score.

You'd be surprised how many older movies "hold up" in that sense. Bad CGI is the norm now, while older movies relied more on practical effects that, when done right, just look better most of the time. Then if you go back even further to movies like Apocalypse Now, Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, and Bullitt, you'll see the most spectacular action scenes ever since much less was faked and both the scale and danger were unparalleled. Modern CGI is a weak substitute, though for safety purposes I'm of course fine with it.
