People are all about how to make it more whip like. However they are ignoring the weight and length. In Castlevainia it's clear that the Morningstar is slightly longer than a whip. Which will effect accuracy immensely. I will give the Castlevainia Netflix show some credit Trevor mentions in passing that it takes a lifetime to master using the Morningstar, meaning even the shows writers saw how difficult a weapon like the Morningstar would be to use.

I see a bunch of comments saying that it doesnt whip like a whip because it lacks taper in the chain, which is true, but it is also true that the mass of metal hanging off the tip will not allow it to whip. The science behind this is the larger mass at the base speeds up the slightly lighter section, which increases the speed in the next less massed section, and so-on down the line. That clump of metal stops the progression, hanging an anchor at the tip, so the tip cannot obtain the speed of sound that a real whip would SNAP at. This is definitely more of a Ball and Chain style flail, with an extended chain, or, like others have pointed out, a meteor hammer.
@OneTrueNobody
@OneTrueNobody День назад
Which is why in the Netflix slow it doesn't often really whip so much as swing, with Trevor doing wacky maneuvers like swinging it around his torso to control the range and swing speed. Trevor uses it to bind and smash a fair bit. That it frequently causes vampires and night creatures to catastrophically explode on impact. The dual-whip moves he pulls in Season 3 are kind of BS, though.
@BrutalAthas

I think, you need chain that parts starts be smaller and smaller to make it "whip" to exchange that power into speed.
@sr71silver
@sr71silver 5 месяцев назад
In this specific that wouldn't help one bit. So long as you have that giant chunk of metal at the end of the "whip" no amount of improvements to the rest of the weapon are going to do a damn thing. And you can't take that chunk of dead weight away because then it's no longer the Morning Star Whip.
@the_redpyro4906
@the_redpyro4906 5 месяцев назад
@@sr71silver I wouldn't say it wouldn't do *anything.* Enough improvements in the construction and a smaller length could actually make it far better, it just won't ever be optimized with that much weight at the end. You won't get the proper whip effect, but it'll still be better than this version.
@sr71silver
@sr71silver 5 месяцев назад
@@the_redpyro4906 yeah but then you run into the tiny little problem that the optimal length of chain is 0. At which point you just have a mace. However my comment that modifications won't do anything was specifically in response to the op's suggestions on how to make it whip better. As in the verb "to whip." So long as the majority of the weapon's mass is concentrated at the very tip like that it is impossible to achieve the whipping action of a normal whip. The laws of physics won't allow it. But if you change the design so that the majority of the weapon's mass is not concentrated at the tip then you no longer have a replica of the Morning Star Whip. You just have a regular whip made of metal.

@@InDeathWeLove Yes true, i think however that you could negate it if the heavy part and the medium heavy parts are outweighing the morning star since it is all about revolving energy that would travel down the chain' when you round up to whip and "flick" (for the lack of a better word) the generated energy only increases and build to the crack we all like to hear. My idea is that yes it would be quite a monster to wield but it would be behaving as a whip hypothetically
@InDeathWeLove
@InDeathWeLove 5 месяцев назад
@@swordpanda7panda795 this is all just me guessing, however I believe with as much weight on it as Belmont’s chain whip has at the end for it to have enough weight in the beginning of the chain to flick the heavy weight at the end would make the whole whip so heavy that flicking it would be practically unfeasible with the strength of a regular human being. I mean look at when he is flicking the whip as it currently is he is already struggling to get the wave to travel all the way to the end of the chain. Now imagine a chain with enough weight to transfer enough to flick the weight with enough force to act as effectively as a regular whip. Another concern would be the weight at the end vs the strength of the chain if you thin it towards the end by the weight. If you make it too thin then the amount of force on it when the wave tries to be transferred from it to the weight might just break the last link(s) of the chain.

As a rope dart practitioner, I can assure you that with proper technique that thing would be monstrous. I've noticed that when people who don't know about rope darts and meteor hammers try using them, they tend to do a lot of horizontal techniques and hold them way too close to the end. I've already described a fair bit of this in Shad's vid about Scorpion's spear, which is just a rope dart.

