The general public didn't know much about autism in the '80s. This movie both helped and hurt awareness of the condition since for years autism only conjured up imaged by Dustin Hoffman's performance in this movie

Yeah, I have autism but I'm nothing like this character, the 2 most annoying things people do is they assume you're a genius or they're extremely patronising and talk to you like a child. My biggest issues are sudden loud noises (I don't scream or anything, but I'll have to stop what I'm doing for a while), and the concept of money is confusing for me, physical money I can understand value with but digital money I can't, so I have to withdraw physical cash when paying for things

Yes I agree but I wouldn't blame the movie. It's people's limited perception beyond what we're shown. We can't be expected to know everything about all subjects other than what's fed to us, which then becomes our general knowledge. I'd say its better to have limited awareness than none at all.

There is kind of a hint to the existence of Raymond in a similarity he shares with Charlie. There’s the part where the lawyer is explaining the fathers will and how Charlie will only get the car and the rose bushes. Charlie sarcastically repeats “I definitely got the rose bushes” several times. Ray liked to use the word “definitely” quite a bit.

When Charlie said that Raymond was living in his own little world, that statement isn't far from the truth. That was really a nice way of putting it, since people with ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) generally have a developmental disability in their brains which affects how they interact socially, or have hyper-acute sensitivity to sounds: they just process information differently than others. In today's modern diagnosis of ASD, Raymond would likely be classified as PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified). I have a nephew with autism, and proudly wear a blue puzzle piece pin. As he would say, "Autism is not a disability it's a different ability".

If you listen to the DVD commentary for the movie, they discuss how even though the story is totally fiction, the Raymond character was actually based on a real person and the writer said that there were many things the real man could do that weren't included because they were so impressive, it would've made the movie feel like sci-fi. One of the things he mentioned was how he could speed read 2 books simultaneously. One book with each eye. The real mans name was Kim Peek

It's interesting that throughout the movie I see Charlie more unstable overall and prone to emotional outbursts but because those outbursts are more commonly accepted and normalized he comes across as more "normal". Whereas Raymond' s outbursts label him mentally challenged because we can't relate to his specific triggers. The thing is Raymond can't relate to what Chalie's triggers any more than Charlie can relate to his so the only thing really that separates the two is what emotional state we perceive to be more acceptable even though Charlie's life is much more destructive and unstable than the life Raymond lived in the home. Funny how we judge others in life when we can't even imagine how someone might see ourselves.

I’ll say this as a child of the 80s. Back then, mental illness was a new frontier. People knew schizophrenia and maybe multiple personality disorder. Or if it was a physical disability, cerebral palsy or Down’s syndrome. Everything else got shuffled into the medical term at the time “mentally retarded.” To its credit. “Rain Man” enlightened a lot of people that autism even existed, although as we know now it varies a lot more.

Hey, keep in mind when this movie came out in 1988, there wasn't much known about autism. In fact, this movie introduced was so many people's first introduction about it. It was a totally different world. No internet, no cell phones. In fact, phones were wired. Everyone in a household shared a line. TV's were smaller, but way heavier. And .00001% of people had any idea was autism was back then. But as someone (me) that has autism who was alive in 1988 and wasn't still diagnosed, I watch the world around me change and be more aware of what autism is slowly throughout the 90's before being diagnosed myself because I would see chrematistics of what learned about autism in myself.

She helps educate MUCH lower-functioning autistic and other special needs children to help increase their level of functionality and socialization. A lot of these kids come to her extremely frustrated or violent and most of them are unable to speak. It warms my heart every time she tells me one of her students finally got to go into mainstream education with the other kids. It just proves that such children CAN be helped. I’ve seen many reactors to Rain Main treat the elevator scene as a moment of infidelity on Susanna’s part. I never did . I always read that as her way of thanking Raymond for healing Charlie’s soul and repairing his heart. Now, Charlie and Susanna have something to “talk about” and bring them closer together . Because Charlie’s heart is very big

Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for this. He's done many great movies. From the graduate, to marathon man, to many others. Even Meet The Fockers!

Dustin Hoffman based the character on a real person ( Kim Peak) he spent time with while preparing for this role, Kim Peak is even more incredible than the character in this movie, check this out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DLpCfHH1OVU.html

One of my wifes brother's had a learning disability when born. His mom had scarlet fever when she was pregnant with him. He was a grown man when I married my wife. He lived in a Group Home setting. Every Sunday, my wife and I would pick Dan up and bring him out to his parent's house for the day. There were times I can remember feeling so bad for him. In his 30's he got an eye infection and kept rubbing, until the eye had to be removed. Then the other eye, till he was blind. Until the day he died he would say "Love mommy". It sometimes seems life is cruel to so many, and kind to so few. We need more kind soul's, like yours.

About the music Zimmer said , most road movies uses striong guitar and a bunch of strings , but raimond is like in his own world , so why dont write a song for a world that doest not exist?

Big misconception, Autism does not necessarily mean increased intelligence

It's difficult to judge moralistic views and actions of a 34 year old movie by today's standards. To be honest, I would say the vast majority of the world did not know what autism was in in 1988. This changed a lot of that.

Thank you so much for reacting to this video. My brother has autism and I remember watching this as a kid and makes so much more sense as we got older. Temple Grandin is another movie worth checking out.

This film is super manipulative! I actually saw it in the theater and USED to love it before I started to recognize the Abstract Inversion throughout all Hollywood films. Example: This movie is a reverse parallel of...'Twins'. Fun Fact: The scene involving Raymond standing in the small town intersection during traffic is a reflection of his "I'm walkin' here!" moment from 'Midnight Cowboy' set in New York City. Also...the super creepy Italian actress molesting Raymond in the elevator is a reflection of her appearance as the temptress of another psychologically-stunted character in...Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Oh...I can do is this ALL day!!

I definitely got the rosebushes" -Me: "Hey, did you get the rosebushes?" -Tom: "Yeah, I got the rosebushes" -Me: "I got some rosebushes too" -Tom: "No way, you got rosebushes too?" -Me: "Yeah, I got rosebushes too" -Tom: "That's neat. We both got rosebushes" Honestly, I can keep with this shit the whole day ......XDXDXD
