Most chillers don't turn off. They "unload". Check your low water probe on the next visit. they have a tendency to becoming scaled up and stop sensing water.

Yep! They will "unload" constantly under light load. That is what the bypass is for.

Always remember the basics of refrigeration, break it down and figure out why and what each component is doing. You have the skills to troubleshoot it . Good job for going outside your comfort zone.

Hey, a Technotrans! I am the designated Technotrans repair guy for our company since everyone thinks theyre impossible to work on (theyre not.) The one big issue is the copper is metric sizes which our local supply stores dont carry. 3/8" copper is very close to 10mm which is what they use for liquid lines. I show up and Technotrans has already shipped the parts they think it needs (Solenoid Kits, TXV, Compressor etc.) When we get a call I am just the technician who can safely recover, cut out, braze in, evacuate and charge. Cool to see.

That alarm looks to be a water issue. That brazed plate heat exchanger has an air vent on top. You need water flow like you need air flow, start with the basics and they'll lead you to the problem most of the time. I like a good process chiller.

Chillers are very basic once people see it that way. The problem could be a logic control problem, I’ve had it where the parameters on the controller were not synced with real time parameters, and was off by a good amount. Logic controller had a “freeze logic stat” and put a “low water” alarm out because of the improper parameters

Sounds like evaporator isn’t getting enough water, I would check to see for restrictions. Anything that could disrupt that chilled water supply and return will cause evaporator temp to drop, that’s what’s causing that alarm. Once you confirm everything on that side is good and it’s still being a problem, check the unit with your gauges and dive deeper from there but it should only be a water problem. I love your humility it is very inspiring keep up the good work 👊

One issue I ran into recently on a Daiken chiller was a EXV that would stick closed and cause a low evap pressure fault. I chased water to confirm it was getting enough water and almost everything else before setting on the EXV

I like what you do. I always emphasize to my students that they should never throw away the manuals, before proceeding with a repair or change, they should read the manufacturer's information, it is likely that something about that model and series has changed. We should never believe that we already know enough, every day there is something new to learn. I miss the days of repairing units of those capacities: commercial and industrial. excellent video.

Like any other equipment, they require regular maintenance. Like it was said before, check for scale as it can cause problems on the water side. It looked like your sight glass was clear and uncontaminated so I'd start by checking sensor resistance values and go from there.

You may have already done this but there should be a chilled water strainer in there. More than likely on the entering chilled water side of the heat exchanger. If you valve the water off and take it out you may find it dirty. Might have ink in it i have found that before. Hope you’re able to get it figured out 👍🏼

Those chillers are pretty simple to work on. I have several printing facilities I take care of. If the condenser is inside and the hot gas is cutting on and off it probably low in refrigerant. Is it bubbling in the sight glass? It is just like working on any other chiller.

The manual should mention how to add water/glykol somewhere. I suppose this one has a reservoir on the higher side of the compartment with an access to refill water. It will always happen a little evaporation so may be that simple that it happened over time or even a small leak. The oil based circulators are another story without need for a refill. As you mentioned, those units mostly use a bypass valve and an all time running compressor.

Replace the water with air it will help you remember your basics. Low water=low airflow which could cause low evap temperature etc etc you know the drill