You need to gradually decrease the weight of the links in order for the whip to whip. Just like a normal whip, it's tapered and the weight of the segments is gradually decreasing, then you have to add a LIGHTER tip, if it's heavier like in this case it really won't work like a whip. The tip must be significantly lighter than the rest of segments. I would use steel cable and taper that down, maybe start with a chain base.
@acehangman617
@acehangman617 5 месяцев назад
I think others pointed out that whips taper, and that the force moving down into a narrow space as it travels changes the energy into speed (Law of Conservation of Energy), so reducing the size of the links progressively would do that, but others have also pointed out that a thin chain at the end will have a lot of speed (theoretically enough to break the sound barrier) and that might put a lot of stress on the weight at the end when that energy goes from the chain to the weight. I think you could also try testing with a hinged chain instead of a linked chain, like a bike chain would be. Obviously would take a lot of work, finding thicker ones and linking them to shorter bike chains, but that would also allow you to keep the chain's hinge angle parallel to the ground while swinging, rather than gravity totally pulling it down. You could try having a swivel or ball joint at the handle to keep from having to twist it when you spin it around your head.

At the 7:31 mark, you can see that winding it back with the head stretched out in front of you first is not chambering the head enough to give it enough force to launch forward. In whip, to chamber for a Side Arm Flick, start with the whip outstretched all the way behind you, this will give enough pulling force to launch it forward, using a throwing motion like throwing an axe horizontally. That's the best way I can think of to describe how to properly throw a whip using the side arm flick. I'll make a video on it when the weather clears, but there are plenty of videos already out there, especially by Adam Winrich who's a 36+ times Guinness record holder and host of the Los Angeles Whip Convention (which I won silver in Obstacle Course January 2024). Look up "side arm flick", its a very different technique from the cattleman's crack (the one you use earlier in the video). A little bit of whip terminology: we call it "throwing" the whip, not simply getting it to crack. This is how you target train with a whip.

@Tyranth It doesn't work like a whip because it has no taper. I think you need to make it out of sections of progressively smaller chain. That way you would have a bit of taper so that you can load the end with enough energy to get it moving from that far away. Start out with some really heavy links (from something like 15mm dia stock) for about 20cm. Then a longer piece of slightly smaller chain etc. till you get to the size you used for this build. You could also stiffen the parts closer to your hand by covering the chain with heat shrink tubing. This was a fun video! I'd like to see you try to make a tapered one because I think it would work much better. It would be a lot easier to use even though it would be heavier.

Liking the new show very much, Tyranth. A few months ago during a live stream, I made a suggestion about Cane Swords. Super-chat limits on text length meant I didn't get my point across clearly. And then you all went on a tangent of legalities of having a Cane Sword and if you could make a legal, fake version. Does this ring a bell? Anyway, what I really was hoping you'd explore was techniques for a thin sword plus the cane as off-hand weapon. Like, do you want to reverse-grip or mid-grip the cane part? This isn't limited to Cane Swords. Scabbard as parrying weapons pops up in Kung Fu and Samurai movies as well. Just putting the suggestion out there. Cheers!

Yup. There are variants based on region, Kung Fu style, etc. It can be 9-section or 7-section with the links about 4-6 inches. Then there's a 3-section that has steel rods linked by rings. Yes, really. I'm not confused with the nunchuck staff thing. One of my Sifu's gave a brief history while teaching basic twirling techniques. Seems in battle, this was merely a backup weapon kept in the pocket of a few soldiers. When you look at the performance forms, it kinda makes sense. Many start with the Martial Artist running one direction, then pulling out the whip and attacking behind them. It's simulating when a battle formation has been broken and the soldiers are making a fighting retreat.

Growing up with this weapon I really wish I could teach you guys how to work the weapon, as well as dual wielding whips/chain whips/kunai and chains. Its all about getting that feel like its an extension of your arm and can feel the shift of weight you need to beat your target with. As for distance you want to calculate how much you wrap around you or your secondary weapon to sort of reel it in and make it easier to beat the target even closer than they are to compensate for their distance they're trying to gain on you.

