Hello from California 😊 I am a county law librarian and worked at a public library as a page during my MLIS program. So nice to see some nice library content. I love being a librarian with all my heart. Best career ever.

I speak to my advisor on Tuesday about submitting application to University here in Ohio for my Masters in Library and Information Science! I am 43 and also an author / illustrator. Very excited about getting into this field as a complement to all of my passions. Was a photographer while I raised my son and now that Ive survived the first few years of empty nest syndrome, I have figured out what to do with myself again 🤓♥️ This video was so calming! Loved it.

Hello there! I've been so fortunate to stumble upon your channel, and have really enjoying watching your videos 😊 I am making the transition out of teaching and have been so blessed to secure an interview for a library assistant position, which is coming up (I'm a bit nervous!) with your wealth of experience, I would just like to ask for your advice on how I should approach the interview, and the types of things they may be looking for. Thank you so much in advance!

Hello!!! I’m so glad you found me! ❤😊 Thanks so much for watching! I too come from a teaching background! My advice for applying for a library assistant job is to focus on customer assistance! A library assistant’s job is mostly helping library customers find what they need, or help to use technology. Good communication and phone skills are desired (teachers are already pros at communicating and teaching new skills to others! So you’re already ahead of the pack!) Teamwork, flexibility and availability are all desirable too! Good luck on your application!!! 🤞🏼 Hope this helps!

Its so nice to see a vlog from a fellow Australian Librarian, its pretty cool that your working in a public library as I'm working in a School library and have never worked in a public library, I will say though the RFID barcodes are pretty amazing. Do you guys receive your books already covered and catalogued as we doing all our own cataloguing and endprocessing. Good luck on your studies to :) :)

Hi! First off let me just say, you are SO underrated! Your videos are so peaceful and lovely. It's like instant relaxation the moment I click play. Secondly, you mentioned you got a teaching degree before you went for your masters. I've been thinking of following that same path (I'm torn between becoming a teacher or a librarian, and I want to have the option by the time I finish college). Do you find that your education degree comes in handy with your current career? I know most MLIS courses don't require prior experience, but I still want to be picking up skills that could be helpful later on. Again, your videos are fantastic! ❤❤❤

Omg your comment made me tear up! 😭😭😭 Thank you so much! 💗 My teaching degree and my experience teaching across the grades and in the disability and special education space helps in this career EVERY DAY. No joke. We work in the literacy provision and education business, and the 2 careers cross over beautifully! If I wasn’t working in the public library system, I’d def consider working in the school library system! I’m so glad I did my degrees this way! Thank you so much for being here and taking the time to comment ❤️🙏🏼

It's so wonderful to learn that there are others that are also studying to become a librarian. I also have a masters degree in teaching and have gone back for a second masters in library and information science. Hoping to become a school librarian. Currently a classroom teacher at the elementary school level. Are there librarians in your public schools?

Hi from Adelaide - libraries are practically my second home - love them. We have a one card system whereby we can order and take out books and return them to any library within Sa. Is that the same in Victoria? What is the limit on how many things you can take out?
@very.casual.librarian
@very.casual.librarian 19 дней назад
Oh man - I LOVE THAT! No, people can return the books to any of the branches in our library service, but not any IN THE STATE! THAT IS EPIC! ❤️ There’s no limit to the number of items you can borrow at our library! (Except for console games - you can take 2 out at a time on each card.)

Hi there! I'm so happy to have found this vlog! I'm based in Melbourne (Frankston actually), that library looks a lot like Carrum Downs Library but I could be way off! I've always thought about working in a library, but I'm not sure what pathway is best. I just got my Bachelor of Creative Writing, I work as a writer in an incredibly fast-paced marketing agency, I'd definitely enjoy the quieter setting. Should I go ahead and study the Master of Information Studies (Charles Sturt has a promising course that includes archives/children's literature/and librarianship as majors) or should I go for a Diploma? I would really love to have your professional opinion. My job is 9am-5pm 5 days a week so finding time to volunteer will be difficult.
@very.casual.librarian
@very.casual.librarian 6 месяцев назад
Hey there! ❤ thanks for being here 😊 hmmm - Diploma or masters? The Diploma is shorter (and also costs less!) so that might be a factor to consider! But the masters gives you the full qualification and can open doors to more career paths… Your writing job would be an excellent background for the degree! I haven’t had to do any volunteering as part of my course as yet, but I do have a week’s work placement coming up. The course at Charles Sturt has been great so far! The lecturers are all so knowledgeable and passionate! 👍🏼

Hi, thanks. I have found your clog very interesting and helpful. I am currently a teacher and would like to make the change to becoming a librarian/library worker. You mentioned that you are completing a Masters. Has this been very practical in training you to work in a library as someone who has come from another industry? Or has it assumed a prior librarian skills.
@very.casual.librarian
@very.casual.librarian 7 месяцев назад
I’m 30% of the way through the course, and so far it has been all theory subjects, but we do work placements too - I have one next year. I don’t think you need prior knowledge for my course, but I’ve found working in the industry has been really helpful with many of the assigments! Thanks so much for watching! Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any more questions! ❤️

Hello, Another Australian viewer here, I am going to be starting my diploma at Tafe end of this month but have been doing an Advanced diploma in history at UNE ( 3 units to go woo hoo 🙂) and hoping to combine my two loves of research and history 🙂. Oh you’re gonna love it! Some of the course material can be a little dry, but it’s the ‘bread and butter’ stuff of the industry, so as long as you get through and pass it 🤷🏼‍♀️👍🏼 One of my colleagues did the TAFE qualification, and she’s been in the industry nearly 40years!

Oh really?!? How’s your resume and application skills? Are you getting to the interview stage? Library jobs often have HUGE numbers of applicants (our last hiring for the casual pool had literally hundreds of applications for 12 positions!) so it’s important that your application stands out. Can you get some feedback from your last applications?

Hi There! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm not sure what the process is in Gambia, but here in Australia you can either do a diploma, a graduate certificate, or a Masters in Information Science (Librarianship) at a Tertiary Institution (A university or college). I think it would definitelybe worth reaching out to the Librarians. working in the libraries locally to you, and asking them what the process is there, and what they did to get their qualifications. Good luck - it really is a wonderful career

How to arrange books in librery?
@very.casual.librarian
@very.casual.librarian 5 месяцев назад
It can vary from library to library, but in ours the adult books and the teen/children's books are separate. Then they are arranged as either fiction or non-fiction. Fiction are in alphabetical order, and non-fiction are arranged into genres, and also by dewey decimal system. Aside from books, we also have shelves for DVDs, magazines, games, CDs, audiobooks, and a seed library! Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment! :)
