What a great video! Thank you so much for this. I am currently a masters student studying HRM and I am just about to start my HR career as I have secured an internship. I have been looking all over for videos like this so looking forward to the HR series. It's great to see black women who are in the HR profession as I aspire to be a successful black women in HR too. I also started a RU-vid channel talking about my journey and hope to bring more insight from a student perspective in HR. Thanks again :)

Well done on securing your internship. May I ask how you went about it? I have a HR degree but struggling to get a job without experience

@@shantellekayy1656 Thank you Shantelle. When applying for my HR internship, I made sure that I tailored my experience on my CV to match the job description. I don't have specific experience within HR but I do have experience in customer service predominantly. I would talk about examples of how dealt with queries from customers and how this can translate to transferable skills when dealing with employee concerns within HR etc. I would also mention scenarios in the interviews as to how I worked well in a team and solved challenges and relate it to the tasks required of me in the job role. The main point that I put across was that I am open to learn. I am not perfect but I would like to put my knowledge into practice to be successful. Finally, you need to show how passionate you are about the company and how you can add value to the company. The hiring manager was impressed with me because I mentioned how I might change specific things within the company as I got the internship in a SME so they were open to hear my ideas and found that I had a creative approach to trying to solve problems. Researching the company is also key as when you understand what they sell it looks very professional on your behalf. If you don't have any kind of experience really dig deep in terms of what you did in your HR degree. Talk about projects you completed, if there were any challenges within those and how you went about solving it. Without HR experience I was able to get this role but you need to keep applying and keep trying, never give up as I have been applying for years also, since trying to do a placement year in my psychology degree and failing to find a HR placement. A few years down the line I was finally able to get one. I really hope this helps :)

Alisha Parchment wow thank you sooo much for taking your time to reply back to me in detail. Your comment is really helpful and it will be useful to me. I’m just abit unsure on how to add all the details mentioned in my CV as I don’t want my CV to look overcrowded. I mainly have customer service experience within the retail sector, just another question if you don’t mind... did you add examples of how you dealt with customers queries in your job experience section or your profile section on your CV?. Thank you so much & May God bless you

Great video. It’s refreshing to hear a positive message, sometimes HR get a bad reputation.

Thanks for watching and I agree that we get a bad reputation. Usually down to misunderstanding of the role or a few "bad apples"!

Thank you for your video! I think a lot of people don't realise that the HR and specifically ER Managers are there to assist the business, not their employees. There are there to protect the business. In my experience they don't even have a say and if the business decided to start a formal procedure against an employee, the ER Manager has no choice but to implement it. The normal practice in my company when you raise an issue was to wait 3 months after the incident so that you can't take them to the Employment Tribunal and then they give you an outcome to your problem, then victimise you until you leave voluntary. I feel that people who aspire to be ER Managers should understand that you will be implementing whatever business wants you to do, even though it's against your ethics. However, perhaps it's different from a company to a company.

Thanks for watching and for your continued support ♥️♥️. I think it very much depends on your business. In my organisation, HR are very respected and the business will usually listen to our advice. I have however been in other organisations where that's not the case so I'm not surprised by your experiences! Do you work in HR?

@@AdultingbyLola thanks for your comment! I used to work in Finance in one of the Big 4 companies. I went through the whole process trying to sort my problem out informally all the way up to the formal process and eventually ended up at the Employment Tribunal. I have read other Employment Tribunal cases where employees took the Big 4 companies to court and the way they dealt with the complaints are exactly the same. Just wanted to mention the hardest part of the HR job is to implement the business needs even if the decision is against your ethics. Everyone blames the HR even though the decision was made by a partner. This is just my experience from an employee dealing with HR.

@@user-qk9bg2cg2y I'm sorry you had to go through that. Couldn't have been pleasant and yes, I agree. Sometimes HR professionals are asked to compromise their ethics which is really unfair. It happened to be on one organisation so I left.

I feel that people with narcissistic personality disorder best fits in the role of HR they cannot be trusted. There is no nothing humanistic about them. They are there to protect the company, not the employees

Hey Ayan! Small world. I remember you from NHS scheme! And I think its a problem in lots of parts of HR but I have found that HR in the public sector can be a little slower too. Sometimes it can be because of budgets etc. Glad you enjoyed watching. Please do check out episode 2 which focuses on L&D

Hey Lola glad I came across this video. I recently completed an industrial placement working as a recruitment intern I am now going into my final year of university. I heard you talking about CIPD training how do you go about it and what's the best way to achieve/study it because from what I have read you have to fund it yourself? Do you have any advice or tips to go about it? Thank you for an informative video! Can't wait for the next one🤗 Also do you mind if I add you to my connections on LinkedIn?
@AdultingbyLola
@AdultingbyLola 4 года назад
Hey Grace. Of course, I'd love to connect with you on LinkedIn. Drop me a note and if be happy to answer any questions you have. For me, I wouldn't personally fund it myself. I would focus on getting a job in HR and then ask your employer to fund it which wouldn't be unusual at all. I've just uploaded episode 2. Please do check it out and share it with anyone who may find it helpful x