Some issues with trying to use a chain as a whip... 1) As you mentioned...weight. They're generally just considerably heavier than the braided or twisted leather that most whips are made of. That really isn't helpful at all, even in the sense of having more mass to deliver more force. Whips tend to rely less on their mass to cause harm...and more on the velocity of the tip. Meaning that...right out of the gate, no matter how you design a chain whip...it's going to operate fundamentally differently than a normal whip. 2) The chain isn't contiguous like the leather bands of a whip. The strips of leather often run a good portion of the length of the whip, and are bound together in a way that makes their function more like that of just one long piece of leather, rather than many shorter pieces. A chain, by contrast, is a bunch of completely individual links, which entirely changes how force is distributed up and down the chain. Since the links can become completely slack, it means that they basically "bounce" off of each other, which is that "shock" you wind up feeling through your hand. 3) To even vaguely function like a whip, the object at the end needs to be very light in comparison to the chain itself. I know that it doesn't seem like it in Castlevania, but the head of Belmont's Morningstar is actually quite small, probably a fair bit smaller than what you're using. Three or four quite thin steel plates, notched so that they can be seated together in a star-like configuration. No plate should be more than 3 or maybe 4 inches in diameter (and spiked, for his pleasure). 4) It's really not meant to be used against armored targets. This weapon is specifically a vampire-hunting weapon. It's blessed, it's silvered, and its got some other odd fantasy shit to it. And...Belmont was trained to do this shit pretty much his whole life. It's not really a flaming weapon...but it causes vampires to burst into flame on contact. It sometimes stays on fire as a result of their burning bits sticking to it, I'd imagine. So, no, it's probably never going to be a practical real-world weapon. - Personally, I think a thinner, lighter chain, maybe even made of aluminum (because the chain itself shouldn't really be taking a lot of hits, and aluminum is still usually tougher than flesh. If the links are thin enough, it might be possible to double-link two chains in parallel at an offset, to make it only slightly stiffer and to more evenly distribute the force through its length without shocking your hand. Also, doubling up on that along the length of the half closest to your grip, would give it that balance of stiffness and flexibility in the fatter portion of a normal whip, that a chain whip innately lacks. Making it aluminum as suggested would probably keep the weight of such a weapon about equal to a steel single chain...but with considerably improved performance. The last foot or so of length before the head, could be single-chain, to emulate the typical single leather strap at the end of a whip. I don't know if it would really matter, or if it would be worth it anyway even if it did improve things. But it is something to make note of, I think.

Chain whip issue is that each link has the same diameter, weight, and will thus have the same potential momentum. If you want to build a chain whip that will act like a whip then you need to taper from a thicker heavier whip at the handle, to a lighter smaller whip at the tip. Kyle hill did a video making and discussing a chain whip if you want to use that as a reference for what I am talking about. This video is the equivalent of saying a rope is not a whip, which is obvious. No one would try to use a rope as a whip. But there are characteristics in a whip that make it act like a whip.

I guess I always assumed this weapon would be made of silver (undead monsters). Since silver isn't ideal for blades, a chain would be a pretty effective delivery method. If that's the case it doesn't need to act like a whip or a flail. The chain itself is the weapon, more like a Japanese kusarigami. Silver is denser than steel, as well. Cheers!

@R3_dacted0 5 месяцев назад
I think the issue here is that the momentum that is put into the chain is mitigated by the disproportional amount of mass that exists as you move down the length of it. Whips work because they taper as they come to a point, meaning there is less and less mass as you move down its length. The chain had consistent mass throughout it's entire construction and even had additional mass placed on the end. Since the mass was consistent through the entire build, the force that you imparted onto it when you flicked it was dispersed too quickly and was unable to propagate down the entire length of the chain. If you where to ever attempt to revisit this weapon, I'd suggest a chain that starts with large, heavy links that gradually taper off into smaller and lighter links as it gets to the end.

Flexible weapons are the hardest and typically the last weapons martial schools teach. The weapon is most like a chain whip/whipping chain from Chinese martial schools.

most real world parallel to the chain whip is a long flexible sword called an urumi or Indian whip sword that's infamous for being incredibly dangerous and hard to learn and to handle

I feel like it would just be better used as a rope-dart or monkeys fist type weapon instead of trying to Crack it like a whip

Why do you think the chain didn't work like a whip? If it was the weight, then perhaps a lighter material would help. Maybe you could try a plastic chain to simulate a fantasy magic light metal. Maybe the problem is the way the chain is articulated. The links slide down and then back most likely losing force. It's hard to describe what I'm talking about. But if you take your hands and make two interlocking rings then push and pull your hands together, that is the type of movement that may be stealing "whip" like energy. Maybe some wire or something can be used to keep chain links from sliding about as much. Or a different type of chain where the links can only spin instead of slide back and forth. Interesting video.

A chain whip is possible. If you have superhuman strength. Easy for a vampire or demon, hard for a mortal. It's like a solid steel quarter staff in that regard.

Ever since the NES games, I found myself asking, "Why would you replace a magic whip with a lamer flail?" Always thought Vampire Killer was way cooler than a ball and chain. Results were pretty much how I expected. 😅

If you think this thing is dangerous with the inverted grappling hook to look like the kooky tip of the whip from the show...the original Castlevania game version of the Morningstar is a spiked mace head...ya know the kind. Iron ball with lots of spikes all over it...that was the original game version of the weapon at max power. I will give the show credit, in the original games (before Symphony of the Night and the MetroidVania gameplay took hold) you start with a leather whip, you get the first power-up and it turns into a short chain whip with a metal ball on the end, then you get another power-up and it would turn into a longer chain whip with a spiked ball on the end...you could in some games get another power-up that would let you shoot fire from the tip. Netflix for the original Castlevania anime started Trevor with a leather whip...which he is damn dangerous with on it's own...but they had him find the Morning Star whip which could make magic fire and he would use in tandem with his leather whip...he could put both of them together to make a huge flame whip thing too which slots in nicely with sometimes the whip wouldn't just shoot fire but the last power-up would make it a flaming whip...either made entirely of flames of the chain whip was set alight.

The Morningstar should be seen as a meteor hammer, not a whip. Trevor uses some moves designed for that weapon in the show if i remember correctly (though he uses more whip techniques with it in general).

A good one to see how effective would be in real life are those HUGE throwing stars from Naruto, those where the handle is as big as their hands and it can close into a "flat" blade

Try a magual. Actually renaissance riot control weapon that is actually an effective foot fighter flail that isn’t polearm length. Basically zwiehander length with half being a bar another half being three sets of chains with three leads weights on the end. You hold your arms out and spin and it gets so much momentum’s that a swordman can’t safely block it. It is theorized as a weapon to break up duelers.

I wonder if using steel cable, instead of chain, would make it more functional? The cable should give it a bit more rigidity, if nothing else. It would also probably make it less likely to come back and hit the hand as much.

You should try out some ballistic gelatin for testing. It's fairly cheap, and could show some interesting results.

You should have made one that started with a big chain and then got smaller as it went down and then not put a head on it, just steel cable so that it gets skinny all the way down like a whip

Definitely think it could work with some tweaks. Tl:Dr= whiplike and maybe magnesium tip? Please hear me out i know this is long... Maybe make it more whip like thicker and slightly more rigid at the hilt (i know the comments are saying that) i also think maybe having the base be as heavy as the flail tip. The show does kinda go back and forth on him using it like a whip and a rope dart though. Also im not really sure how heavy the flail tip really is maybe something lighter? Not sure how possible thatd be. But i guess we come across the "welp... It is magic... Maybe its magic metal too" 🙄. Not saying get sterling silver but i think its lighter than steel. But i also know magnesium and mayyybe titanium are... Magnesium would kinda help with the "fire" aspect of it though.

Great vid. I could tell you went into this one knowing the outcome, but good on you for giving it a go anyway. I'd love to see you do a "body armour from junk" take to protect yourself just in case something horrible happens but you live in a country where body armour isn't something you can actually buy. Cheers!

You have impressive control over that LOTR maimer! 🤣 Look into the South African sjambok for a controllable blunt whip that will still cut to the bone. Used to be police issue; I hope they've switched to Tasers. The blunt, light plastic 2 metre/yard one I have will break wooden fence slats.

maybe shorten the chain... also I wonder if there's some way to have a chain that gradually tapers down in rigidity (like a bullwhip) rather than just being slack right at the handle.

For the rigidity, I almost wonder if a metal chord would work better than chain.

While a lot of people talk about strange weapons like The Hook Swords, they seam like they could be very deadly and do a lot of damage. On the other hand The War Scythe appears to be a failed spear. It was a farming tool turned into a weapon, and from what I can tell, it was only used in desperation. I mean, a pole arm sure, but a single sided spear... really. Just sharpen both ends and it would be a far better weapon. It's almost like sticking a reverse bladed saber on a long stick. Horrible Idea.

i have a theory to make a chain wip more whip like seen a video where a guy used a chain at the start, large steel cable at the middle, and smaleer cables towards the end, so i wonder... what if the chains where larger at the start but get smaller towards the tip so it would similar to how a whip work

Can you build shredder's retractable blade gauntlets (the 2012 animated style) i know they're similar to wolverines claws but im curious how arm mounted would differ from hand gripped, also since the blades have more separation they should provide less resistance in sharing impact force dospersal
